Summary: Patch Work
Review: Jerry Goldsmith is without question, one of the best film score composers, who ever worked in Hollywood. Along with fellow composer John Williams, these two men revolutionized the film music industry, so that the movie underscore was elevated in stature and public consciousness. Since Goldsmith's death in July of 2004, it's hard for me to imagine that there will not be another film made featuring his masterful touch. My soundtrack collection already contains many of his works...But it is still not as complete as I would like it to be, as far as Goldsmith is concerned. His score for the 1965 film, A Patch Of Blue is one that I have wanted for quite some time now.
Goldsmith's score is intimate, playful, and yes romantic and captures the escence of a movie with social implications at the time of its release. The main theme makes wonderful use of the piano and then teams it up with snipets of the harmonica for an interesting sound. Like the film itself, the score didn't need anything big about it, as explores the relationship of the characters. The only cue that is dated really is "Just The Radio" blares out a bit the 60's sound as Salina readies for an uncertain evening out. Towards the end of the score, as events in the film take a more dramatic turn, Goldsmith takes the music right along with it.
Those used to hearing the composer's epic qualities shine in films like Star Trek, The Omen, Planet Of The Apes, Tora Tora Tora, and Patton may be a bit surprised by the score and how it plays. Don't worry it still very much in keeping with his body of work. Subtle is the order of the day here. Album producer Douglass Fake provides liner notes on the film and the score, complete with cue analysis and notes on the release itself. The CD has 19 tracks and a running time of 31:46. Highly recommended for Goldsmith collectors.

Summary: Blue Movie
Review: My year Ten class had to read and study this book, and I just loved it. When I found the movie starred the gorgeous Sidney Poitier, I was very excited.It is a great, great movie. It is quite slow-moving, but that only means it captures the emotions and intensity of the book brilliantly. (Not to mention the actors had some part in pulling this off!) Poitier and the young blind girl have fantastic chemistry. Though the two lead totally different lifestyles, they both know what it's like to live in a lonely, heartless world. This story really illustrates what real love is about - loving someone for their soul, and doing what is best for that person no matter how difficult it may be for both of you. It is cute but terribly sad when she noncholantly tells him that she's "been done over." One of my favourite old movies! Sidney Poitier - Schwing!

Review: One of the best movies I have ever seen. The movie teaches you more than one lesson mainly that its okay to be you. Awesome movie, it totally rocks!

Summary: Little more than pleasant
Review: Pleasant, effective, and unintrusive, but there is not much going on. It is... nice. The piano solos are lovely, and the thematic material and orchestrations are typically wonderful considering the composer, but, again, there is simply not much going on...

Summary: Bravissimo!!!Who says "the book is better than the film"...
Review: Sidney Poitier is at his masterful best as Gordon Ralfe. This film is "cinema par excellance". You simply don't see film like this come out of Hollywood very often. "A Patch of Blue" truly represents Hollywood's best! As an aspiring film producer and director a sequel/remake of this film is high on my film project wish list. Say Denzel Washington as Gordon and Gwyneth Paltrow as Selina..."and the winner for "Best Picture" is...:)

Review: Sidney Poitier presents another magnicifent performance, this time in a romantic film. He portrays a man who befriends a young blind girl, and their friendship is often a source of controversy. This is definitely a great film!

Summary: simply perfect
Review: The key to the success of this film is its simplicity, including that it's in black and white. There is nothing to distract you from being enfolded in its beauty, and so your emotional involvement in characters, setting and plot is complete. It is a perfect period piece belonging to 1965, but its appeal is timeless. It's personal appealto me was as strong as if I were dreaming, and had the role of the blind girl! I dangled in emotional suspense until the very last scene, which shouldn't be revealed to those who haven't seen it! As an allegory of the civil rights movement, it spins the tale of gross injustice that could've continued were it not for one individual intervening for right (as in a small number of courageous people's protests bringing an end to the darkness of Jim Crow injustice). This is also a wonderful modern-day Cinderella story, complete with a prince (Poitier) who breaks the spell of the wicked mother (Winters). However the film is viewed the quality shines! The most important point in this film is the juxtaposition of characters, in which Poitier's character represents the voice of reason and responsibility, a ground-breaking role for a black man in 1965.

Summary: Stick with this Original
Review: There are only two words needed to explain my rating of this film: Sidney Poitier! This is a touching look at the societal mores that affect various factions of our culture: the poor, drinking family that uses pain to show affection; the disabled girl who is innocent of so much of the world; the upwardly mobile black man who could lose everything in the blink of an eye. The film is very well done and the acting, specifically Shelley Winters and, of course, Sidney Poitier, is excellent. Highly recommended!

Summary: A Must Have
Review: This film will touch your emotions. I've rarely seen a film of this caliber. I don't think I've viewed a film that portrays what "love" is all about any better than A PATCH OF BLUE. Describing the film as a "date film" is only partly fitting, in the sense that many "date" films today tend to be more funny than serious, appealing usually only to immature teenagers. Most teens won't appreciate the film because it didn't cost 100 million to create, nor was it filmed in color. Instead, the film reminds me of times past, when acting was noteworthy and films were produced with the audience in mind, not the actor's wallet. But to those who can understand a deeper film depicting characters of more uncommon relationships, this film is for you, and your significant other. Watch it together and enjoy.

Review: This is a phenominal movie. Sidney Poitier is fabulous. THIS IS HIS BEST WORK. His role transcends color barriers and proves that all of us can make a difference. Truely inspiring!
