Summary: Wanna clear a room quickly?
Review: Here's what you do: Speak of any of the merits of the film A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. Soon, you'll be alone with your mecha-memories and Rouge City Blues. In theatres, the film failed to grab the imagination of filmgoers either looking for the technical fluidity and creative control of director Steven Spielberg or the dark, cynical story sense of original creator, Stanley Kubrick. After my first viewing I wrote a 3-star review that was pretty harsh on the collision of the two styles. But, could there be more to the film than all of that? After all, I thought about the film daily for at least 2 months after viewing. Now, with its DVD release, we get a chance to find out.

The first Act of the movie, like the innocent robo-boy, is the definite child of Spielberg, filled with hope and magic. The second Act, like the sleazy "Gigolo Joe", is very much the child of Kubrick, cold and harsh within a reality of destruction. The last act of the film is a concoction of the 2 styles as the hopeful mechanical boy pursues his Pinocchio-esque mission to become a real boy in the remains of New York City. Eventually (Well, thousands of years later) we meet the descendants of the mecha, a super-race that takes from the best of humans and the best of robots. Haley Joel Osment (THE SIXTH SENSE) plays David with all the nuances of an adult, easily one of the best child actors in years. This also speaks well of director Spielberg who often has guided child performances away from trouble. You hear that, George Lucas? Jude Law (THE TALENTED MISTER RIPLEY) is also superb as a sex machine whose street sense is at its core, as innocent as the David's quest. His dance-like movement is a pleasure to watch. The visual splendor of the film is a consistent work of art. This is a film of the future and many of the set pieces deliver the goods but they sometimes, along with the costuming are pretty consistent with today's fashion. A visit to Rouge City is a special effects marvel.

ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE is certainly Spielberg's most thought provoking film since Schindler's List. But, I imagine it still will not sit well with most first-time viewers. Most of my new enjoyment was solidifying thoughts I had post-theatrical viewing. The DVD offers a plethora of filmmaking documentaries devoted to elements of the film. Thus, it is one of the more satisfying documentaries available on DVD. This film is not for everyone but somewhere out there is an audience intrigued by the possibilities.

Summary: Interesting Idea, could have been done better
Review: The story idea is very interesting, but it could have been done a lot better. It gets a little too sentimental and strange at the end. The acting performances given by Jude Law and Haley Joel Osmet are outstanding. The film is well worth watching for their performances alone. The visual and special effects are stunning. The dvd contains some interesting documentaries.

Summary: Interesting but SLOW. Cool SFX
Review: Kubric had this thing for movies that move at a glacial pace. Speilberg obviously followed suit. I found myself using the FF button more and more. The really cool effects (sunken city, future race) didn't show up until the last 20 minutes. The plot is unoriginal, the acting uninspired, the action uneventful, and overall it's a bore. It's eye-candy with SOME interesting points. The only part I thought was worth it was the evolution of the Mecha. Even that got stolen from Asimov and Anime''.

Summary: Sad and evil film
Review: Given the title, I would guess that Kubrick's intention in starting this project was to introduce the film world to the metaphysical and ethical questions that life-appoximating machines would raise. The only philosophical question raised by Spielberg's product, however, is whether artificial intelligence might one day correct real stupidity. While I'm sure Teddy, the talking teddy-bear, was Kubrick's idea, (yeah right), I doubt Kubrick would have approved of the Chris Rock and Robin Williams cameos (which say it all). In my view this film is a cynical insult to movie fans. But as would be Ricky Martin finishing a Beethoven score, it's a triumph for false consciousness everywhere.

Summary: Meh
Review: Well, I think this movie wasted 3 valuable hours of my precious life, and now I can't get them back! Arg! I was utterly bored throughout the entirety of this movie. That actor, Haley or whatever looks really funny, and annoys the hell out of me. If the robot kid was portrayed by some other child actor, I would maybe have not hated this movie so much. The movie drags on for way too long, and I found myself watching the seconds slowy tick by on my watch more entertaining than this movie. The acting didn't come off as very good either. Overall I would say the only thing worth seeing in this movie is Teddy, the talking robot /toy teddy bear. ROCK ON TEDDY!!

Meh don't buy this, in fact don't even rent it unless the video store is so desperate they give it to you for free, and even then I would advise not taking it.

Review: The movie was incredible from start to finish, although I have seen reviews about how the ending was no good. You just have to think about it, depending on the person you may feel differently about it. But personally I enjoyed it and the idea of it all astounded me.

Summary: A great surprise.
Review: I wrote this movie off as sappy and sentimental when I saw the previews. "His love is real, but he is not." Gimme a break. So I waited for video to see it. Now I wish I would have seen it on the big screen. Not only is it an amazing feast for the eyes (great special effects AND Jude Law...what more could a gal ask for?), but an unexpectedly deep, disturbing, yet enchanting film. Haley Joel Osment is incredible, as is Jude Law. After 3 viewings, I haven't quite figured it out, but I'm going to enjoy watching it over and over until I do.

Summary: Long, slow, and unabashedly melodramatic
Review: Let me start with the ending first. This part was a total unnecessarily drawn out, and over emotional part of the film. I agree with another reviewer, stop the film when the boy finally finds the blue fairy. That was his goal throughout the movie. There were few moments of joy in this robot's immortal life, all the pain the we are forced to witness just makes you emotionally numb at the end and checking your watch waiting for the ending (if you haven't turned the movie off already). It started promising enough, with a good concept, but Spielberg made it too hard to bond with the little creature that was nothing but an embodiment of pain and loneliness. The film is visually beautiful, but without a strong story, it is an overall disappointment.
