Summary: It'll stay gold
Review: What can I say about this movie? For starters, it was sad. Extremely. I've seen it three times since renting it three days ago, and I haven't made it through the last scene without bawling yet. Normally I don't like sad movies, but this one had a catch-it was powerful. Pony and his friends, to me, aren't greasers. They're simply wonderful, wonderful down-on-their-luck boys who haven't been given a chance to show how wonderful they are. In fact, I don't think any of them, especially Johnny, even realize how wonderful they are. If you don't like this movie, then you don't know a masterpiece when you see one. I can't believe five stars is as high as you can go. This movie deserves WAY, WAY, WAY more!
Another thing I liked about it? It followed the book. Pony didn't get jumped by the Socs in the beginning, and Soda didn't run out while Pony and Darry were fighting in the end, but other than that, it was no different from the book. All the lines were almost word for word.
It couldn't have had a better cast. Matt Dillon played Dally to perfection, Ralph Macchio was exactly how I pictured Johnny, Emilio Estevez had Two-Bit nailed down, Patrick Swayze was an awesome Darry, Rob Lowe was wonderful as Sodapop, Tom Cruise was great as Steve, and C. Thomas Howell-well, let's just say no one else could've pulled off Ponyboy. Even the Socs had it down pat. Matt, Ralph, Emilio, Patrick, Rob, Tom, Diane, C. Thomas, and everyone else, if you ever read this-THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS MOVIE! NO ONE ELSE COULD'VE DONE IT LIKE Y'ALL. YOU REALLY TOUCHED MY HEART! AND S.E. HINTON, THANK YOU FOR CREATING THIS! :)
There's really no word in the English language that can describe how wonderful this movie-or book-is. Even seeing it for the first time twenty years after it was released, all the magic was there. STAY GOLD!

Review: The movie: THE OUTSIDERS is a wonderful movie! Not to mention a fantastic book! I've seen the movie 4 times, so I think that gives you an indication of how good it is! I read the book about 2 or 3 weeks ago and not long ago I saw the movie! It was amazing how the movie was almost exactly like the book! I know almost everything about The Outsiders! Key word: Almost! I know practicly all the words from the movie, and I know all of Johnny's Letter to Ponyboy.

Summary: SOME PEOPLE MISS THE POINT ENTIRELY
Review: Wow, what a scathing review I just read of this terrific movie! Although I will agree that "The Outsiders" is sometimes sappy, it is overall an excellent movie which stands on its own with or without S.E. Hinton's novel. Yes, the Stevie Wonder song does make it a little too Lifetime-y, but other than that, it's pretty darn perfect as far as film adaptations go. Coppola is a masterful director, and this film is no exception. The cinematography is glorious. Look at how the night scenes are filmed; the lighting is fantastic! The use of the song "Gloria" is another one of Coppola's techniques that make the movie work. Call it Lifetime for guys, call it sappy, but you can't call it crap because you can't appreciate it. The cast, although a who's who of teen actors from that time, have by and large gone on to bigger and better things since this movie was released.

Summary: A favorite of teenage girls
Review: It is not surprising to discover that most of the five star reviews here were written by females. (And I strongly suspect that most of them are teenagers.) Afterall, this movie was aimed at pleasing teenage girls. Doubt me? Just look at the cast! It's a virtual who's who of "non-threatening boy" actors of the early 80's: C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, and even Leif Garrett makes an appearance. The question I have is how did S.E. Hinton's tough novel about the lives of teenage boys from the wrong side of the tracks in early 1960's Oklahoma end up as I heard one commentator recently state as "a Lifetime movie with guys."

This is as sappy and as maudlin a movie that one will find on that network for women. (In fact, I do believe "The Outsiders" is often shown on Lifetime.) One knows one is in trouble from the opening credits with the bombastic "Gone with the Wind" style title and that treacly Stevie Wonder song. It gets worse as one is introduced to supposedly "tough" characters played by guys almost as pretty as the female lead, Diane Lane. Also, an annoyingly silly and precocious soundtrack plays throughout the movie.

How did S.E. Hinton's great novel end up as nothing more than a two hour advertisement for Teen Beat magazine? Did director Francis Ford Coppola upon learning that Hinton is actually a woman decide to gear the movie for young females in the belief that this was the audience she was wrote the novel for? The movie follows the book's plot fairly well, but it's the tone of the movie in following that plot that completley misses the mark. It's sappy when it's supposed to be poignant. It's cloying when it's trying to make a point. It's over-the-top when it's supposed to be dramatic. Hinton's novel deserved much better treatment than this two hour parade of teenage girl pinups!

Summary: LOVED IT!!!!!!!!
Review: I LOVED this movie so much. I had to read the book also for a book report book and one of the questions was, "Would you request this book to someone else"? My answer was heck yea. The book was awesome and so was the movie. The part that I love about both of them is that there isn't a boring moment everything's great! It really is sad though in some parts, but it is still nonetheless one of THE BEST BOOKS that you will ever read. It had such an impact on me in a possitive way. I think everyone should read this book. It's one of the best ones out there.

Summary: It rocked!
Review: I've seen this movie like a bazillion times. It's that good. The acting is great. I loved the actors who played in it. They couldn't have gotten a better cast. Rent this movie, buy this movie, whatever. Just see it. Pay close attention to it too. If you pay attention you'll get the meaning of the movie. Also DO NOT look on some websites and cheat to see what happens, or watch the ending of the movie. You will regret so much. So go rent it right now. Also don't forget the tissue box. You're gonna need it.
