Review: Come on people give Mariah a break, she just had a nervous breakdown! she tries so hard for everyone and especially the fans! Judging by the trailer I can tell the movie is gonna rule! blow them box offices away - that's for sure! Even if it doesn't the soundtrack definetly will, her next single 'Never too far' is so amazing and it just blows you away! go to ... and hear what i'm talkin bout people!! it's another #1 - for sure!!!! lol

Review: I was hoping that Mariah Carey would prove everyone wrong and make a film that actually does something for her acting career. But judging from the cheesefest that was this trailer, she's gonna stink up cinemas everywhere big-time! I mean am I really supposed to believe Mariah Carey as a poor backpacking singer! She would have been better off in a movie like The Bodyguard, somewhere she could play herself. A character film like this is far too taxing for someone who's had so little acting experience.

Review: Mariah fans will dig this flick for sure--and I bet a lot of others, too. Considering she's sold over ten million per album she has released and has more sales than any female recording artist in history, I think her fans alone can fuel this film's success. Congrats, Mariah!!!!! I can't wait to see it...

Summary: This doesn't look too promising. . .
Review: Based soley on that trailer, I think Mariah could use a few more acting lessons. Clearly she's playing it safe by taking a role doing something she's already famous for. That's not exactly a real stretch. I don't think people will be interested in paying nine bucks to see a 90-minute music video with a predictable storyline on the side. Perhaps it might have a somewhat respectable showing since she has a big fan base. But If it tanks, I hope she doesn't get Madonna syndrome and defiantly makes one awful flick after another; or worse yet, make another film with Da'brat.

Summary: Not as bad as I was expecting, but still -- not good
Review: I'm surprised so many people on here are giving "Glitter" rave reviews, given its rank in the Bottom 100 Worst Movies Ever on the IMDB. (I'm guessing a lot of these folks are Mariah music fans, which I am admittedly not.) I'd put it somewhere in the middle. There are "good" bad movies (i.e. "Showgirls") and "bad" bad movies; "Glitter" falls into the second camp. While Mariah turns out to be a surprisingly good actress -- she certainly puts Madonna to shame, much as I hate to say it -- this film never manages to transcend into being anything other than utterly banal. Indeed, her acting skills are the only reason I'm not giving it a one-star rating. The rags-to-riches story is as trite as it gets, and the ending is predictable within the first five minutes. None of the characters are particularly interesting, and I didn't buy Max Beesley's "New Yawk" accent for even the briefest second (he plays Dice, the Love Interest, but is British in real life). While it's not in the Worst Movie Ever Made category, "Glitter" has few redeeming qualities.

Then there's the small matter of period detail, which is nearly 100% off-base. The film is (inexplicably) set in the big-hair, big-shoulders, skinny-tie era of 1983-1984, yet the characters' fashions and hairstyles look like they're fresh off the new-millennium catwalk. Aside from Mariah's cover of Robert Palmer's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" -- which in the film is, in an amusingly ironic turn, supposed to be her character Billie's big debut single -- the music is late 1990s-style, not early 1980s. Even the film's restaurants don't jibe; Asian-French fusion cuisine (consumed on Billie and Dice's first "date") didn't exist even in New York nearly 20 years ago. But I'm harping here.

I'd recommend this movie only if you're a big Mariah fan and only if sappy, predictable, tragedy-laced love stories are your cup of tea.

Summary: It Glitters! It Glitters! It Glitters!
Review: Ok, so can she sing, and she's pretty, but can she act? The answer is yes, as she proves in her first starring role. The movie was condemned from the very earliest, and there's quite a bit of people who say to me, "Glitter was awful", and I say, "Have you seen it?", and the answer is always "No." Essentially, the movie is Mariah's life, except in the '80s, and with an absolutley terrible childhood (neither happend to Mariah). The movie is actually very emotional, and is very sad in the end. Of course with "Never Too Far" playing in the background, anything can be sad. Bottom Line: Played up. But that's made up.

Review: Mariah Carey was awesome in Glitter. This movie had a good story line as well as good actors. It is a fun movie with no real deap plot line. But I really like it. Contains good music as well. I think if it wasn't called Glitter, more people would have seen it. That's why I think I did't get such great reviews. But if you like Mariah CArey...this is a must!

Summary: A decent drama containing a promising acting debut by Mariah
Review: Being a college film/music student/fanatic, this review may sound biased because I think Mariah Carey is one of the most astoundingly talented pop/R&B vocalists of all time. Her voice transcends beauty and strong, emotional compassion. As for her first starring role in a major motion picture, Mariah has revealed that she has promise as an actress. Yes, almost every major film critic tore this movie apart (and deemed her acting to be very bad), but in my eyes, not because I love her music, these critics were a bit harsh. Granted, Mariah did smile a lot, cried in some scenes, laughed and so forth...this doesn't mean that she has no range whatsoever. I thought her acting was genuine and naturally sincere (and she looked stunningly beautiful throughout). Yes, she's not Meryl Streep...but with more practice and more supporting roles, I think Mariah can improve.

I thought the script for this film was mediocre (although the overall feel of the early 80s club scene seemed appropriate and true to that decade). There were many holes in the various storylines (kind of like Pearl Harbor's script which just plain ruined that film).

I think if the script was written better...hence many scenes needed to be longer with more dramatic tension/emotion...this film could've been much better. I don't want to get into nitpicky details about certain scenes...but a couple bothered me. Yes, there is a short sex scene while "Lead the Way" is playing in the background. So Mariah's Billie and Max Beesley's Dice embrace behind what looks like some kind of glass shutter...a few critics said some screening audiences erupted in laughter at this scene. Does a moviegoer actually have to see the sex to be satisfied...why can't a scene like this be short/discreet, simple, and sweet? Also...toward the end of the film...Billie finds out about some tragic news (don't want to say what)...and then there is not much of a response from her character...and then she just goes out on stage at Madison Garden to sing "Never Too Far." I'm sorry to say, but this part of the film needed to be rewritten...I'm not saying it didn't work or it was Carey's fault, it just needed more of an emotional tug.

Overall, once again, if the script was more refined, Glitter could've been much better. Just jumping from one scene to another, just doesn't connect with an audience. The storylines that needed to be drawn out MORE, were the ones with Billie and her mother, her relationship with DJ Dice (Beesley), and Dice's "deal" with producer Timothy (Terrence Howard). Also there should've been MORE to Billie's rise to superstardom. The film portrayed her career in an hour and a half...from back-up singer to full-fledged superstar (only portrays her rise pretty much from a 10-week #1 run of her single, "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"). I expected to be somewhat moved by this film and was...but in the end, you can't entirely blame the actors for that when they don't have much to work with.

Max Beesley (an English actor), pulled off the New Yawk accent very well...and his acting as a hot-shot club deejay was quite good. He and Carey had real chemistry...only one would wish more was added to the storyline of their relationship. Also, rap star Da Brat and Tia Texada are hilarious as Billie's dancers and long-time girlfriends.

Lastly, many singers (as you all know) that try to cross over to film don't quite get there (Madonna...except she was outstanding in A League of Their Own...Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard...and maybe a few others). But there are those who did cross over and actually made it...Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, and many others. Most people will probably think it was unwise for Ms. Carey to try and act in a film. When in the end, there is nothing wrong at all with trying (to me, it looks like she just needs some more confidence in herself as an actress). Besides, she is starring in an independent film with Mira Sorvino, called Wise Girls, that is due out next year...and in this film, her character in no way reflects her life at all.

Maybe, Wisegirls will (hopefully) convince moviegoers that Mariah has a chance at something she's always wanted to do. In the end, though, she'll always have her magnificent pipes. And I am one music lover that will defend her to the hilt...she does not warble, she has an amazing voice...and she actually writes the majority of her own music (unlike most singers/groups today). The Glitter CD is worth every penny you spend if you like three genres melted into one: pop ballads, R&B/rap, and uptempo 80s dance hits...all (showcased) in the film which are stellar, esp. the ballads!!! :)

Overall Grade of film: B- ...For a fan, I still really enjoyed this film and commend Mariah for her good, honest work here. :)
