Summary: It is the music which carries the spirit of the story
Review: I rented the movie and watched it many times. Then, I ended up buying the movie sound-track.

I definitely agree with those reviewers who thought Franco Zeffirelli had picked badly to cast Wiiliam Hurt as Rochester. Hurt did not possess the dynamic charm of Rochester. He was too excessive in terms of Rochester's melancholic nature and lack of the explosive desire that Rochester sometimes exercised in the book. I do not see how Hurt's Rochester could be madly in love with Jane. However, for the rest of the cast, they did an excellent job and the Thornfield Hall situated in the movie had the atmosphere of the book.

My gratitude in this review is actually addressed to Alessio Vlad & Claudio Capponi, who are the composers of this movie sound-track. Their music has given me the spirit of Jane Eyre. The composition of this sound-track matches perfectly to the important plots of the book. With some imagination and the help of this beautiful music, I have my own Mr. Rochester and Jane Eyre in my mind for a moment. That is enough.

Summary: The Best Movie Version of Jane Eyre.
Review: I disagree with many of the people who did not like this movie. I think that it is the best movie version I have seen yet. William Hurt makes an excellent Rochester and Charlotte Gainsbourg as Jane is exactly as I always pictured her. The scenery and the costumes are also very beautiful. I have also seen the Timothy Dalton version (as many people mentioned) and though it is good, I dont think it quite compares to this one. The chemistry between Gainsbourg's Jane and Hurt's Rochester is tangible. Anna Paquin as young Jane was the perfect choice, now there is a talented young actress (see "The Piano" she won an oscar for her role in that) The one thing I do agree upon however, is that Elle McPherson as Blanche Ingram was a poor choice indeed. She looked like a sickly wax doll and her blonde hair looked fake! fake! fake! But that was just about the only thing I did not like about this movie. See it, you wont be disappointed.

Summary: Beautiful story
Review: While the young actors in this version leave much to be desired, the adult actors are incredible. I have read the book, and seen several versions, and this is the best so far. The passion between this couple is extraordinary. This may not follow the book exactly, but the love story is so beautifully told that the plot is almost secondary. Its a wonderful film.

Summary: This is a shockingly beautiful movie.
Review: I thought that William Hurt's performance in the movie was the best I had ever seen. He was spectacular. When I saw a part of this movie on tv, I immiedialy ran out to buy it. I had missed some of it, but it was coming on again in a couple of days. I just couldn't wait. I went right out and bought it. There were several Jane Eyre viedos on the shelf but this is the one I had to have. And it was all because of William Hurts mesmerizing performance. He is the best. I still watch this video several times a week. It is truly one of my all time favorites.

Summary: The Best Movie I've Ever Seen
Review: I loved this video. I can't seem to get it out of my mind. William Hurt should have received an award for this film. I think it is the best movie I have seen in a long time. Buy it you'll love it too.

Summary: Very disappointing
Review: It's sad to see a great director miss his mark so badly but this version of Jane Eyre is all visual beauty without any of Bronte's deeply vivid emotionalism or intelligence. Charlotte Gainsburg might have been perfect casting; she looks quite right... but what happened to the chemistry that should have been almost suffocatingly pulling her to Rochester? There's absolutely no magic or high-sizzle tension between this Rochester and Jane... and no Jane Eyre can survive without that. William Hurt is a very poor casting choice for Rochester; he's good at intelligent, cool, ambiguous roles; but he can't be wildly Victorian-gothic at all. Rochester here seems to have no desperate need for his Jane; he sleepwalks through his lines. With all the money that was obviously spent on enchanting views and opulent costumes, it's a shame that no one looked hard at the flat screenplay and passive, uninvolved acting (Paquin as young Jane is an exception). This movie makes me think Zeffirelli got too old to remember what passion feels like. His young Romeo & Juliet of the '60s were so very emotionally involved with each other; what happened to Rochester and Jane, who should have been just as caught up in their emotional destiny? I'm very sorry this pretty-but-flat piece missed Bronte's whole point. Please consider watching the Timothy Dalton/Zelah Clarke version to get a real feel for the intensity of the story and for the characters. This Zeffirelli version is just stale Hollywood champagne.

Summary: Loved It
Review: This movie was really good! Jane was just how I thought she would look like! I wish there was a little more romance at the end, the end seemed a little different than my favorite book, but it helped me understand it more. I was impressed!

Summary: Hauntingly Beautiful.
Review: Since watching this movie on television, I've been haunted by the beauty of both the love story and the beautiful scenery. I've seen other versions, but nothing prepared me for the impact this movie would have on my soul. I've not read the book but plan to after viewing this video I'm ordering again and again.

Summary: Bleeech
Review: Jane Eyre is my all time favorite book, and this movie destroys the story. William Hurt is a horrible Rochester, having absolutely none of Rochester's dark and brooding manner, and course, none of his dark good looks. Charlotte Gainesburg was fair as Jane, she looked just how I picture her, and did alright as acting, but I still dislike this movie. ElleMacpherson was horrible as Blanche Ingram, looking absolutely nothing like the book described. Anna Paquin did well as the young Jane, and her acting was all there is to admire about this movie. The story was screwed up, leaving out important parts, and taking liberties with those that were not. In short, this movie is disgusting, Charlotte Bronte would be appalled. If you want to see a Jane Eyre movie, rent the Timothy Dalton version, that is far better, for it follows the story more closely, and the acting wasn't so horrible. I hate it when movie producers screw everything up!!!
