Review: If you like shallow, physically unattractive people and the

Summary: Not fully realized, but a decent film all the same
Review: My initial thought at this DVD was "Why do many filmmakers of [homosexual]movies feel so compelled to put shirtless guys on the movie jacket?" It's almost insulting. But they have to let you know that it's A [homosexual]Movie, I guess. In any event, on to the content... The concept of exploring different possibilities as related to the outcome of an event or decision is not new, but is seldom explored in cinema, probably for the reason that it's somewhat hard to follow. If you've ever seen the movie "Go" -- which is essentially the same story told three times from three different perspectives -- then you know what I mean. It's ingenious in a way, but you have to make yourself think outside of what the formulaic movie flow has become -- not altogether a bad thing. The event here is Ryan's three-year relationship with Joel coming to an end because although Ryan loves Joel, he doesn't feel that Joel understands him or fully connects with him. This of course happens around the same time he by chance meets young Leo, an aspiring writer who connects with Ryan on so many obscure levels, it's almost creepy (including their shared "romantic" fascination with serial rapists/killers). From that encounter, the movie tells three stories depending on the various possibilities -- Ryan leaves Joel, falls in love with Leo (it's mutual) and forms a new relationship; or Ryan and Leo just have an affair which only affirms Ryan's true love for Joel and they get back together; or Ryan leaves Joel to pursue Leo, who rejects him out of hand on HIS mission to pursue Joel, who subsequently rejects HIM. With me so far? This is why this stuff is challenging to present in film! There's also a somewhat irrelevant tangent that brings a published writer named Dane into the mix. He's a friend of Joel's from high school, and in L.A. on a book tour. In one version, he sleeps with Joel; in another, he sleeps with Ryan, and it really adds little to the journey of the main characters. It's a good movie, and frankly, the performances are very, VERY realistic and well-conceived. I didn't feel like the lines were scripted at all, and the relationships Ryan had with his two good friends (both straight) were superlative. In the end, though, I felt cheated and dissatisfied... not because the movie didn't spell out the ending (rather it just explored possibilities), but it almost seemed like Quentin Lee got bored with writing the story, or wrote himself into a corner, then spent ten minutes hastily churning out a very contrived, very bland ending that really flew in the face of the preceding 80 minutes of storytelling. This is not a movie to be avoided, by any means -- it was smart and enjoyable. I just wanted a little more than it had to offer, which was almost the cliché, "... and after that summer, I was never the same again" ending that Christina Ricci's characted DeeDee railed about in "The Opposite of Sex".

Summary: worthwhile yet flawed
Review: Quentin Lee seems to be a jack of all trades. He not only directs this film, he wrote and shot it as well. That's three jobs too many. He is without a doubt an excellent director, but he should leave the writing to someone else. His dialogue is stiff and intellectual and doesn't always ring true. Thank God for the wonderful actors that he's found here that truly make the characters their own and create a very believable little world. They make the impossible possible and do it with great style and grace. Lee definitely has a career ahead of him as he has wonderful instincts and has an important point of view, but next time, leave the writing to someone else.

Summary: Excellent Storytelling
Review: Though I'm over 50 years in age, I found this film extremely easy to relate to. Relationship issues have always been a confusion for me, and it appears that they're the same now as when I was in my early 20's. I found this extremely comforting as I watched the characters of Ryan, Joel, and Leo going through their strangely familiar 3-way dance. Thank you for a job well done.

Summary: strong reactions
Review: It certainly seems that this movie evokes some very strong reactions out of people. I've read the good and the bad comments on Amazon, and truly thought I was going to hate this movie. After seeing it though, it seems to me that most of the people who have negative comments just didn't get it. I found it to be totally unique and, most importantly, totally honest. Any film that evokes such strong emotions out of the viewers (good or bad) is a film that I think did it's job. This filmmaker has something to say - a true point of view - and isn't afraid to present it, raw and unsanitized. Thank you for that.

Summary: RECOMMENDED, but not for everyone.
Review: This one was really fascinating. On the one hand, it looks totally LOW budget (like they spent about a dollar ninety five on production values). On the other hand, I found myself totally engrossed by it. The dialogue is sometimes stilted, but the performers really make it their own and I really believed the situations, in an almost uncomfortable way. A lot of this really rang true to me as I had a boyfriend that walked out on me too. Low budget as it is, the emotions are completely true, so I have to recommend this one, based on the interesting storyline and the super cast. I actually cried during the breakup scene (not an easy feat). Nice.

Review: I did not see my review. So here it is again. I do not understand why anyone would recommend this one? I guess there is no accounting for taste. The movie is flat out BORING! The dialog is dribble. I didn't care what happened to the characters, I just wanted to get away from them. They had nothing to say or any insight. There was no intimacy. There was no love. It is pretentious. A waste of time and money.

Summary: Beautiful, Moving, and Sad
Review: I picked this one up because I liked the cover art. I was really surprised after I watched it, though, because it truly evoked quite a lot of emotions out of me. At times the movie is incredibly thoughtful and moving, and sometimes it's laugh out loud funny - but in a subtle way. Other times it's downright sad and ultimately left me feeling depressed (not a bad thing). The film is basically about the choices that we make along the way, and how those choices affect those around us, as well as ourselves. It's not a new concept, surely, but it's handled here in a fresh and clever way. Even the ultra-low budget feel of the piece works in it's favor in creating a very REAL atmosphere. Most of the acting (with the exception of one actor) is pretty amazing for a low budget indie. I especially connected to the actor playing the part of the jilted boyfriend Joel. He's both funny and moving at the same time. I also enjoyed the work of the two best friend characters - Matt and Carrie, who happen to be straight (a clever twist on the usual movie stereotype where the plucky best friend if often gay). Though the themes of this movie are certainly universal, I think that it would probably only appeal to those interested in gay and/or indie films.

Summary: Love it or Hate it
Review: Wow, when looking over the different customer reviews for this film I was pretty surprised. It appears that most either really love it or really hate it. I found myself falling in the really LOVE it camp because I find that I've kept thinking about it days after my boyfriend and I actually sat down to watch it. Sure the dialogue is too cerebral at times, but the cool "Reality TV" feel of the piece more than makes up for it. All the actors embody their characters with such conviction that I never once thought that I was even watching actors. It makes the veiwer feel like a total voyeur, which I really liked. If you're gonna compare this film to big budget gay fluff like "The Birdcage" then do yourself a favor and skip this one. But if you like experimental work with a real point of view and a voice, then I recommend it!
