Rating: Summary: Love it, Love it, Loooooooove it! (DVD please!) Review: I really enjoyed this movie, The story was great, the acting was very good and the music was wonderful it really had that 60's motown sound! I was in a band (early 90's) and even though the times were different the problems of keeping a band together was still the same. It was very real from hearing your song on the radio for the first time to ego's and all the things in between.Where? When? will there be a DVD?! DVD! Hey about a DVD release?!
Rating: Summary: A Classic Review: I am probably one of the biggest fans of the motown sound and this video is probably one of my all time favorites. I have watched this movie at least 100 times and I still love it! I think that Robert Townsend did a fabulous job on this movie. I am just sad that it does not get the recognition that it deserves. This movie will make you laugh and cry. The Five Heartbeats was an excellent look at the rise and fall of a singing group in the musical industry. My only request is how can I get this movie on DVD? I feel that my movie collection will not be complete without it.
Rating: Summary: Near Great Review: This is a fine movie about the rise, and fall, of some of the super black rock groups in the 60s and 70s. It also shows, but kind of over-simplifies (I hope) how the white, squeaky clean groups covered a lot of the material and made out with big bucks. I will always remember one of the early scenes where Michael Wright's character Eddie, the lead singer of the Heartbeats, barely escapes a violent card game and comes running and sliding on stage to join the Heartbeats in an on-stage competition. But there could have been a lot more music and a little less sub-plot ---sex, racist Southern cops, etc. And the final scene----why on earth couldn't the movie show the members actually singing once again when they got together? But it is a great effort and you will enjoy it. I love the music so, that I wanted this movie to tell it all. But it told a lot.
Rating: Summary: An Exceptional Movie Review: This is the absolute best movie that I have ever seen. I am looking forward to the DVD. The movie touched on every emotion, demonstrated the true meaning of friend, and the power of the Church. The acting was great and the music was outstanding. This is a must see family movie.
Rating: Summary: A great movie! Review: Everyone in this movie was great! After all of his HBO Partners In Crime specials, Robert Townsend continued the good work with this wonderful film. Tico Wells, Harry Lennix, and Townsend himself all turned in fine performances but you have to love Michael Wright in this one. His "Eddie" was heartbreaking and believable! If you're a fan of films about music groups making it to the top, you have got to see this one! A gem!
Rating: Summary: The Five Heart beats, you will have to watch it again and ag Review: The five heartbeats is the best movie I have ever seen. Its funny, full of good soul music and depicts a realistic view of black culture. I enjoyed the acting, the singing and the story line.
Rating: Summary: Tha' Bomb Review: If you love the "journey to stardom" of such groups as the Temptations, you'll love this movie. With a variety of music ranging from "Doo-Wop" to "Gospel", this flick will keep your head boppin' and fingers snappin'. And for the sensitive people, the story line will definitely shed a few tears. I could only wish the public could archive this movie in DVD format soon.
Rating: Summary: A classic up their with Cooly High,Cladine,Sparkle,Car Wash Review: I can remember when I first seen it from beginning to the end my mouth was open this and the color purple were the only movies that made me laff, cry, sad, than very happy all in two hours and also send chills up my spine like when they were doing the talent show and they took over and then eddie was blowing and ask the crowd is their a heart in the house tonight stand up 'I stood up and said yes over here" and started to stomp my feet and clap my hands like I was at a concert. Now that didn't really happen but I wanted to,that's the kind of movie it is. It was a very good movie. If you love the motown sound and want a little history on what price black act's had to pay for stardom then here is a little history for those who like a good movie with alot of good music, and a lot of spirt you will love this movie.

Rating: Summary: The Dells or the Temptations? Review: An excellent representation of the music industry. The director was successful in an authentic portrayal facts (...notice the original Marvin Gay poster on Townsend's wall) in the context of a time and place. The video was enjoyable, entertaining, and enlighting. Mercifully, it was not ladden with extraneous material, but rather it is an accurate, focused depiction of a slice of the world at the time. In the spirit of 'Where did our Love Go', 'Sparkle' and '#1 with a Bullet', the video does not sanitize the world, but reports on it. To those who simply enjoyed the music of the '70's or those who fashion themselves as pop music historians, or those in between, the video will be equally enjoyable and statisfying. Now, were the Five HeartBeats the Temptations or the Dells?
