Summary: Movie of the week quality
Review: "Cadence" is not another Vietnam-era movie, although it was lumped in with them at the time it was (briefly) in theaters.The set-up -- a white soldier is convicted and placed in with a black prisoner population in the opening days of the Vietnam War in the mid-1960s -- is new and has the potential to tell a genuinely interesting story, and a strong cast seems to underscore that this is going to be a film worth watching. But the film never rises above TV movie of the week quality, with single note personalities substituting for well-rounded characters, quick set pieces passing for character development, and a denouement that puts a Band-Aid on the problems the characters in the movie all have. Why Martin Sheen got involved in this film I can understand -- his son Charlie was starring in it, and he wanted to do a project with him. But what on earth did they tell Lawrence Fishburne? This film squanders his talent, along with the talents of the actors playing the other convicted soldiers. The film repeatedly makes moves towards being something better, with segments that surely must have had good intentions behind them in the writing stage. But whether they never made it into the script, or the director or studio saw fit to remove them, we're left instead with half a movie, one in which the issues of racism, the criminal system, family and military society are approached, but never discussed and certainly no point of view ever makes it across. If, instead, we had humor, action or pathos, we could at least be distracted by that, but ultimately, all we get is Martin Sheen getting drunk and trying to climb a fence in his underwear. Whatever the merits of the scene, it's certainly no substitute for a script truly worth of Sheen, Sheen and Fishburne....

Summary: A Treat for Sheen Fans
Review: A real treat for fans of the Sheen/Estevez clan, featuring the always excellent Martin Sheen with his famous son Charlie Sheen - one of Charlie's more appealing performances - and his lesser-known son Ramon Estevez who does a great job as suck-up assistant Gerald to Martin's Sargeant role. Ramon definitely inherited the family good looks - go to the cast and crew feature on the DVD to see a good pic of him. This movie grows on you - the more you watch, the more you notice. A really fantastic song in the church scene which was written and performed by the actor Harry Stewart (Sweetbread). It's touching to see Martin perform with his sons.

Summary: For Bean, For Sweet!!
Review: As far as dramas go, this is one of the best I have seen. It is a terrific coming of age story involving tragedy, team work, and the tough choices morality can make a person face. The story is excellent (I could write a lot more, but I try not to give to much away). The main character is Franklin Bean, an Army Private. Pvt. Bean is sentenced to 90 days in the stockade after hearing the news that his father died, getting unauthorized tattoos, going on a drinking binge and hitting an MP. In the stockade, Pvt. Bean's (who is white) "roommates" are 5 black prisoners. Pvt. Bean does not fit in, not because of his fellow prison mates, but because he does not want to belong. The stockade is overseen by Sgt. Otis McKinney, a racist disciplinarian who is constantly trying to get Bean on "his team". Despite Bean's desire to be alone, Bean does pick a side. The film ends in tragedy, and Pvt. Bean is faced with the gut wrenching decision between what is right and what is right. While the scene I am referring to is short, I think it was one of the most powerful movie scenes showing a young person trying to make a decision where both alternatives seem to be the right thing to do, and the path he chooses has drastically different outcomes. I never even heard of this movie in the theaters. However, I feel this is one of the greatest "coming of age" stories I have ever seen. I think this is one of the best "unknown" movies I have ever seen. The screenplay writing is absolutely brilliant, though I will admit I had to watch the movie a couple of times before I saw the movie as more than a story about some guy in a military prison. This is definitely not a happy movie. I don't think this is the type of movie I pop in the DVD player and cuddle with a date on the couch. I would classify the movie as a sad drama. I think this movie is definitely a must see!

Review: I finally saw "Cadence" while I was visiting my family in Texas awhile back and it was a great movie. Charlie Sheen has to go to military camp for 90 days after hitting a cop. Martin Sheen plays the role of the sergeant at the base. "Cadence" features one of both Charlie's and Martin Sheen's best performances in my opinion. Charlie Sheen must survive the 90 days in the camp in order to get out alive. He has to go to Vietnam afterwards. This movie will keep you interested while you watch to see if Franklin Bean, (Charlie Sheen), can learn to get along with his black roomates and how he will put up with the sergeant, (Martin Sheen), while he's there. You will remember "Cadence" for the performances that all the actors put on and some of the other sequences such as getting the windmill to work. But you'll remember it even more for the song "End of My Journey" after you hear it at the end of the movie. There's no doubt that it's the best Christian song I've ever heard. If you like movies that deal with the Army, you'll like "Cadence." In my opinion, it's one of the best movies of the decade and one movie you can't miss.

Review: I have loved this sleeper movie since it came out it is a fine piece of work.And the charactors draw you in. You feel the depth of the movie all the way through.You can trust me on this when I say you will laugh and cry.The music was exceptional it was made for the movie.I had a special tie to this movie because of the time I served in the military.It is really hard to explain to people who have'nt served how you have such a kinderedship with the people you served with.I think this movie will help them understand.You feel what it is to be the new guy,and what it is to fit in,and then when it comes time to leave the pain of missing the friends you've made.This movie is magical! ...

Summary: Here's the Scoop on End of My Journey
Review: I haven't seen this DVD yet but could tell that many people loved this piece of music as much as I did. I was captivated by it several years ago, and called the studio to find out more. Here's the amazing part: Harry Stewart is not a professional musician or actor. He's a street person that Martin Sheen met in LA, I think. Sheen asked him to perform in the movie, which is why he appears in several scenes but has few lines. Here's the other best part: Harry Stewart wrote End of My Journey! ASCAP had never heard of it when I called - and this was a few years back so something may have changed by now. But I doubt it. I really wish Mr. Stewart could get this song copyrighted, because tons of us would pay to be able to sing it, and he'd be properly rewarded for his talent.
