Rating: Summary: Just Watch It and Wish American Films Could Be This Real Review: There's an interesting article in the December issue of the British film magazine Sight and Sound where Brian de Palma, Paul Verhoven and William Friedken are interviewed and they lament the fact that Hollywood (and the indie scene) are afraid to tackle serious adult dramas that frankly deal with sex, sex that isn't just humping and grunting - but wildly enthusiastic sex, sexy games and sexual awakenings. This Spanish film deals with all these human of all topics in a fascinating way. Oddly, when this film did come to the US it was edited -- take some of that sex out; even though it's in the title. Paz Vega is the next Spanish Starlet waiting to break into the International Cinema scene. All she needs to do make sure she takes the right film choices, and doesn't date some flavor of the month white dude (i.e. Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz). Her performance as Lucia in this film is startling, surely an Oscar worthy performance that outshines Nicole Kidman's Oscar-winning work, and any other female star in the past 5 or 6 years. The film is beautifully shot and the locations are marvelous.
Rating: Summary: hot, but poorly developed narrative Review: this movie has a hot leading actress and the acting is pretty decent...but the director clearly loves the "blue filter" which was profoundly overused to provide some edgy, art house legitimacy to the film...and the narrative just falls apart. It was annoying...and I bought the dvd...please e-mail me if you want to take it off my hands.
Rating: Summary: watching this for your first time, should be alone... Review: suspense and wonderment...the thing about this film is that you have to pay attention and have an open mind. if a predictable film is what you want this is not at all for you. the way the story of the island is told makes you want to follow the rabbit just like alice did in that childhood fantasy years ago... and start from the middle again.... this film has absolutely nothing to do with alice, just a metaphoric babble moment... sensuality, memory, love, dreams, photography, art, romance, intercorse, penitration{in more ways than any other film i've ever seen on the shelves of blockbuster before} ,twists and turns, i could not even get up to pee, this is a fantastic film. the soundtrack is awesome as well. the actors played their characters so well that it could have been a silent film...you get the message...this has to b e one of the most beautiful foreign films that i have watched in a very long time...eyecandy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: A mind in emotional turmoil... Review: Lucia is a waitress in Madrid, Spain, when something tragic happens to her boyfriend, Lorenzo, who is a writer. This tragic event seems to be related to an island where something happened some time ago, and Lucia packs her bags and intends to visit the island. At the island, she begins her soul-searching and determines how her relationship with Lorenzo came about. In this manner, she noticed that she got lost into a dark emotional roller coaster that seemed to influence Lorenzo's writing and their relationship. As she discovers herself, she also finds out about the islands hollow structure, which serves as a symbolism for her former relationship with Lorenzo. Sex and Lucia is obviously a well designed and written story that is brought to life through some very intimate moments. These moments might offend some viewers, however, these shots make the film very personal to the audience. Overall, the story is chopped up to resemble a mind in emotional turmoil which enhances the feelings that the film creates. This film will surely offend many, however, the film also offers a truly great cinematic experience.
Rating: Summary: A very original, moving story. Review: The first time I saw this movie I had rented it from the video store. After watching it I knew I had to own it, then I found it on Amazon and saw an unrated version; great!
Medem's movies are almost ethereal, yet very down to earth in the portrayal of the characters and their emotions and actions. If you like your movies with depth and sex, this is it. As for the DVD itself, I was impressed with the special features and the menus options, for a foriegn DVD.
The only problem I had was that the DVD was loose in the package and was scratched a bit.
I only wish that Amazon would carry Medem's other movie, "Lover's of the Arctic Circle".
Rating: Summary: Provacative And Daring Review: "Sex And Lucia" is the perfect movie for those looking for something daring and sexual. However, this movie is more than sexually provacative imagery, this has a highly complex plot. It combines drama, romance, and erotica. Numerous storylines combine as one movie to keep the audience guessing. Its depth offers great heart and soul. "Sex And Lucia" is highly daring and earns the producers tremendous respect for doing what few others have done. Such emotional value allows the actors to express their characters with heavier heart and soul. They perform brilliantly. The chemistry is present between the characters in every love scene. "Sex And Lucia" is a great spanish import. This will keep many entertained for a long time. Those interested in this movie should watch the unrated version, not the R-rated. The R-rated version takes away much of the emotional aspect and the erotic effects, which is not what the producers intended. Those looking for further provocative and daring experience should also watch "Y Tu Mama Tambien", the unrated version. The two movies combined should spice up a night.
Rating: Summary: how do you say "blah blah blah" in Spanish? Review: Lucia has read and re-read a writer's work so often and so passionately that she grows to love him. She follows him and ultimately confronts him with her devotion and asks if he will live with her. He reacts positively to the suggestion and things go swimmingly until the writer is confronted with his past and struggles with a transformative writing experience. Several odd peripheral characters appear and interact with implicit or explicit passion etc etc There are some foreign films that gain a US audience because they are heavy on the romance (wink-wink nudge-nudge), and this is one of them. If you want to see attractive foreigners get playful, then this film will meet your expectations. Don't, however, let its being subtitled convince you that this incomprehensible blur of writer's-imagination-cum-time-travel melange is deep. It's just pretty people being fleshy. Not that there's anything wrong with that -- but Kurosawa it ain't. DVD extras include short statements by nine cast & crew members, a 25-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, stills, biographies, soundtrack information and trailers. The film is in Spanish with English or French subtitles available.
Rating: Summary: I liked it. Review: This is a good movie. There is more male nudity than female nudity here. good cinematography, good character development, (which is a bit chaotic via psych perspective but nicely interconnected) and good plot. ...
Rating: Summary: No Ending, Passion, Desire, Tangles Lives Review: Well, I have read other reviews. I am sure they miss the point. The central theme of this work is simple; desire. Its art blooms in its portayal of each individual's struggles and enjoyment of desire: 'Desire' being that which we live for and by. Each quirk in the plot, when X character is revealed to have two degrees of seperation from Y character, adds to the revelation that desire fuels us all and connects us all. Desire for sex and/or procreation is perhaps the most basic of those presented and considered. Then desire for trust, continuity, acceptance, warmth, and truth follow; arguably all the most basic but, yet, all intertwined, helping to define eachother; as each character does. Sex has to be explored here. Sex is explored here. Many other essentials of living experience are played with here; all with extreme amounts of subtlety. A beautifully shot film with plenty of empty spaces in which the imagination can wander, this will be enjoyed by those with patience and at least one romantic bone in their body. What a dreamy and heavy treatment life's daily confusion; summed as a honest treatment of the open spaces which we try to feel our way through.
Rating: Summary: Out there. Review: This movie is really really out there. It it very abstract and one will find it hard making sense of certain scenes. Some of the sex scenes are alright, but the movie indulges too much in them. No that good though.
