Rating: Summary: The best movie on the planet! Review: The movie is the best and Jennifer Lopez also does an outstanding job as Selena. She portrayed Selena to the best of her ability and left me speechless. I think that this is the best representation of Selena made so far since her tragic death in March 1995.
Rating: Summary: A tear jerker! Review: I really enjoyed this movie. It's all about Selena and her family. I was very sad at the end of the movie. I only heard about Selena once before her death, but now I know much more. I'm sorry, but I can't tell you about the movie. It's too sad.
Rating: Summary: About Selena Review: I think this movie was one of the saddest I have seen. I can relate to it because we are about the same age and did the typical girl things (except the singing). It is so sad because it is about a rising star, someone who aspires to be "somebody" and life started to get better for her and the family. She finally had a nice house, nice car, nice husband that the family accepts and it all ended suddenly. I was so moved by this story that I couldn't stop thinking about it for a long time. You wish for someone that decent to have a good long life but it was cut short because of someone's jealousy. I only wish she was still alive. END
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable movie. More than I expected. Review: Jennifer Lopez does an outstanding job and gives us something extra to remember about Selena! The soundtrack is great! See this movie and be amazed with Selena's short lived life! It's amazing how talented and famous she was. Most of us (English Speaking) never knew... until it was too late. END
Rating: Summary: This is an excellent piece that anyone would surely enjoy Review: I didn't know anything about Selena, until I had the priviledge to view this piece. Not only did it help me to understand Selena's life, it also helped me to see what type of genuine person she really was. I truly wish that she had more concert videos out. I enjoyed Jennifer Lopez's performance so much. Selena was and still is the greatest. END
Rating: Summary: Selena Review: The movie really touched me. Today I'm 26 years old and I didn't know Selena until I watched the movie. Pray for us Selena from up high in Heaven. Selena I think you know what I mean.
Rating: Summary: A movie that impacts all of us Review: This movie depicts the life of Selena Quintilla-Perez from her rise to music as a child to her death at the tender age of 23. Director Gregory Nava couldn't have directed this movie better because he directed it perfectly. Jennifer Lopez did an A+ job portraying Selena and on top of that bares a striking resemblance to her. Edward James Olmos and Constance Marie were also great as Abraham and Marcella Quintilla. Edward James Olmos shows off his versatility and what a job they did with make-up and all that stuff for Constance Marie as her character got older on top of her top-notch performance. Jon Seda did a great as Selena's husband Chris along with Jacob Vargas playing A.B. and that actress who plays Suzie. The ending is sad but unforgetable and this is a top-tier movie that should have won some awards (Damn you Oscars!). This movie is jaw-dropping and heart-warming!
Rating: Summary: There is some good in this movie, but it is a search Review: This movieography of slain Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla Perez undoubtedly has good intentions (produced with the assistance of her obviously devastated family) but falls short of intended greatness for several very critical reasons.
First off, even by Hollywood's standard, Selena looks too perfect to have been a real-life person. Prior to becoming an international sensation, Selena was a homegirl from Corpus Christi, Texas.
The 'perfect' looks of everybody give this an icky TV movie feeling, also ignoring the fact that it was a big screen release. Physical imperfections would have brought the characters closer to their real life counterparts and perhaps given this film it's greater due. They were ordinary people who touched the world in extrordinary ways.
I also would have loved to see more of Selena's singing. I consider it an irony that a movie about a singer (staring a person who would largely launch her own singing career from this same title) had so little of her performances.
Finally, it seemed odd this film would want to skip over the arrest and apprehension of Selena's killer Yolanda Saldivar. Since there was so grand conspiracy ala JFK, viewers who do not neccessarily know what happened (or have honestly forgotten details since there was perpetrator confirmation from the moment which Selena had been murdered) are left hanging at this film's end. Yes, Selena's young death was a horrible tragedy, but assuring movie goers the criminal justice system had responded (so another person would not be shot by Saldivar) is also important.
Rating: Summary: Portrait of a superstar Review: Many know that Selena is my all-time favorite performer and this film is a beautiful (thought not thoroughly accurate) tribute of the slain Grammy-winning Tejano Queen. I don't usually enjoy Jennifer Lopez performances - acting OR vocal - but this being her first breakthrough role she does quite well; this 1997 film came out before her diva-esque image took over and she became a glitzy woman who won't tip bellhops after carrying up some 20-something bags.
Rating: Summary: amazing woman an amazing portrayal Review: I wasn't familar with the real Selena before this movie (I was a few months short of being 9 years old when she died) and my whole family is mainly white and all my parents listened to when I was growing up was country. But I saw this movie in 97 when it first came out and I loved this movie. I still love it now almost 18 but it does make me a little sad to think that she was just starting to rise up to the top and fufilling all her goals and then she was killed. I saw a taping of the real Selena in concert and it made me love this movie more when I saw how dead on they got to the outfits to the little hand moments when she was performing to just the whole presence. So dead on in fact, in a few scenes I doubt you could tell the difference between Jen and Selena. Being the first thing I had ever seen Jennifer Lopez in, it is still my favorite I think only she could pull it off I can't even imagine anyone coming close. I think if they didn't get Jen as Selena it wouldn't be convincing thus not being so popular. It's a great portrayal of a great artist and I recommend anyone watching it that hasn't. But if you have but don't own it, I recommend buying it.
