Rating: Summary: All star cast wasted in predictable love story Review: This movie might have been more interesting if it had explored some of the other characters. For instance, why is Diane Keaton so overly protetcive of her daughter? What about Danny's parents? Considering that the movie is 130 minutes long, it hits you over the head in establishing each point. Could have been tightened up to 90-100 minutes and been more effective.Highly predictable story of mentally challenged woman seeking her independence and finding love. Get Benny and Joon instead.
Rating: Summary: All star cast wasted in predictable, cliche ridden story Review: Excruciatingly long movie (130 mins) is very predictable and cliche ridden about mentally handicapped woman who seeks independence and finds love. All star cast is wasted in this movie. Get Benny and Joon instead.
Rating: Summary: BETTER THAN A COFFEE Review: well, i just finished watching this film at 5.30am in the UK, and i can't believe what i have just seen. I watched this film on one of the sky channels, and have to say normally it's just time filling rubbish at this time in the morning, but WOW. This film is brilliant, so much so that i immediately visited amazon to order a copy (sadly not available in the UK). Not being a very sentimental type, this film had me both laughing and weeping, almost at the same time. Being disillusioned lately with up and coming film, i loved this to bits, and i can only say that the acting was superb and the story memorable, i just can't wait to see it again. So for all those die hard die hard fans, give this film a chance, you'll love it.
Rating: Summary: Disappointment Review: Even though this movie is star packed, we all know that doesn't necessarly lead to a good movie. The other sister is the PERFECT example of this. This movie is NOT sweet or what ever the other reviews say. I was uncomfortable watching an oscar-nominated actress(lewis) try to swindle another nomination out of this swamp of a movie? And the other fabulious actors doint here? Never rent this, I am glad I never paid money for this movie, instead I only lost 2 hours watchin cable. Watch 'Cape Fear' for Juliette Lewis in here best, Annie Hall for Dianne Keaton in her prime, and 'Gone in 60 seconds" for ribbsi at his best. Rent anything else with these all fine actors in it EXCEPT this.
Rating: Summary: Exceptional Review: The Other Sister is a delightful movie. It is heartbreaking in parts, but also heartwarming. Who can say that these are not real problems that one or two mentally challenged people would face? Carla comes from a rich family... so, yes, she would have very different issues than Daniel would! Just as there are millions of different people in the world, there will be a million different lives to live ... that means each person has their own sets of problems. This movie is fun, funny, sweet, sad and loveable. I watch it over and over and many of my friends and family have watched it and most have enjoyed it as well. All the actors and actresses in this movie did a great job and made the movie believable and bittersweet. Add in a great soundtrack and you have an exceptional movie!
Rating: Summary: Heart Warming Review: I absolutely love this movie. It's reassuring to know that love is out there for everyone. For me, it's just nice to know that there are movies out there that aren't filled up with nasty images and ear piercing language. So what if a some people went back a second time and "found" things to be uncharacteristic of "retarded people." If you love/loved it the first that you see/saw it, that should be all that matters. If you search for things that are wrong then you will find them. Not everything needs to be criticized or torn apart. My bottom line is this, I love this story with out a doubt. It has quickly become one of my favorite movies. Even though I may not be mentally disabled, I still know all about having parents who just can't let go and about trying to find that perfect someone. The Other Sister is truly a divine love story, which also serves as a good reminder of how each and every person on this earth has feelings and how we should treat one another. If Everyone could be as Forgiving and loving as Carla and Danny, then maybe divorces wouldn't exist! I would suggest this movie to everyone.
Rating: Summary: fantastic Review: so what if the story is silly and juliette lewis is unconvincing - ribisi more than makes up for it - he plays one of the most convincing dd people i've seen on film so far - great movie
Rating: Summary: This is a movie about a FAMILY Review: A lot of issues are dealt with in this movie - falling in love for the firt time, cutting the apron strings, getting along in a world which can sometimes be cruel. These are things that most people have to face in life, the difference being that Carla has more obstacles than most of us, and this story is really about how she handles those obstacles and refuses to allow them to overcome. She is a powerful woman, with some hindrances, yes, but all powerful people have SOME hindrances, don't they? She manages to make her way and retain her wonderful view on life, and inspire others despite the obstacles in her life. She is DIFFERENT - but I wouldn't necessarily say she is "handicapped". I grew to love her family in this film. None of Carla's family members are perfect, but they all love her. I found this pretty realistic. Ribisi's acting was, once again, superb, and Ribisi and Lewis were great together. I'd love to see as romantic interests in other films.
Rating: Summary: I give credit only to Keaton and Ribisi Review: When I saw this movie for the first time I thought it was expectionally good. When I watched it for the second and third times I began to notice things I hadn't seen in the first time. I thought Lewis pulled off a superb performance as a retarded woman, but it turns out Ribisi deserves the credit for portraying a real retarded man. Lewis might have looked like a real retarded person, but her physical traits are too subtle to pass it off. Ribisi's stuttering, repeating moves and dialogue, eye-darting, and hand movements are those of a retarded person. Of course, it isn't to a tee, but it is much more convincing than Lewis's. Another thing that bothered me is that the problems they encounter during the movie is not problems of the retarded. The retarded face more problems than these two. Danny's alcohol problem and his father is more realistic than Carla'sproblems. The only problem she has is with her mother, and even if that was a big problem, it should have been more realistic. Like the scene when Danny tells the people he and Carla had sex over thanksgiving- where was Carla's parents' reaction to that? There were only the argument between Carla and Danny. If Carla's mother had been so adamant against Danny dating Carla, perhaps the script should have called for a big argument between them related to that, with the loss of virginity, not the one in the wedding. I acclaim Diane Keaton for her brilliant performance- she's the only one that brings life to this movie. Ribisi is not bad either. But Keaton, as usual, stole the show. I guess she can't help it- only expectional, extraordinary actresses are born with talents like hers. But overall, the Good Sister is a very good movie- it delivers funny lines, can make you think. But for me, the relationship between Carla and Danny didn't make me think-- it was much too superficial. It was with Carla's mother's reactions and actions that make you think, along with the gay sister. Not a movie to miss.
Rating: Summary: Juilette Lewis was a great actress Review: I think that juliette lewis is a very good actress in this. but her boyfriend was not. he kind of messed up the movie with his bad acting and interupting things. all though I love anything diane keaton does. she is a fabulous actress. this movie had a pretty good cast.
