Summary: ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER
Review: This is one of the greatest movies ever. I consider it to be a part of the "Holy Trinity" if you will of Scorsese movies (with Taxi Driver and Goodfellas completed the trio). It has what may be De Niro's best performance ever (it is hard to decide between this and Taxi Driver). The scene where Joey(Pesci) is going to his car and Jake(De Niro) practically begs him to forgive him particularly struck me as brilliant acting. It also has superb directing, cinematography, and dialogue. In fact, when it isn't a fight scene, this movie is all about great dialogue and interaction between the characters. Joe Pesci is great as De Niro's brother, and Cathy Moriarty is great as his wife.
In case you haven't seen it this film is about the rise and fall of Jake La Motta a prize fighter from the forties who is extremely paranoid. He constantly is thinking that his wife is cheating on him, and even goes so far as to accuse his brother of having an affair with her("Joey, did you f**k my wife?" "What kind of a question is that? I won't answer it. It's a stupid question and I won't answer it."). I am not really sure whether she actually did ever cheat on him but she does say that she did, but I think that that is just to ... off Jake or something. Anyway, you can decide for yourself.
For like the first 15 minutes, I thought that this movie was going to ... because the black and white picture looked crappy but I think that that is because I was watching an old VHS copy that I had rented from Blockbuster, but anyway I got used to it and I'm sure that the DVD version looks great. I am going to buy this on DVD as soon as I get some money(I'm only 16 so money is kinda tight), because I just bought the wonderful Godfather DVD Collection which you also might want to take a look at if you are interested in this movie because it is also right up their with Scorsese's Holy Trinity.

Summary: A very good, overrated film
Review: Solid film, especially the cinematography. However, the incessant use of profanity was unneccessary and becomes extremely annoying. Also, the film is an obvious rip-off of Felini's La Strada. Coincidentally, La Strada is a vastly superior film and one of the best and most influential movies of all time.

Summary: The Best Film of The Decade!!
Review: De Niro turns in an extarodanary, best actor oscar- winning performance as Jake La Motta, a boxer whose pscylogical ans sexual complexities erupt into violence both in and out of the ring. Nominated for best supporting ator and actress oscars. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are compelling as the brother who falls to Jake's mounting paranoina and jelousy, and the fifteen-year-old girl who becomes his most prized trophy. Tough, compelling, and powerful made; Raging Bull strikes hard, fast...and striaght to the heart.

Summary: A Great Film That Deserves a Better DVD.
Review: The Film: First of all, I loved 'Raging Bull'. It is a great story about a man who had everything and lost it all. The film is about Jake LaMotta, a boxer who can take a beating in the ring and win with it. But outside the ring, he has even worse beatings. They are all aflicted by himself. He has uncontrollable outbreaks of violence, a fear of infedelity and a never-ending urge to prove himself right. He abuses his wife, attacks his brother, and the whole time destroying himself. Robert De Niro did this roll so well. He became the part. He trained in boxing to get in shape and learn the part and even won two of the three matches he was in. Then he put on 50lbs for the latter part of the movie, Jake's decline. The film is such a great one with the most spectacular fight scenes ever seen.

The DVD: This DVD is really disappointing. It has hardly any extra features. It comes with a trailer and the movie. Plus, the movie gives you the option of widescreen and pan and scan. Aren't DVD's all about being able to watch the film in widescreen, the way the director intended it to be? I'm sure Martin Scorsese never wanted it to be shown in pan and scan, even if it was only 1:85:1. I think the DVD should at least have put in a documentary or maybe put the 8-page booklet on the DVD. If you want a good Scorsese DVD, check out 'Taxi Driver-SE' or 'Cape Fear'. Wait, and pray that they come out with a 'Raging Bull- Special Edition' DVD.

Summary: Blood On The Ropes!
Review: Making a film like "Raging Bull" in the era of "Rocky," was a gutsy and perverse thing to do.

I can't think of another director but Martin Scorsese who could have pulled it off (well, almost...the film was a commercial failure.)

Shot in stark black and white to re create the in your face tabloid look of the 40's and 50's, Scorcese, with a tour de force De Niro performance made a film which, like its protagonist, is both repellant and fascinating.

Scorsese's genius for recreating the look and feel of an era is all over "Raging Bull" from the local neighborhood swimming pool to the mob social halls to the seedy night clubs..no other director seems to have this kind of eye for detail.

The supporting performances are magnificent: Joe Pesci's Joey is one of the great supporting performances of ANY decade...Cathy Moriarty as Vicki is sensational...her Bronx nasal twang always seems at odds with her stark blonde beauty.

"Raging Bull" is undoubtedtly brilliant filmmaking, but it leaves you feeling hollow...the truth is a lot of talented poeple made a fantastic film about a guy whose one attribute in life was that he could take a beating.

In many way "Raging Bull" is like Jake La Motta's comment about his overcooked steak: "it defeats its own purpose." ********* The DVD issue leaves a lot to be desired...the black and white transfer is crisp and clear, but there are NO special features to speak of....no making of documentary, no interviews with cast and crew....the commentary Scorsese did for the laserdisc version is also missing.

How about it MGM/UA??

A film of this stature deserves a Special Edition reissue which includes more than just a skimpy little booklet.

Summary: De Niro as La Motta
Review: Robert De Niro stars in this extremely compelling look at the 1940's greatest boxer, and middle weight champion Jake La Motta. A man that had a bigger enemy outside the ring than in it, which was of course, himself. De Niro puts on an amazing performance, (not sparing the bad language, but it adds flavor)giving you an extremely effective look at life in the U.S in the Bronx during the 1940's and 50's. The film also goes over some of La Motta's most famous fights with Sugar Ray Robinson, his arch-rival in the ring. All in all, an amazing film, that won two academy awards, see it.

Summary: Robert De Niro Is One Mean S.O.B.
Review: This film is awesome. Not only is it awesome because Robert De Niro is in it. But because it also stars Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty and is directed by Martin Scorsese.

I like Joe Pesci's reaction when Robert De Niro asks him questions about his wife. You could tell he's lying by just looking at him.

I can't guarantee to you that you'll like this film, because I found it to be a little boring too, but if you like De Niro films, this is a good one to see.

Summary: Favorite American Movie of all time
Review: Don't need to write too much to praise this film, cos everybody else on this site has done so. Just wanna say this movie is about humanity at its truest and most sincere. Anyone that knows about filmmaking could tell you Raging Bull is technically masterful; but it is the story and character that stay with you. Scorsese and De niro told the story with such urgency and intimacy that it makes a viewer unable to remain detached from its emotion.

Summary: Awesome
Review: This is De Niro at his best in his best movie. The imagery is great and the acting is spectacular. Scorses is a master.
