Summary: In the Bedroom
Review: Im not a sophisticated movie reviewer. I just am an ordinary film watcher. I love movies and good acting. I have never witnessed a film that had any better acting by everyone than this film has. Spacek and Wilkinson and Tomei were outstanding The photograpy was absolutely beautiful. If for no other reason than descibed above this movie has to be watched.

Summary: A moving and heartbreaking film
Review: I think this is easily one of the best films of the year. As I left the theater, I was really surprised to hear so many people grumbling about how much they disliked the film. I don't know what they were expecting, but to me the movie was unbelievably powerful and poignant.

All of the performances were terrific - I really felt for Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek, who were grieving the murder of their son. Marisa Tomei and Nick Stahl gave wonderfully nuanced performances as well. Todd Field's direction is a remarkable example of how the film medium can be used to convey intense emotions with a minimum of dialogue...

I love subtle, understated character studies. In that regard, this movie ranked right up there with the best I have seen.

Summary: Powerful
Review: One of the best things about In the Bedroom's beginning segment, is that it gives you no sense of direction. It shows two lovers (Nick Stahl and Marisa Tomei) running through a field, laughing and giggling. It's a cliche. A well thought out and used cliche at that. Yes, these two are in love. We weren't dragged through the sappy story about how they met. We weren't bombarded with "getting to know you" silly banter. Our job is to see what's next. Director Todd Field tells us, in one of the most original, and shocking ways I've yet to have seen.
I would be doing a great disservice to tell people who haven't seen this film what occurs within the next two hours, so I can simply say that I was shocked, numbed, cried, and laughed, all without feeling the slightest bit manipulated. Camden is the small town in New England where our story is set. We are given plenty of room to breath while we watch the character's lives unfold in what would seem like a cramped town. A town in which you run into the same people every day....but would you want to? Two of these people who live in this town are Mr. and Mrs. Fowler (Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek). Two roles that these fine actors were born to play. As events, tragic or otherwise, unfold, both of these characters absorb things like real human beings might. I know, this is an unpopular way to act in most mainstream films but, this isn't a mainstream movie, and if realism isn't what you're after, than I suggest you pick another film at your local cineplex. OK, for those of you who are still with me, I'll take you a little further. I have seen this film twice, which is something lately that I rarely do, since first impressions are typically the truest. As it turns out, I was so wrapped up in the story the first time I saw it, I realized that I didn't pay enough attention to the details. Tomei, Wilkinson, and Spacek did such an incredible job with their acting, that I forgot that they were acting. Seeing it upon the second viewing, I was very tense for the first half hour of the film. I was locked in my seat, and trying to notice all the scenery, the camera angles (and its occasional shakiness), and listen to the writing. I found myself still getting completely wrapped up in the story and eventually forgetting to notice the details once again. I was bracing myself for what was to come.
Is this film a great film? Yes, you will be catapulted through a roller coaster of emotions. Is this an easy film to watch? No, but if you see it through, you will find an atonement for the time you spent watching. This film doesn't tell you how or what to feel, it just shows you what a few people in a small fishing town did. It's as simple as that. What they did, however, is not simple. So, if you don't like this film, I highly suggest Shrek or Monster's Inc.........or a film with a big music score, and lots of good-looking actors. If you do like this film, you can count it up to another great achievement in filmmaking, and feel all the more richer.

Summary: Too Loooooooong!
Review: Although Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson were very good in this movie, it was too long and very slow moving. The actor who played Marisa Tomei's husband was stiff and not particularly believeable in the role. And again, too many pregnant pauses in the film.

Summary: A true-to-life, disturbing movie
Review: Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson are parents dealing with the death of their only child, and each is outstanding. Marisa Tomei and Nick Stahl do the best they can with their limited characters. This is a slow, realistic movie which requires you to think---there are no pat and easy answers here. But the most impressive performance in my opinion was William Mapother's as the abusive and murderous husband. A cousin to Tom Cruise, Mapother bears a strong resemblance to Tom in looks as well as acting ability. It would have been very easy to make a one-note performance out of his character, but Mapother doesn't. I hope to see more of this actor.

Summary: A powerful and flawed film
Review: In the Bedroom is a film that is drastically different from a typical drama. The events that transpire in the plot aren't necessarily different, it's the way the characters are developed and the situations they are put in. The director, Todd Field is obviously more interested in the aftermath of the events in the characters lives, not the actual events themselves. That makes this film very interesting and different, usually a set-piece is unleashed on an audience in a stock Hollywood drama, no such thing here. The acting is all stellar, not one misstep is present. Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei are the standouts. It's a very slow movie, all the critics can say what they want, it is a slowly paced movie. I don't mean slow in a bad way, it's not boring, it's just that the characters engage in long conversations. There isn't much action in the traditional sense, the action is in the words. That said there are flaws. I find the flaws with the editing and sequencing, some sequences were obviously moved around from where they were originally in the script and I found it very noticable. Also the ending is distinctally unsatisfying, some may say the events make the ending inevitable, but I still find it a little hard to swallow, I saw no prior motivation for the ending. The characters just kind of exploded. That said, it is very powerful, extremely well-acted and ultimately worth-seeing for these traits if nothing else. Just be prepared for an absorbing, very slow character driven film.

Summary: In the Bedroom
Review: I thought that the movie moved VERY slowly. The storyline was predictable and drawn out much longer than it needed to be. Many of the scenes seems unnecessary. It was chopped up a lot. The abrupt ending made you leave wondering why there wasn't something more to it. Throughout the movie, we kept waiting for something more to happen. The acting in it was good, but not anything out of the ordinary for the gifted performers in these roles. VERY disappointing!

Summary: A poignant rhapsody of loss and angst
Review: Frank Fowler (Nick Stahl) returns to hometown Maine for a brief summer stint as a lobsterman and is attracted to a local single mother Natalie (Marisa Tomei), but unexpected entanglements prevails in the form of her abusive, violent ex-husband. In a confrontation, Frank is tragically shot by him. Matt (Tom Wilkinson) and Ruth (Sissy Spacek) find themselves grieving silently for their lost son when the court decides to let the culprit on bail. When Matt finds himself unable to control his angst, he plans a revenge to appease his outrage.

Adapted from Andre Dubus's story KILLING, IN THE BEDROOM is a simple tale that conveys undercurrents of grief and loss poignantly especially with Sissy Spacek's explosive turn as the mourning mother and Tom Wilkinson's elegant performance. IN THE BEDROOM is dark and slow-moving without any particular climax, but the characters are developed to their fullest. Marisa Tomei puts in a sterling performance as the confused Natalie whose vulnerability is heart-rendering. The story progresses with accusations between the couple, the falling apart of their marriage and the eventual killing of the murderer. No frills or style, Todd Field prudently sets the camera to capture the ensemble's seasoned acting. Some genuine moments are heartfelt especially the scene at the game of cards and where Matt's noisy lawnmower contrasts brilliantly with Ruth's silence. IN THE BEDROOM is unpretentious and honest as a movie on a rhapsody of loss - sometimes silence resonate feelings louder than words.
