Summary: Amazing
Review: This movie is simply amazing. These characters are fantastically portrayed by the actors - this was such an underrated film! I am not just saying this because I love Giovanni Ribisi so much (though I must say, he is fantastic). This movie had me rolling on the floor laughing, and at other times sobbing like a baby. It never fails; every time I watch it this happens! It shows that even the "simpelest" of people can fall into complicated love relationships, but sometimes it's so easy to express...
"I love you more than band music and cookie making." ;-)

Summary: The Best Movie Ever!!!
Review: I think it's really incredible and really great to show viewers out there that people with disabilities are just like everyone else. They experience the same things in life like everyone else and they have dreams, hopes, wishes and feelings like everyone else. I have Down Syndrome, I have a boyfriend, I'm learning to live on my own and my boyfriend and I are seriously considering marriage. This movie says everything, it definately speaks to you. That's why this movie is the best, THE BEST, I've ever seen in my life!

Summary: I question the movie's accuracy....
Review: This was a good movie but there were some things that didn't seem right-- why would Carla have never been to a dance or had a boyfriend if she'd been "a very popular girl." as her school principal said to her dad? I know people who went to a school similar to Carla's and they had dances and some of them had boyfriends and girlfriends-- I would think any school with teenagers in it, period, would have these things to some degree!

Summary: The Other Sister---a car heading for a wall
Review: It seems to me that the reason this movie was made was because Juliette Lewis saw all the adulation Leo got for his performance in Who Ate Gilbert's Grape? and she thought to herself "Hey, I could do that." At times I thought she did a decent job, but then, all of a sudden, her real voice would come back, and it was obvious she had slipped out of character. This is too bad. I've loved other characters she's played in the past. And I'm sick of dumb musical interludes whenever something "dramatic" happens. And how many movies do we have to watch where someone crashes a wedding? And how many scenes where some disillusioned lover is riding on a train away from his loved one? There was one part that reminded me of Steve Martin from The Jerk. Carla (Lewis) tells her mother that she is going to plan her own wedding because she hated the wedding her mother gave for her sister. She goes on and on about how she hated the centerpiece, the shoes, the hats, she hated this, she hated that. "Except for this dress. I'm gonna keep it." Another thing, when you have an actress like Diane Keaton playing the distraught mother of a mentally-challenged individual, you know it's going to be too much to take. All I can say is, thank goodness it wasn't Meryl Streep.

Summary: offensive and melodramatic claptrap that insults the issues
Review: I originally saw this move when it came out in 1999. I recently saw it again on video, and, if anything, my opinion of this dreadful film is even worse than my earlier impression. This is, in my opinion, one of the most stereotypical and offensive portrayls of developmentally delayed individuals that I have ever seen! Do yourself a favor, avoid this film like the plague!!The plot (and I use the term lightly) centers on the life and loves by a young "retarded" girl who returns home after having been sent to a 'special school' by her guilt ridden, extremely wealthy parents for several years. In the course of 128 tedious minutes, this girl goes through a number of "challenges", all of which are presented in the most maudlin and melodramatic manner possible.
The faults of this piece of schlock from Gary Marshall are too numerous to mention, so I'll focus only on those elements, which were most offensive. These include: 1. Fatuous acting by the 2 'retarded' characters, both of whom obviously spent a few days with intellectually challenged individuals, but learned nothing other than the most overt mannerisms. These they portray in a way that would embarrass a first year drama student.
2. Playing disabilities and intellectual impairments for laughs. Virtually every five to ten minutes there would be an episode where one or other of the 'retarded' characters would engage in some socially unacceptable or embarrassing behavior, invariably presented as funny. At the screening I viewed in the theatre, there were several young women behind me who erupted in gales of laughter each time one of those crazy 'retards' did another 'cute' thing.
3. Diane Kenton, whose over the top, hysterical acting as the guilty mother makes us yearn for the subdued and deep performances seen in Something About Mary.
4. A total ignoring of the real issues faced by the intellectually challenged. These 'retards' are rich, physically attractive, with totally supportive families and oodles of friends. No loneliness, rejection, physical disabilities, or poverty to interfere with the fun.
5. Lastly, and most damning, is the fact that there was a potential for a real movie that could examine the issues and lives of the intellectually challenged. Any random sample of such people would reveal incredible stories of courage and heartbreak, which are rarely, if ever, heard. As someone who has worked extensively with the intellectually impaired, I am offended that such a piece of utter drivel could command the effort and money needed to bring it to the screen. If you want to find out about the intellectually challenged, do yourself a favor, and volunteer with the local agencies that work with this population. You'll learn more in five minutes than you will from 2 hours of this drek!

Summary: i'm embarassed
Review: this is in the top ten worst movies ever made. the entire film seemed as if it was a parody, and was so badly acted it felt almost offensive at times. the script only added to the embarassment. normally respectable actors gave the worst performances of their lives. if only juliet lewis had been able to imitate leonardo dicaprio's dead-on portrayal of a mentally handicaped boy in 'what's eating gilbert grape'. whew, this movie was a long sit.

Summary: endearing comedy
Review: In THE OTHER SISTER, director Garry Marshall took on touchy subject matter. In less-than-capable hands, this story would have enraged and infuriated disabled communities and charities (just think of the dreadful recent BUBBLE BOY debacle). Happily, such is not the case with THE OTHER SISTER. This charming romantic comedy treats its subject matter with dignity and respect. Lead actors Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi give low-key performances as two disabled youths who decide to get married. Carla (Lewis) has just returned home after spending many years in an institution. Her frantic mother (Diane Keaton) and her loving, supportive father (Tom Skerritt) decide to help her live out her dream of independance, which involves studying at the local Polytech and getting her own apartment. When Carla meets Daniel (Giovanni Ribisi) who is also disabled and studying at the Polytech; the two decide to become friends but soon end up as boyfriend and girlfriend. Juliette Lewis (NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION, MIXED NUTS) is luminous as Carla, while Giovanni Ribisi (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, TV's "Friends") is endearing as the nervous Daniel. Highly recommended.

Review: GOOD! THIS MOVIE WAS GOOD! I'M MAD THAT THIS MOVIE WASN'T POPULAR. IT SHOULD BE BECAUSE IT'S GOOD. I LIKED "SPECIAL PEOPLE" MORE BUT THIS MOVIE WAS GOOD. THE ACTORS ARE NOT REAL MENTALLY CHALLENGED PEOPLE BUT THEY DO A GOOD JOB PRETENDING. MY MOM SAYS THEY ARE NOT PRETENDING AND THAT THEY ARE REALLY MENTALLY CHALLENGED BUT I DON'T BELIEVE HER. SHE IS WRONG! THIS MOVIE IS GOOD IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE MENTALLY CHALLENGED EVERYDAY. THE LOVE STORY IS GOOD TOO. WATCH IT AND YOU'LL THINK IT'S GOOD.

Summary: Puh-lease.
Review: Movies about people with real challenges should not be this dumb. Halfway through watching the cut-rate acting, I turned it off any watched "GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords" instead. THAT movie turned out to be pretty cool. I always liked the GoBots more than Transformers, because Leader-One (both sizes) could beat the diodes out of Optimus Prime. So, instead of watching a movie with the boyfriend from "My Two Dads" pretending to have Down's Syndrome, you should try to find a copy of a GoBots adventure. It's less insulting.

You just wanna grab him and give him a kiss!! He'll make you crack up, but even though your cracking up your sad because you just want so many good things for him!! And then he'll make you cry because he's just so sweet! But then he'll make you just swoon because HE'S SO SEXY!!! GIOVANNI RIBISI - THE BEST ACTOR IN THE WHOLE WORLD!! AND THIS MOVIE IS JUST SO AWESOME - LIKE ANY MOVIE WITH HIM IN IT IS!! HE'S SO TALENTED!! OTHER GREAT MOVIES WITH VONNI IN IT - The Gift, Suburbia, First Love Last rites, Mod Squad, Boiler Room, and a whole lot more!!!
