Rating: Summary: no more wire hangers ever Review: mommie dearest is one of the greatest perfomances of faye dunaways career. a superb actress who brings it all out in a 2 hour span. it's good to see the real truth behind some of the closed doors of early hollywood.
Rating: Summary: Delightfully Depraved Review: This movie is one of my favorites of all time. My cousin introduced me to it when i was young, and we still quote it and wet ourselves laughing.Fay does a job that borders on TOO fabulous (reason enough to buy it), but Joan is the real draw.If nothing else, buy it for the answering machine material possibilities.
Rating: Summary: "Why Can't You Give Me The RESPECT That I'm Entitled To?!!!" Review: This is definitely a guilty pleasure; watch it with the blinds shut. As good as Dunaway is, and she really does take a lot of risks here, the movie as a whole pretty much sabotages her performance; you get the feeling they edited or extended certain scenes just to make Dunaway look foolish. The movie takes place in a weird kind of Hollywood limbo; it supposed to be a biographical film but we never see Crawford at work (except for the title sequence) or with any other stars. What with the tiny cast, the cheapo sets (one scene actually recycles the kitchen set from "Happy Days") and almost no location shooting, it's very easy to imagine that most of the film's budget went to Dunaway's hair, makeup and wardobe which are pretty amazing in their authenticity. Dunaway really is the whole show. This is a textbook example of a movie subverted by its studio; either Paramount never believed in it and chose not to properly finance it or they purposely shaped it to be a camp disaster in hopes of getting some return on the prestige of Dunaway's name (the movie's original trailer makes a case for the latter scenario). Paramount embarrasses Dunaway pretty much the way Crawford's studios embarrassed her later in her career.
Rating: Summary: Great Acting ! Review: I really enjoyed this movie but it was kind of sad at the same time too. Faye Dunnaway portrayed the role of Joan Crawford so well! It made me feel real sorry for Christina Crawford. I would recommend seeing this movie.
Rating: Summary: This is an easy movie to review! Review: I can sum up my review of "Mommie Dearest" as follows: It is the most disturbing movie that you will ever see where you will laugh your a** off the entire time you're watching it!
Rating: Summary: great acting Review: let's not get into the subject of whether i believe or not what "christina dearest" is trying to make me believe- because the way she portrays herself doesn't make her look any better than Joan. The acting is absolutely superb; Faye dunaway is absolutely breath taking and this movie definitely is worth seeing.
Rating: Summary: "Don't eff with her fellas!" Review: When I originally saw this film in the theater, several people walked out obviously uncomfortable with the child-disciplining scenes. Oh, come on! Can you say "movie"? To give an accurate and concise portrayal of anyone's life in the span of 2 hours is simply impossible, however, this film does capture the feel of Christina Crawford's book, on which it was based. Faye Dunaway is superb in the role no other could have done justice to at the time. Oozing with all the camp that was indicative of Crawford's film heyday, Dunaway has the look and feel of Crawford throughout the entire film. Mommie Dearest is one of the best films of the 1980s!
Rating: Summary: Spectacular! Review: Faye Dunaway proves with her performance in this cult classic, that she's the greatest living actress! Told from adopted Christina Crawford's point of view, it's about her life with manic-depressive, obessive-compulsive, ego maniacal Joan Crawford, one of the greatest actresses of all time. Good performances from everyone, but watch it for the stunning and breath taking Faye Dunaway! END
Rating: Summary: Childcare and discipline - the Joan Crawford way. Review: Faye Dunaway really camps it up in this horrific and occasionally (unintentionally) hysterical account of the relationship between Joan Crawford and her adopted daughter Christina. Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Christina Crawford it destroys the carefully maintained illusion of perfection that her mother was eager to perpetuate during her lifetime. Faye Dunaway's performance is truly amazing. Whether she's frantically hacking down her rose bushes in the middle of the night after having been fired by MGM, or beating poor little blonde ringletted Christina (Mara Hobel) with a wire coat-hanger while ghoulishly smothered in white face cream, she pulls out all the stops to give us a most extreme display of drunken, sadistic cruelty and madness, although it is difficult not to laugh when she goes boss-eyed. It is ironic to think that before her death, Joan Crawford had actually indicated that if there were ever a film to be based on her life she would like to be played by Faye Dunaway. END
Rating: Summary: Watch the Movie but Read The Book Too! Review: No there is nothing funny about child abuse but unfortunately this movie came out as a very campy movie with unintentional humor and in fact Christina Crawford herself says that she hated this movie as they made it more into a comedy and the very serious issue of child abuse got sidetracked and I do agree with that but I actually kind of liked this movie but the book really is very unlike this movie and I think anyone who has watched this movie and hasn't read the book should do so and then see that book and movie are both good but different in every way. The acting in this movie was pretty good though it comes aross as highly campy especially from Fay Dunaway.
