Summary: The best film of the 80's
Review: Standing as Martin Scorsese's best movie yet, Raging Bull really is the greatest 80's movie of all time. I don't blame AFI for placing this #24 on the 100 movies list. Robert De Niro's portrayal of boxer Jake La Motta was an oscar-calibur performance, and boasts some of the best cinematography ever in movie history, using dynamic camera angles, slow motion, freeze frames, and a black and white picture. Truly a landmark in 80's film making.

Summary: Perfect... for what it tries to do
Review: This film is absolutely fantastic. DeNiro and Pesci are great and Scorcese succeeds in everything he attempts to do. It is one of the greatest character studies of all time... but that is all it is, a phenomenal character study. No matter how much you may love this movie, it is absurd to say it is the best film of all time as many reviewers here have (that is ofcourse except for the jackass who wrote a completely negative review while giving it a five star heading). Also, there is no need to put down the Deer Hunter, as a review below does, it is one of the few films of the seventies and maybe even ever to be superior to Raging Bull, in my opinion. It may have a few more flaws and may have not been as obviously brilliantly directed and executed all around, but it deals with greater concepts and ideas of war and the people involved. This ofcourse brings me back to my original point that a character study of one figure, no matter how brilliant, has definate limitations on its level of greatness in film over all.

Summary: Overrated, hyped "classic" is actually slow and uneven.
Review: Poor sound quality in outdoor dialogue scenes, slow pace. This movie is for De Niro and Scorcese groupies who'll mindlessly swallow anything they ejaculate. The laboured 'setting of the mood' for every scene outside the ring will bore you, believe me. This early Scorcese film does not compare favourably to his later films Goodfellas and Casino. Don't waste your time.

Summary: Best Film of All Time?
Review: Quite possibly. Robert De Niro gives the greatest single performance I've ever seen. People use the word "gritty" too much but that's what this is. It is a powerful movie but at the same time subtle and charming. The cinematography is absolutely brilliant (boxing scenes) and the dialogue is pitch-perfect. I'd love to see Joe Pesci and De Niro in a Shakespeare film. Why? I don't friggin know.

Summary: The masterpiece that closed the 1970's
Review: Raging Bull is one of several masterpieces released between late 1979 and late 1980 that closed the 1970's, perhaps the greatest decade of films ever. Raging Bull was released in the same 12-month peoiod as The Shining, Atlantic City, The Tin Drum, Apocalypse Now, and Being There. Some people would throw in The Empire Strikes Back as well. While mainstream Hollywood was raving about Kramer vs. Kramer, The Deer Hunter, and Ordinary People (which won the Oscar in 1980), the more intelligent, urban Americans were going for the above-mentioned classics. And where are the fans of Ordinary People, Kramer vs. Kramer, and The Deer Hunter today? In the minority, thank goodness.Every decade has brought a masterpiece for Scorsese. In the 1970's it was Raging Bull. In the 1980's it was The Last Temptation, and in the 1990's, it was Goodfellas. This film will forever remain as one of the greatest American films ever. Drawing inspiration from Shakespeare's work and "On the Waterfront," this is a movie to cherish for a lifetime.

Review: Poor Jake . You actually fell sorry the man who mistrerats everyone who helped him . Robert de Niro again is so convincing that he makes something unacceptable to be a strong , amazing performance . How can this not have won best picture or best director ?
