Summary: Seen 'em all, this is the worst!
Review: Because I have been so impressed with A&E in the past, this film was bitterly disappointing. I suppose it would be fine if you haven't read the book or seen any of the other versions, but in my case, I have read the book (and I earnestly believe it is the best piece of literature ever written!) and seen all the other versions and this was miles below them all! I thought that they couldn't get much worse than the Hurt/Gainsbourg version but I was wrong! Mostly what was lacking in this film was the chemistry between the two main characters. Hinds played a repulsive, harsh, blundering fool and Morton put no emotion or passion into her pitifully stale Jane. However, I think that with a better script and more time to develop their characters, they could have done a much more impressive job. If you want to see a truly out-of-this-world,more-than-ever-hoped-for version, then see the Dalton/Clarke one. It's true to the book and the acting is incredible! Now that is a great film!

Summary: So-so,depending on one's previous experience with Jane Eyre.
Review: For those who have not viewed any other movie versions of this wonderful book, this movie would suffice--unless, of course they have read the book. In that case, one would find this movie quite lacking in comparison. For those who HAVE viewed one or another of the other movies, particularly the Timothy Dalton version, this movie would be like eating peanut butter rather than accepting prime rib!

Summary: Magnificent!! This movie is a must-see.
Review: The powerful and riveting performances delivered by the two leading actors in this version of "Jane Eyre" serve to create a truly magical experience for the viewer. The love story is both romantic and thought-provoking and can restore romantic hopefulness in even the most lovelorn of persons. A definite must-see.

Summary: Any classic lovers' delight!
Review: I've seen this film about three times, and I loved it more and more every time. This is a film version of the classic love story. Jane Eyre is a misstreated orphan living in 19th century England. When Jane is about 18, she takes a job at the home of a rich man with a shadowed past, and a shocking surprise for Jane in his attic! Samantha Morton's soft strong voice realy brings to life the blunt, strong willed opinions of the infamous Jane Eyre so well!

Summary: All Sturm und Drang......no substance
Review: Where do I begin?

I was extremely disappointed in this version of "Jane Eyre" given A&E's usual sterling track record. In this instance, they missed the boat. Heck, they missed the entire harbor!

Ciaran Hinds is a bellowing, buffoonish Rochester who inspires no sympathy or affection. Why WOULD Jane care for this overbearing, oversexed lout? All the subtle but passionate longing that Rochester evinces for Jane (in the novel) is reduced to eye-rolling, sweat-beaded-brow lust. Hinds grabs one side of the admittedly luscious (and well photographed) scenery and chews his way through to the other side; unfortunately, he leaves the true essence of Rochester behind him in his journey.

Samantha Morton is well cast as to age....and that's the best I can say about her. Her Jane is surprisingly co-dependent, and when she isn't whining for attention, she's being inappropriately enigmatic. I never could figure out what the Mona Lisa smile (flashed at the most inopportune times) was supposed to signify. Amusement? Bewilderment? Nervousness?

The supporting cast was excellent, and the aformentioned scenery/setting was superb, but the crux of the story rests with Jane and Rochester. If they fail to convince the viewer, the film fails, and in this case, it failed abysmally.

Summary: Best ever Jane Eyre adaptation; magnificent casting!
Review: After reading the book and watching several adaptations, I found this version to be far superior to the others. Samantha Morton and Ciaran Hinds are absolutely perfect. I find myself compelled to watch it over and over! The only objection I have is the length--it is a shame it couldn't have been a 4 hour miniseries and included more details from the novel, especially interaction between Jane and Mr. Rochester. I was happy to find out the actual video did have added footage from the A&E TV version, but still not enough. Hats off to the two lead actors for superb performances! I look forward to seeing them in future productions.

Summary: Great story and excellent acting
Review: I found this video to be excellent. Samantha Morton did a wonderful job playing Jane Eyre. The story was fast paced and unanticipated. Recommend highly for those who are romantic.

Summary: great movie! too short though.
Review: Since I have never read the book, I can only comment on what I know of the film - which is what I'm expected to do,I suppose. The first few minutes of the film went by so quickly and seemed to contain so much that I can only guess that there was more to the story than what was portrayed on the screen. I guess the director wanted to concentrate on Jane's experiences as a woman than as a child. Mr. Rochester was unattractive and rude at the beginning but he grew on me as the film went on and actually melted my heart near the end when he cried. In my opinion, these two actors did an excellent job in making you feel the suspense of their feelings for each other. At the end I was wishing the film would continue on. This version should have been stretched out to 3 or 4 hours so all the details which seem to be missing could be shown. That was the most disappointing part of it. The music was wonderful and acting superb. I would recommend seeing it.

Summary: Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is Great Entertainment!
Review: Samathan Morton and Ciaran Hinds play their parts in this movie wonderfully! Passion bursts forth with humor and gothic excitement as the great classic Jane Eyre comes to the screen. The only negative comment I would have is they change A LOT when she leaves Thornfield. But the flow is great, and the priority (being Mr. Rochester) is kept the priority. There's something about it that makes you want to watch it over and over again! I would recommend this film to anyone who loves the actors and/or the story!

Summary: Eloquent blending of suspense and romance.
Review: Ciaran Hinds is Mr. Rochester! Until this movie, I thought only George C. Scott could play the part. Mr. Hinds's brusque characterization is softened by Miss Morton's subtleness. Both actors are fascinating to watch. I definitely will look forward to seeing much more of these two in the future. Even the little girl was a delight as she enunciated her French dialogue. And, Pilot. Yes, I would send a letter to him, too! Beautifully photographed, great costumes, sets, and haunting music, make you believe that you are in the 1840's.
