Rating: Summary: Stellar! "Glitter" shines brightly. Review: Did half the negative reviewers of this film even see the same film as I did? I saw "Glitter" starring Mariah Carey and Max Beesley...is there another film by the same title that I don't know about? "Glitter" is the story of Billie Frank (Mariah Carey), a young woman with a dream: to someday become a famous singer and reunite with her mother. As a child, Billie became an orphan after her mother (who's African-American) was obligated to abandon her. Billie's father is white, and didn't bother taking her in. Now, years later when she becomes an adult, she is still searching for her mother. Billie and two friends she made in the foster care, join another beautiful woman and become a foursome group, only Billie and her friends are backup singers and the other girl is the lead. But the producer of the group uses Billie's voice and makes the lead girl lip-sync because she cannot sing and is only the lead because she's beautiful. When a bad boy DJ known as Dice (Max Beesley) finds out that it is Billie who's actually singing and not the other girl, he wants to get her into singing and becomes her producer. Billie and Dice soon get romantically involved as Billie's fame rises, but the pressures of being in the spotlight also causes tragedy...and, in the end, happiness. I thought "Glitter" was a very touching film. It has a very sad ending, but also turns out to be happy. And Mariah Carey CAN act...don't listen to those damn' critics, they usually put down the best films, anyway. Max Beesley is a natural as Billie's producer turned boyfriend. Mariah and Max Beesley have great chemistry together! It's so sad to find out what happens to Dice at the end of the movie...but I don't wanna tell you 'cause I'll ruin the film for you! The DVD is also very nicely packaged. Not a lot of extras but this wasn't a very big film so it doesn't need to have a lot of extras. It includes a director's commentary, two Mariah Carey music videos ("Loverboy" and "Never Too Far"), subtitles in English and French, filmographies of the cast, scene selections, theatrical trailers for "Glitter", "Center Stage", and "Dance With Me", digitally mastered audio and anamorphic video, audio English 5.1 (Dolby Digital), and both widescreen and full frame presentations. I think one of the reasons why "Glitter" didn't do so well in the box office was because of it's most unfortunate release date--9/11/01. And I don't think anybody went to the movies that entire week, so no matter what, at least in the first week of its release, the film would've flopped. Also, bad rap from so-called professional critics. Every professional review of "Glitter" that I saw gave it negative reviews and low star-ratings. Really people, it's not as bad as you think. It's actually good! Personally, I think "Glitter" will do better with it's DVD release. Sometimes I think it should have gone straight to a DVD/VHS release. But all in all, excellent and entertaining movie. Even the plot and dialouge are not bad! "Glitter" is definitely a must for all Mariah fans, but even if you do not like Mariah Carey, you can still appreciate a little entertaining film about love, tragic loss, hope, joy, and inspiration!
Rating: Summary: 5 STARS FOR ACTRESS VALERIE PETTIFORD Review: I rented this movie despite the critics and was pleasantly surprised when I saw my old friend Valerie Pettiford's face fill the screen in the opening scene. It had been years since I saw Val and it was fantastic to see how grown up she had gotten and the excellent performance she pulled off as Billie's mother. So Valerie, where ever you are, congrads on being great in a film that was so so. Love, Your ex-dancing buddy Margaret Johnson (Hodge) P.S., I liked the soundtrack too. Took me back to my clubbing days.
Rating: Summary: Don't Waste Your Time Review: Ok 3 reasons not to see this movie: (1) Mariah Carey can't act. (2) The story was written by a monkey with a crayon. (3) You will want to jump off a building half way through. I would give this movie 0 stars but that apparently isn't an option. They should of paid people to go see this movie it was so bad.
Rating: Summary: Good Movie! Review: I think people felt like atacking this movie was the popular thing to do at the time it came out, and people started buying into the hype that it was bad. I don't think that even half the people who attacked this movie even saw it, and that's sad. This movie is NOT horrible, but it's not the best movie ever made either. It's a GOOD movie. Like someone said in a different review, it's your basic rags-to-riches story, but it does have its moments. Mariah Carey did a good job in her acting debut, and the rest of the actors were good as well. Just give this movie a chance. I'm almost certain that you won't find this movie to be as horrible as you've heard it was.
Rating: Summary: Oh come on, it wasn't that bad! Review: Considering that I NEVER listen to critics and other people's opinions. I found the film really good. Mariah was really good and she pulled off some very emotional stuff. i thought at first it was going to be the same type singer movie. Singer gets noticed, she hits big, she goes through a low, and then comes back stronger than ever but there was a lot of twists! It was a very emotional movie!
Rating: Summary: This movie is a must for any DVD collection! Review: Ok, first of all this movie is really bad, but just like those movies that are oh so bad but oh so good- this is the case. I actually paid to see this in the movie theatre for the entertainment, after watching the movie I can see why Mariah shut it down for awhile. With all that said, this movie rules! I love this movie because it is hilarious from Mariah's character (Billy) to her boyfriend/manager Ice, this guy should have won an Oscar....well not really but he is the best by far. If you are an avid movie watcher and can actually enjoy some of those bad movies out there then this movie is perfect for you. My parting comments are keep an eye out for her cat in the movie, its amazing that the ... cat never ages.
Rating: Summary: Is This a Joke or What? Review: Following the lead of many pop divas who want to make the transition from the music charts to the box office, Mariah Carey stars in this big-budget turkey that had flop written all over it from the start. In a film that she claims is semi-autobiographical, Mariah proves that she no longer is the sweetheart of the mainstream American pop scene in what many will see as an attempt by Ms. Carey to move from predominately caucasian audiences to one that is urban. In "Glitter," Carey plays Billie Frank, a biracial child who was the product of a fling between a black lounge singer and a married caucasian man. Billie, who is placed in a foster home and grows up there with the support of two friends (played by rapper Da Brat and Tia Texeda) appears to be on the verge of major success. While singing back up for a talentless singer named Sylk, Billie is discovered by a New York deejay, Julian Dice (played by Max Beesley), who pours his energy into producing the next big thing in the New York music scene. As the movie progresses, Billie and Julian develop a relationship that not only involves romance, but also plenty of success along the way. Ultimately, like in many romances there is a tragic ending, however the film ends with a positive conclusion that some might find heartbreaking (not to me). The film, which was supposed to be Mariah's vehicle to film stardom was also tied to the release of an album by the same name under her new short-lived contract with Virgin Records (that contract was canceled and Mariah was given a fee to walk away from the company due to the terrible sales of the album) was a major dud upon its' release in theaters and soon found itself on video store shelves soon after. "Glitter," directed by Vonde Curtis Hall, is not an Oscar-calibre film worth watching. If you are tired of hearing about Mariah's antics on the news, than this film won't help you relieve you from such pain. Besides the fact that film has excellent zooming of scenes and the fact that in one scene we can see both towers of the World Trade Center still standing before that horrible day in September 2001, there is not a reason in this world to watch this turkey. Someone should have named this film "Butterball," because just like a turkey, it stuffed with ... and will put you to sleep in a short time. "Glitter" only gives us proof that Mariah is over the hill and that she not only alienated audiences due to the bad publicity she had in 2001, but also due to her confusion about her ethnic roots. Mariah was born on Long Island, New York, and not in New York City. Mariah's mother is Irish (as in caucasian) and her father is of mixed Afro-European descent (he is Venezuelan). Mariah was discovered due to the good deed her friend, singer Brenda K. Starr, did for her when she forwarded a tape of Mariah's vocals to Sony Music Head Tommy Mottola (Mariah's ex-husband). Therefore if she claims this is a semi-autobiographical film, than Mariah must be on something if she can't honestly tell her own life story. If you are looking for a sedative, "Glitter" is the film for you. If you're not, skip this Ishtar-esque flop and look for something else to watch.
Rating: Summary: Ok, so it's not Gone With The Wind........ Review: I actually watched this movie with the intentions of having a good laugh. All the reviews said I would however, I must say I really enjoyed the movie. I am not a big fan of Mariah's but the girl can sing. She's not a great actress but she brought a sweetness to the character she played. Hey, I don't think Julia Roberts is a great actress either and if she can be on the big screen, why can't Mariah? For some reason Mariah got a bad rap from the press, it really wasn't a bad movie. Rent it on a rainy night, break out the popcorn and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Cute Movie and Entertaining Review: Max Beesley has got it going on. His and Mariah's Chemistry was electric. I smiled, laughed and Cried. The first time I saw it is was Okay, but times 2-10 I keep seeing something new each time. This has become one of my favorite movies. It all comes down to It was a Romance, Success story, filled with emotion. I recommend this film as sweet entertainment. You'll feel the emotion throughout the entire film. Give credit to the actors and don't blame them for a less than perfect script, they did the best with what they were given. Max Beesley is dynamic, through the whole movie his eyes alone tell the underlying story.
