Rating: Summary: cerebral comedy Review: Miss Firecracker was obviously a play before a movie. The plotlines are deep, as are the emotions of the characters. I do not care for Tim Robbins, but I will make an exception here. Wonderful movie!
Rating: Summary: keeping your chin up Review: Okay this is my FAVORITE movie. Period. Holly Hunter portrays Carnelle as hilarious while still able to draw empathy. Every supporting character is an ensemble of eccentricities, yet are so believable. This movie is the perfect mood picker-upper. 5 stars? Give it 10!
Rating: Summary: The Best Movie! Review: Okay this is my FAVORITE movie. Period. Holly Hunter portrays Carnelle as hilarious while still able to draw empathy. Rating: Summary: Holly Hunter, Tim Robbins, and Mary Steenburgeen are great Review: This movie is so funny and at the same time very sad. It takes place in Yazoo City Mississippi. Every year there is a big fair and the high point in the Miss Firecracker Contest. Holly Hunter worships her cousin Elaine played to perfection by Mary Steenburgeen. Elaine was once a winner in the Miss Firecracker Contest, and Holly Hunter wants to enter. Elaine has come back to deliver a speech as she has moved on and made a successful life for herself. Holly Hunter has no confidence and it means everything to her to win. The movie is full of crazy characters and really shows southern life. Tim Robbins plays Mary Steenburgeen's brother and Holly Hunter's cousin. He is so funny in this movie. Holly Hunter is great as the girl trying so hard to win. Mary Steenburgeen is beautiful as a past winner but her character is vain and selfish. This movie is so funny and you will love it. Great acting, story, script, and cast
Rating: Summary: The original go-go girl! Review: Watching Holly Hunter in this movie is amazing - reminds me of the hyper opening scene in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, with Debbie Reynolds. The whole cast is fantastic, and the setting oozes down-home ambience. If you can ignore the dopey last scene, you'll agree this one's a blast!
Rating: Summary: keeping your chin up Review: Why are there so many overlooked Holly Hunter films? It beats me. Here she plays the short and gawky Carnelle who's one ambition is to win the local beauty pagent and become "Miss Firecracker". But although both Ms Hunter and her character try to scene-steal at every opportunity, this is an excellent ensemble piece with a cast that includes Mary Steenburgen, Tim Robbins and Alfre Woodard. Essentially this is a triumph of the human spirit piece, but without the usual hollywood spin. It earns its four stars by exuding the sense that everyone who worked on it believed it was a labour of love. It misses out on the fifth star by showing its theatrical roots too often.
