Rating: Summary: A Merchant and Ivory Joint? Review: This is not your typical Merchant/Ivory period film with lavish scenery. The settings go from France to America and don't take the focus away from the characters. There is just enough to show you the change that the characters have to experience. One of the central themes appears to be alienation.Although we see quite a bit of all the characters, the main character is Channe played by Leelee Sobieski. Throughout the story, we are watching her adjust to her surroundings. At the beginning, her parents adopt a young French boy, and we see here reaction to this new sibling. We watch her handle her friendship with a flamboyant young boy who begins to embarrass her a bit later. After the family moves to America, she tries to adjust to a new lifestyle in a small town. In all, I believe Ms. Sobieski does a fine job. For the other actors, I really thought Kris Kristofferson did a fine job as the father, a writer and war veteran. I would recommend watching this film.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: This movie had the potential to be really good--the acting talent present in the film is superb, but the story line moves too slow and becomes boring after awhile. Instead of bringing out emotion and introspection, this film led to extreme frustration . . . I watched this movie because I read how overlooked and unrecognized it was in the theaters . . . Folks, do yourselves a favor and watch Dangerous Beauty instead . . .you won't be disappointed with its quality.
Rating: Summary: A Waste of Time Review: This movie is full of nonsense! One of the worse I have seen so far!
Rating: Summary: Thoughtful review pollution syndrome Review: This was one of the best films ever made and the reviewer just below me slanders it with such a heartlessly low rating. I am partly against customer comments on these sights given that so often people write very short and insubstantive reviews with low ratings. Few people with negative opinions of film take the time to articulate them well--just as in politics! So I am attempting to dilute that unjust rating with my 5, which is entirely deserved.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! A very good movie...a must see Review: This was one of those rare movies where it held my attention the whole time, and I didn't start to think about something else, like how much time was left, and when it will get good. I was also extremelly thankful for the subtitles. It was truly superb acting by Leelee Sobieski. She was okay in Deep Impact, but this just blew me away. I could relate with the characters. Nothing at all in the movie seemed like it had been rehearsed over and over, which is truly good acting. The movie never goes dry...and it never gets too emotional either. This is a must see.
