Rating: Summary: Highly overrated, but stil fairly enjoyable Review: To those who think that "Sliding Doors" is the most original film to come our way in recent years, allow me to disappoint you. The idea of parallel stories has been used before in "Smoking/No Smoking") and (much more brilliantly, by the way) in "The Double Life of Veronique". The problem is that the idea, despite inventive, can be prone to slushy, sugary sentimentalism, and at times this love story in the Twilight Zone *does* get a bit lame, specially because of Lynch and Tripplehorn's sadly underwritten state. What is more, Gwyneth Paltrow (sad as I am to tell it, but she must be one of the most overrated actresses of the decade) has a nice accent, but is ladden with an unfortunately dull-ish character whose amorous mishaps do not exactly get you hooked for the duration. Still, there is much to be liked in this slow-paced comedy, mainly some good dialogue (don't miss out on Lynch's hilarious mate) and a few interesting plot turns.By the way, don't think that just because I am a woman I have to like romantic films. None of my best female friends liked the film all that much. In fact, my mother told me that "Sliding Doors" doesn't hold a candle to "The Rock", "Con Air" or "Enemy of the State", which proves you don't have to be a man to enjoy some action.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Excellent Review: It was a story that could have gotten bogged down and confusing quite easily. It stayed clear and understandable with an enjoyable story. John Hannah was fantastic, first thing I have seen him in!
Rating: Summary: Thought-provoking...to say the least! Review: Sliding Doors provides more than just food for thought: It provides faith in destiny. The story is appealing because it answers questions that everyone at one point or another has asked themselves..."What if I would have turned left at the corner instead of right?...What if only I would have arrived five minutes earlier?". Amazingly well-written and directed. The plot is concise and thoroughly sticks to the story. John Hannah (James), gives an heart-warmng performance. Definite 5 star film! Do yourself a favor and watch it!

Rating: Summary: This movie was a delightful surprise. Review: Normally I am not a Paltrow fan, but agreed to watch the film and was quite pleased that I did.. The story was touching with great sarcastic wit. Paltrow and Hannah were endearing and one could not help but be concerned over the bumbling Lynch character. By far, SLIDING DOORS is one of the best movies I have encountered in a year full of near misses.
Rating: Summary: A clever romantic adult comedy Review: This is a well written script with several funny bits. My wife loved it and gave it five stars. ( I would have given it only four stars.) My only criticism was that the ending struck a discordant note.
Rating: Summary: COULD'VE BEEN BETTER W/O BAD LANGUAGE Review: I thought the movie was brilliantly written. Although I can't seem to understand why writers seem to think that putting in bad language makes a movie better. There are so many movies that were kept clean and they got great reviews. I thought Paltrow was wonderful in this movie it took such a neat and enlightening turn. I would watch it again.
Rating: Summary: You know what they say on Monty Python..... Review: I just rented Sliding Doors lastnight and I have to say that it was such a great Film, the acting was terrific from all. I wont spoil it but the ending is very clever. The locations for the film are great, really capturing the beauty of London. You HAVE to watch this movie!
Rating: Summary: A deeply satisfying movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow Review: First-time Brit director/writer Peter Howitt has given us an intriguing romantic comedy in Sliding Doors, a movie that explores the fascinating concept of fate, and how trivial matters in our daily encountering could have far more profound consequences in our lives than we realize. The movie's humor and wit reminded me most of Four Weddings and a Funeral, my favorite romantic comedy of all-time. Incidentially, John Hannah, who also appeared in Four Weddings, plays the love interest of Gwyneth Paltrow. They have a wonderful screen presence together, with a solid supporting cast to boost. The script is effective in juggling the two paths of Helen's life, keeping me caring and guessing till the very end. As with most of Paramount releases, the DVD is sorely lacking in feature. Given that there is no extra, I would prefer that the disc would automatically play when inserted. The default soundtrack of the movie is Pro-Logic, so if you have a Dolby Digital setup, you would need to make that selection on the menu each time. The soundtrack options could not be selected during the movie. With that aside, I am quite pleased with the transfer. The picture is perfectly matted at approximately 1.85:1. 16x9 enhancement is not available to widescreen set owners, and while I detest pan and scan format, the movie would be suitable for those that prefer the format and should be made available on the unused side. Images are generally sharp, but prone to graininess at times, mostly on static backgrounds. Also exhibiting are minor jaggedness on edges and dirt particles on the print. Colors, however, are striking, with memorable scenes of neon displays inside the small diner and the picturesque Hammersmith Bridge at night against the twinkling skyline backdrop. Fleshtones are natural throughout. The Dolby Digital soundtrack has a good use for the front channels, but little else for the surrounds. Occassionally, there are realistic effects of pouring rain and crowd noise, which are the extended mix for the surrounds. The movie does have a delightful collection of songs from British bands that lend nicely to the setting. As for the dialogue, I believe that I read once somewhere that the movie was dubbed on some prints with a friendlier accent for the American audiences. Thankfully, this is not the dubbed version, but for the untrained ears, the British accent could be difficult to understand, with Paltrow sporting a perfect native accent. In which case, you can always turn on the subtitles. Sliding Doors is a deeply satisfying movie that kept me laughing and pondering at the same time. Despite the lack of feature, this DVD is highly recommended.
