Summary: Amelie: Remember when films were produced by artists?
Review: My wife and I saw Amelie last night and it made me remember that there was a time when films were produced and directed by artists. When the movie ended the audience remained silent while a long list of credits scrolled down the screen. Even the credits were done with humor and taste. When the credits were about to end the audience broke into spontaneous applause. Its been a long time since I have experienced this kind of response to a movie. The response was well deserved.

Amelie is a tribute to the human imagination and excellent acting. It is as far away from the formula films of recent vintage, that are the creation of corporate marketing, as one can get. The plot has unexpected twists and turns that had the audience laughing aloud when it wasn't wondering what new aspect of Amelie's personality they were about to discover. The cast was also superb. The best way to describe the acting is to imagine that each of the roles required an excellent character actor and that everyone delivered. Audrey Tautou was outstanding in the title role. She was in almost every scene but she hardly spoke. She didn't need to. Her actions and facial expressions said everything.

Paris also contributed to the success of the movie. It isn't the Paris that tourists come to see, however. It is the Paris that nourishes and supports the lovable screwballs that we come to know as they go about their routine lives which would seem eccentric and implausible almost any place else.

Summary: THIS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME
Review: This is such a great wonderful lovely movie. A minute into the movie i was already laughing and did laugh all the way through.
At the same time thats it is making you laugh its so sweet and raw because it shows people, like Amelie, need to focus on fixing themselves and making sure they are happy. Love this movie

Summary: Disappointing
Review: The only reason I saw this movie was for extra credit in my French class. The plot is interesting (and weird) but was very poorly executed. The acting is very bad, because it is poorly written. I would advise against seeing this movie; in theaters or when it comes out on video. It is a waste of time. Definitely overrated.

Lovely.

Summary: Highly recommended
Review: In "Amelie" we are treated to the best that the overseas film industry has to offer - an eclectic, fun, well developed film. The title character is a shy eccentric young woman who decides to improve the lives of her Parisian acquaintances with a series of anonymous good deeds. However, as in any good story, there is a deeper motive for her actions - she is tentatively expanding her own sense of self and discovering who she really is. The writing is witty and the film was very well made. Several scenes had us laughing out loud and others had me wanting to hug the well-played characters during their vunerable moments.

If you do like this movie, I would also recommend "City of Lost Children" by the same director.

Summary: Best movie ever!
Review: I found the entire movie captivating. I thought Jeunet's cinematography enthralling, and I don't think it could have gotten any better. The coincidences are really interesting, and this movie seems to blend mainstream plot characteristics with surreal aspects as well, preventing the movie from becoming cheesy. I am glad a less famous actor, (Audrey Tautou) starred in Amelie, a Hollywood production would make it boring and hackneyed. I think this movie could only be made in France, the street scenes of Paris are very accurate and create a beautiful and magical setting for this film.

Summary: I have yet to meet a person who didn't like this movie
Review: Even my brother, who is all into action. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It makes you feel silly without feeling guilty. It makes you care about the characters (something I haven't been able to do since the great movie year of '99). After it was over, I realized I had been smiling the whole time! My face hurt I was smiling so much. It was directed, acted, and written so well that I want to go out and try to make it in the movie business myself.

Summary: Amelie --- a genius of the heart.
Review: The direction reminded me strongly of The Royal Tennenbaums, but this movie was much more fun, and far more heart-felt. This is the reason we go to movies... to be surprised and uplifted.

Summary: A Bright Example of Film Making for 2001
Review: If you enjoy uplifting Euro-Art films with a bit of a twist, this film is for you. Simply a luminescent film. The director has made other equally engaging films albeit much darker, eg. "City of Lost Children" and "Delicatessen", but "Amelie" was just the right cure for the somber mood which covered America this fall. The actress Audrey Tautou in the title role, is a wonderful fit for the character she plays. She exudes just the right amount of "Bohemian-Crunch" and "Franco-Beauty" charm. Shot with moments of animation, this film is one of my top 10 for 2001. I am going to certainly own it once out on DVD. "Amelie" is one of the reasons I go to see artsy-fartsy Euro-films. See it before it goes away!
