Review: I made the mistake of renting this movie on Valentines'Day. Luckily I watched it alone. I had no idea it was such a depressing movie. The back of the video said nothing. That aside, I did watch it to the end because it is a well acted movie and you do want to know what happens. This movie really makes you appreciate your life, especially if you are a woman. But make sure you have time to think and be depressed after watching it.

Review: A movie like this is difficult to recommend because it is a systematic examination of the unbelievable pain life can bring to some human beings. Kate Winslet gives a stunning performance that bodes well for future projects where she is given a decent script. While the theme here is different than "Angela's Ashes", the end result is the same: an almost overbearing sadness. Having said that, the scenery while stark still has a beauty unto itself. This film is definitely not for the weak of heart, but for those who like their cinematic experience with a heavy dose of reality, this is the ticket.

Summary: Life doesn't always have a happy ending.
Review: I fell in love with this film. Wonderfully acted to the last bitter moment. Jude is a melancholy movie and there is no relief at conclusion, because the focus is grief not redemption. The film dared to portray how horribly tragic the outcome of classism can be. The title character longed for something more, better than his daily existence and was denied that opportunity solely on the basis of class. The university town is cold, perfectly gray (nothing thrives or grows there), narrow streets (akin to the narrow minded people), and gives the impression of intense limit (knowing one's place). This film is not for everyone. If you cling to happy endings then pass this one by, but if you're looking for depth and intense passion (albeit painful most times), and loss of joy never to be regained... this is the film for you.

Review: Slow moving, very depressing account of a young man's subconscious drive toward achieving unhappiness - every decision he makes is another step towards that goal. The sex scenes are totally gratuitous.

Summary: Kate,Kate, Kate!
Review: Kate Winslet is ABSOULUTELY AWESOME in this movie. I saw it because I am a huge Kate Winslet fan, and this movie is abfab! Chris also does a wonderful job as Jude, but Kate is the real star. She pulls you into her role, makes you cry when she crys. This movie is just as sad as TITANIC, which I found out about Kate. The cinematography and screenplay are awesome, and I loved the black and white beginning. If you haven't seen this movie, put it on your must see list now, and all of Kate's other movies (I've seen and have them all).

Summary: Jude and Sue were one person that life tore apart.
Review: I have seen JUDE many times,and each feels like the first.Iam struck by the yearning Jude has to succeed and his determination to learn. You can see his dream of University in his eyes as a child when Mr.P tells him of Christminster. Once a man,he temporarily throws his dream away for a woman but he comes alive again when he finds his soulmate in Sue. In the scene at the bridge when they share a line from Catullus, and they stare at each other, you sense that they are looking into each other's soul.It is more intense then if they had kissed at that moment. As they drift apart it is even more clear of their need for each other. The deaths of their children are heart wrenching to say the least.Kate Winslet delivered the most gripping scene of utter torment that I have ever witnessed. She became my favorite actress at that point because I knew it was torn from something within that was very private to her and yet she shared that with her audience. Chris was excellent as Jude as well and together they must have brought the characters to life as Thomas Hardy would have envisioned them. Mr. Hardy never wrote another novel after JUDE and I don't think I'll ever be affected by another movie myself. Midge
