Summary: One of the best films ever made
Review: ....
This film is one of the most original films I've seen - I've been a fan of Jordan's for some time, and this is most definitely his masterpiece. His long-standing working partnership with Stephen Rea is all explained in this film, as the result of their work is so perfect.
The story begins in Ireland, when Fergus (Rea) and his IRA colleagues kidnap Jody (Whitaker), an English soldier, demanding that an Irish comrade be released from imprisonment in Ireland or Jody will be shot. Fergus guards Jody for the majority of the time and they form an unlikely friendship. Jody asks Fergus to look up his girlfriend, Dil, in London, and is then killed.
Fergus does indeed look up Dil, and falls in love with her, only to discover why Jody had insisted that Dil wasn't Fergus' type. I won't spoil the surprise too much.
Here the IRA re-enter the story, but I won't give anyhing else away. Suffice to say that this film is one of the best and most unusual you will ever see, and it deserves five stars every time.

Summary: Second best film of 92
Review: Behind Unforgiven this is the second best movie of 1992. It's one of the most surprising and thought provoking films I have seen. Davidson is amazing as Dil and Rea and Richardson are fine as well. The DVD shows adequite quality. The video could be sharper with less grain, but who cares, this movie isn't about the visuals.

Summary: Stephen Rea = incredible.
Review: I saw this film at least ten times back in its release days and on VHS, but held off on buying the DVD, thinking that I'd already worn out my viewings of it and would just be sick of it. Well, fed up with all the of the lackluster DVDs my collection was rapidly amassing, partially on the basis of idiotic word-of-mouth hype (like many Amazon reviews), I finally decided to go with something I knew was good, and bought it. Well, I've seen it another three times since, and I now really can't imagine any kind of movie collection without it. This is such a wonderful film because it deals with the more beautiful side of human emotion and nature surfacing despite circumstance. It isn't the film's "gimmick" that sells me (and in fact it made the movie a bit of an acquired taste for me...I didn't like it the first time I saw it), and in fact I hardly think about it at all now when I think of why I adore this film. It's the beauty of human nature reflected in its very-human characters in difficult, human situations. I think that the movie was made by its acting, particularly Stephen Rea, Jaye Davidson, and Forrest Whitaker. Stephen Rea in particular is absolutely pivotal to this movie's deserved acclaim, and I think he was robbed for not winning an award for his best role ever (in my opinion)...he gave Feargus a life and humanity that I think probably surprised even Neil Jordan himself.
The Crying Game is Neil Jordan's and Stephen Rea's best work ever and one of the best films I've ever seen. You owe it to yourself to at least view it once, although at the very reasonable price it's going for, my recommendation is to just go ahead and buy it. You could (and probably have, considering the DVD best-seller list here) do a lot worse.
One negative with the DVD: it isn't mastered in Dolby 5.1 (just 2.0), and there are no real extras to speak of. The film deserves so much better.

Summary: original, unforgettable, honest, bittersweet
Review: This is my favorite movie of all time! Never before have I seen such fine acting. Whitaker, Richardson, Jaye Davidson and Stephen Rea all deliver knockout performances in complex, intriguing roles. Both Rea and Davidson get to the emotional truth of their delicate relationship without resorting to heavy-handed dialogue or scenes. As mentioned b4, one of the questions this film asks is: What is the nature of love? Fergus' sacrifice for Dil at the end answers this perfectly. (What a luscious gentleman that Fergus is!) This film shows how love can transform the human heart.

Summary: A Would-Be Theatrical Triumph
Review: When I watched this movie at the time it was released in theaters, I did not like it. Then I watched it on HBO last year, and it was OK, but still not very good. The soundtack is good, even if not very original. My problem is that without Dil's shocking nude scene and sexual innuendo throughout this movie, the whole thing would have been completely bland and ordinary. Why should you care about the characters in this film? Because most of them are violent and dangerous people and some of them are of ambiguous [...]? And the worn-our scorpion tale told from prison at the end of this movie? I am sorry, but this movie plays on its shock value, and that's where it exhausts itself.

I felt that the Irish issues was merely used as a backdrop here, some would say abused, for the purpose of making some statement based on an obscene scene. The acting was good. And I have a lot of respect for Miranda Richardson, but the cast cannot save this would-be tale about the power of love.

Summary: Amazing
Review: This movie starts rather slow and in a way predictable. But there is always a little quirk that will change your perception of the previous scene. Brilliant.

Summary: One of The Best!
Review: The Crying Game is one of those rare perfect films. From the begining the driving factor behind the plot is human behavior; refrences are made abundant, rather Whitaker's kidnapped character is talking to his kidnappers about the fact that he knows he has to die for their cause or when Rhea's character decides to fulfill Whitaker's character's dying wish and look after his girlfriend (Davidson). When all is said and done the plot takes u on so many twist and turns through; love, deceit, politics, hatred, racism and even murder. The Crying Game, leaves you breathless and wondering how a film with so many twists and turns never once drops the ball, confuses you or even disappoints in any of it's subplots!! This film has the privalage of being one of the only modern day flicks with a true sense of atmosphere! The lighting is always a notch toned down and the mood is sultry and full of such a thick air of lust that you can cut it with a knife! This film was robbed at the '92 oscar's and it's a shame. Rhea and Davidson deserved to walk away with the prizes for their roles a tortured and deconstructed couple. This is one of the best films ever made and it deserves to be in your collection any film that can get it's point across without tearing down your emotions with blatant symbolism is brilliant in its honesty and interpertaion of life and that is what The Crying Game is about!

Summary: Top 5 in the 90's, top 50 all time
Review: I think this movie, even though it had great critical praise and many people saw and loved it, still did not get the recognition it deserved. Believe me, if you like movies and are in the mood for something a little different you cannot go wrong here. The DVD itself is good, with decent video and audio, but with little extras. I suggest you still pick this up, unless a special edition comes out. Brilliant filmmaking! Okay DVD.

Summary: really good movie!!!!!!!!!!
Review: I FIRST SAW THIS FILM ABOUT A WEEK AGO. I THINK IT IS A GREAT MOVIE BECAUSE IT IS SHOCKING AND YOU WONT FORGET IT. I THINK JAYE DAVIDSON AND STEPHAN REA SHOULD HAVE WON OSCARS FOR THEIR ROLES AS WELL AS FORREST WHITAKER.

ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN. P.S. I WISH JAYE DAVIDSON WOULD MAKE SOME MORE FILMS, HE IS A GREAT ACTOR.
