Rating: Summary: Banal story, insipid acting, but carries a useful message Review: I rented this movie because I'd heard some controversy about it earlier. I found the story a little tedious to watch. Betty and her daughter had a hard time getting beyond looking pained and confused. The husband alternately raged and whined about his ill-treatment in the USA. The escape from Iran and the final scene were laughable. The depiction of family life in Tehran was a little over-dramatized, but no more inaccurate than Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, for example. But there was a useful point: when we leave our native country we no longer have the same rights the we live by in our own country. This message is particularly important for US citizens who have become very comfortable with all kinds of individualistic rights. In fact, this movie shows us that marriage and child custody may work very, very differently in other countries. So beware.
Rating: Summary: Interesting movie Review: Sally Field plays, an American who marries an Iranian and has a child. They go back to Iran for a visit and, to her horror, he tells her he's decided to stay there and she finds she has no rights. If she wants to leave, she has to leave her daughter behind. She refuses and the story continues. I can't say everything in this movie is accurate but from information I have found it is true that women in Islamic countries have limited rights and men do have more rights especially re: marriage and children. I thought it was a very good movie. Again it is a movie not a documentary but it was based on someones true experience.
Rating: Summary: too much ado about marital problems Review: this whole story is the result of a marriage gone bad. the story of a depressed, confused husband and a stubborn, unsympathic wife. what happened to Betty M. has nothing to do with Islam and women, but everything to do with inflexibility of both the husband and the wife and their lack of commitment to their marriage. ultimately Betty M. seizes the opportunity to make a lot of money by trashing a people and their culture. and Hollywood seizes the opportunity to trash Islam as a whole. Betty M. doesn't say anything good about Iran even though she holds on dearly to her beautiful Persian carpets. the two stars go Sally Field for her portrayal of the protagonist, i only hope she did not believe it all! Betty M. doesn't look anything like Sally Field. by the way i suggest that "Betty" changes her last name since it's an islamic word!

Rating: Summary: This movie is full of misleading and wrong info.about Islam. Review: Hi. I have seen the whole movie. I really have to say that this movie's director didn't care and search for the true information about Islamic laws. So you dear viewers, I am not going to tell you, oh please don't see the movie, it is bad. What I ask you to do is to go and search your selves for the correct info. I found out that islam.org is a good source to learn about Islam. and it is free.

Rating: Summary: Ths is a true story Review: This movie is a depiction of a true story. This is based on a story of a woman, that this really happened to. If you check it out you can find it in the book section of this site. I don't know why you want to sensor someones story. Not all the Muslims characters are potrayed as bad people in this movie. It is just about some bad people who did some horrible things to a woman. And you all know that the Islamic take on rights is different than our standards. THIS IS A TRUE STORY!!! and sally is great in it
Rating: Summary: Encourages false beliefs on islam and its practices BIAS Review: Sally Field is very convincing as an actress and surely, Brian Gilbert a good director. However, I'm amazed by the review of the Amazon. If this this movie shows a particular experience lived by a particular person, how comes that this is generalized to islam and islamic practices. It's a shame for the Amazon by the subjective approach of Leonard Maltin's guide. He seems to fall prey to the facility of degrading ISLAM,("she has no right as a women, a mother or a wife") which is a way of life of millions have chosen to adopt and more by saying something which is completly false and bias.
Rating: Summary: If there is a Zero star I will not hesitate to give it Review: This is one of the "junk movies" that intend to defame people of other cultures and relegions. I would give it a bold "0" stars.
Rating: Summary: salted with truth, but brimming with negative stereotypes Review: It is sad to note that this woman, whom Sally portrayed never bothered to learn about her husband or his country before she went. She lacked basic understanding of cultural differences. The directors too seemed to view the world from a narrow minded culturally biased view point. Islamic law, as stated by the one person who represented ISLAMIC teachings told the woman she had rights, yet we never hear that in the reviews. Only anti-Islamic propaganda. We can go to the local women's shelter in our own community and find stories of abuse and terror, but that does mean American culture or the predominate religious beliefs within the country teach that women have no rights. While the story is loosely based on the experiences of a real woman, the director and writers seemed more interested in casting a negative view of Muslim women and their rights, than telling the story of what it is like to live in a foreign country that is in the midst of a revolution.
