Rating: Summary: Yes Mommie Dearest... Review: This is a great movie! I remember seeing it when I was very little. I was deliteded to see that Amazon.com sold it. It's about an actress Joan Crawford, that wants to adopt a baby. She gets rejected by the adoption agency, then seeks help of adopting through a friend. She gets the baby she wants, but turns out to be a horrible mother. You won't believe your eyes! This movie is a tear jerker.
Rating: Summary: Viewer Abuse! Review: I saw this movie years ago, but somebody was playing it the other night at a party for laughs, and I had forgotten how truly bad it was. I agree with the reviewer who said that both Christina's were badly cast. It's hard to sympathize with either. You spend half the movie with little Christina, thinking that Faye Dunaway would be perfectly justified in turning her over her knee and spanking the h-ll out of her. In fact, the pool scene, where she does spank her and throw her in the closest after her tantrum leaves you feeling like, "Good. The little snot deserved it." (That scene was depicted as abuse, but the truth is, many parents would have spanked in the same situation where she was openly defiant and refused to go to her room when she was told to go). The fact that Christina seems in many scenes to deliberately provoke her mother made it much more difficult to sympathize with her in the scenes when she did not. The "wire hanger" scene looked completely fake. It looked and sounded like she was smacking the hanger against a cardboard box. The fake tears & crying that barely matched up with each smack didn't make it anymore realistic. Then you spend the second half of the movie with grown up Christina thinking that Faye Dunaway would be perfectly justified in cutting her out of the will and her life forever for having such an annoying voice and being so completely boring. (Although, Diana Scarwid's acting talents improved greatly in later years, as I have enjoyed watching her in many movies since then). Faye Dunaway was so overblown that it was scary--not sure I'd want to run into her in real life! There were also scenes that made me wonder about the accuracy of Christina Crawford's story. The scene wehre her mother kept slapping her and then jumped on top of her and was choking her (with a news reporter watching) made me wonder why that story didn't hit the front pages of every tabloid paper in the country. How could a reporter pass up something that "juicy." I think this movie could have been done well. The book itself was very touching. If they had included some "good" moments, as all families have, instead of simply taking you from one wild abuse scene to the next, it would have come across much more realistically and less humorously.
Rating: Summary: MOMMIE WE LOVE YOU WE HATE YOU Review: EVERYTIME THIS MOVIE COME ON I WATCH IT ! "NO WIRE HANGERS" RINGS IN MY HEAD EVERYTIME I OPEN MY CLOSET ! FAYE DUNAWAY IS SIMPLY WONDERFUL ! IT MAKES YOU THANK GOD EVERY DAY NOT TO HAVE A JOAN CRAWFORD KIND OF MOM ! MONEY & FAME DOES NOT NECESSARILY MAKE YOU A GOOD PERSON ; DEFINATLY NOT A GOOD PARENT !
Rating: Summary: I Love You Mommie Dearest Review: The ultimate cult classic. Sit back and root for wire hangers, axes, bearing walls, and Mommie, while you boo and hiss Christina, "the bad seed". Not to be missed!
Rating: Summary: A big disappointment full of painfully BAD acting! Review: This is an example of a book with great movie potential going horribly awry! Christina Crawford's autobiograhical bestseller about her Hollywood upbringing at the hands of her alcoholic, moviestar 'Mommie' Joan Crawford, was powerful, enfuriating, and heartbreaking. The movie, unfortunately, is just a mish-mash of overblown acting and there is little continuity between the scenes. I nearly walked out on this movie when I first saw it, and it's not much better on the small screen! The period sets, costumes, and Faye Dunaway's makeup are right, but the tone of the film is way off! Both the Christinas were horribly cast, and I had no sympathy for either one. Diana Scarwid's acting is downright embarrassing (since when did Christina have a Southern accent?)! It's really sad that the original message about child-abuse is lost in this ridiculous, campy trash.
Rating: Summary: It's a sword.....cuts both ways..... Review: The most awesome movie of all time. It's incredible from beginning to end. I've seen it close to 100 times, and can lip synch absolutely every scene in my sleep. The planets and stars lined up on this one.
Rating: Summary: A good film showing actual events Review: This film is based on actual events. It shows that all movie stars so NOT have a prefact life and family. Many stars hit their kids and drank a lot. This movie accurately shows the situation between the mother and Tena. It lost one star because at times the film seemed to drag on. Overall, I would recommend this movie.
Rating: Summary: GUILTY PLEASURE Review: Oh, but how much pleasure this absurd movie has brought to my life! I have wept in tears of laughter with friends constantly since 1982, when I watched the movie in the theatre in shock disbelief -- then, I was even somewhat disturbed. But taking this unbelievable mess of a wreck on its own deluded terms (what is it? a comedy? a drama? a freak show?) it is immensely enjoyable and camp heaven. Faye Dunaway is so monstrously working in this movie that she gets under your skin, and, forgive me, but I thought Diana Scarwid was a rare treat in this film -- she commands your attention with her bizarre and idiotic line readings. There is not one sequence in this film that does not inspire me to laugh, but among my faves are the swimming contest and older-Christina's acting moments and moments at the convent -- "sister these years have been harrrddd" -- Of course repeated viewings -- which I recommend with reservation, since it becomes creepily addictive -- inspire lunacy in the viewer, so I say: GO FOR IT!
Rating: Summary: Do you think it's clean? Do you? Review: Of course! It's good clean fun. It's the best comedy of a drama ever filmed. Faye Dunaway IS Joan Crawford! She's got the look, baby! Don't you dare say she's UNSUITABLE! I AM definitely one of her fans! Diana Scarwid is a little weak but she did know where to find the booze and the boys in the film so you must give her points for that. Buy this movie and watch it often. If you have children, I suggest you play it for them each and every Mother's Day. Now stop reading and go buy it and always remember, "no wire hangers...everrrrrrrrrrr! "
