Summary: Sal Mineo gives as brilliant a performance as James Dean
Review: I watched this film twice. Once for James Dean and the other time for Sal Mineo. I can see why James Dean is such an icon of "cool". His performance was timeless. I was routing for his character from the begining fo the film. But I feel that Sal Mineo's performance had a disturbing quality to it that drew my attention even more than Dean's. His character was so clingy and hyper, you just felt he was a ticking time bomb ready to go off. It had to be difficult to play someone who was so totally flipped out without overacting. I recommend anyone who watches this film to keep their eyes on his peformance.

Summary: a timeless classic
Review: This has to be my favorite movie of all time. In an age where big budget movies and special effects rule, it is refreshing to see a movie in which actors act and seem convincing. The young stars of the movie portray "teen angst" in a manner that is timeless as it still exists today. Overall I like the performances of Dean as rebel Jim Stark and of Sal Mineo as Plato. It is a story that is real and it is a joy to view.

Summary: TRULY A CLASSIC
Review: I was not born when this movie first came out, but I still liked it. I cannot remember all the emptions this movie made me feel. I held my breath during the chicken race, I laughed when they were in the empty swimming pool. This truly is a classic movie. They don't make them like this anymore.

Review: what a pleasure it is to watch this movie time and again. James Dean simply "is", he makes you forget that he is acting. There are many great scenes in this film but i love the scenes Jimmy has with his father and mother the best. I also love his jacket (the red one). He was the "coolest" ever, no doubt.

Summary: An extremely silly movie
Review: Perhaps this movie reached new ground when it first appearred in the 1950s, but it is an unfocused, melodramatic mess by today's standards. James Dean excessively emotes; Natalie Wood, although extremely beautiful, seems to suffer from multiple personality disorder; and Sal Mineo is so obnoxious as an apparently gay kid in love with James Dean that it is difficult to care what happens to him. And the lack of communication between all of these kids and their parents seems to have no genesis, no force; it's just a plot tool. Why is this movie considered such a classic?

Summary: A beautiful print of a truly important film
Review: I will be 30 next year. This was my favorite film when I was 15. I remember I taped it off of TBS and must have watched it at least 50 times. Watching this truly exceptional widescreen print brought back a lot of memories. I usually try to watch period movies in the context of their era, but this film is timeless. Do yourself a favor when watching this film: try to focus not on the (coincidental) early deaths of its' stars but instead on the powerful potrayals within.

Summary: a good study in alientated youth
Review: the characters in Rebel Without A Cause are three youths who feel negected by their parents. James dean and natalie woods character are not merely troubled outcasts but are rightfully angry kids with insight and concern into their plight. They are not simply juvenile delinquents but kids searching for a better family life. Althought Rebel is a worthwhile and interesting film,Crime In The Streets also starring Sal Mineo is a better and more powerful film from that period. This films gets right to the heart of the mentality of tough kids. The plot may seem simple to some, but the idea of an angry gang leader seeking to murder a man who told him off and slapped him is very true to life of this kind of person. The leader believes that no one can mees with him--if they do they die--. Whats more in regard to the review from the last person, some gang members in the 50s had guns too and used them. Check out some articles in the times from 1956 and 1957.

Review: James Dean was one of a kind. He was not the first to play a rebel nor a misunderstood youth but, he had a unique style all his own. James Dean made three films where he had starring roles. This is the one that made him a rebel. All three of his films including "East of Eden" and "Giant" are must haves for fans. Summary: The Beginning of a Revolution
Review: In recent years, the 1950s have been falsely romanticized as a decade of sock hops and afternoons at the malt shop. Obviously, this was not true for blacks and other minorities. But rarely is the 50s middle class teen. Unlike Marlon Brando's character in the similarly touted "The Wild One", Dean's Jim Stark did not come from a violent, alcoholic family. Rather, his parents were enjoying the American dream as were Judy's (Wood). Only Plato (Mineo) had readily obvious family problems. But all three main characters are alienated.

"Rebel Without a Cause" begins in the local police station, where Jim has been arrested for drunkeness, Judy has been picked up for walking around before dawn after a fight with her father, and the disturbed Plato has been brought in for killing a puppy. Later, the three are brought together in a chicken race in which Jim's opponent is killed. Pursued by the dead boy's friends, Jim, Judy, and Plato end up at a deserted mansion; only there can they be playful, away from their parents and society. But hiding away cannot defer the tragic ending.

Some parts of "Rebel" seem dated unless you are familiar with the period, but there are several elements that remain timeless; Jim wanting his hen-pecked father to show him how to be a man, the unwillingness of Judy's father to accept his daughter as a woman, and Plato's grief when he understands that his father is not coming home.

Bob Dylan wrote an apocolyptic song called "Hard Rain" that depicted a world in chaos because of America's pain. "Rebel Without a Cause" was a prfect realization of Dylan's dark vision: it showed that money and social advancement did not bring happiness
