Rating: Summary: No plot at ALL. Review: There are a few reasons why this movie was made. I will list them in no particular order:1.) Kate Winslet needed a vehicle to prove she's not a major studio sell-out, but an indie film babe. 2.) France needed to put its name on something. 3.) Someone wanted an excuse to film a dewy Winslet lounging in the Moroccan desert. 4.) Someone owed someone a BIG favor. Don't buy it. Don't rent it. Don't even watch it on cable. It was the biggest waste of time ever. I'm even a big fan of Kate Winslet, but I was totally confused by this. Plus, what's with those children? What was she, 13 when she had them? Winslet is still a tender 24 (only a few months younger than I am), yet we were to believe that she was the mother of two school-age girls, one of which was on the cusp of puberty? Call me a skeptic, but I found that completely implausible, especially since Winslet played a 17 year-old in the last film she made.
Rating: Summary: A good Sunday afternoon movie. Review: It's Sunday - you're bored. You wanna run 'round the corner and rent a movie, and here are your criteria: 1)Most be interesting, but not too heavy. 2)Should take place in an exotic setting that has been done to death. 3)Plot must be fairly simple - Mother drags daughters around Northern Africa, for example. 4)It must be in (you waited too long for someone to return 'Being John Malcavich'). 5)Most NOT star Kevin Costner. Well, you're in luck. 'Hideous Kinky' meets those criteria, plus it features child actors who can actually act. In fact, all the actors in this movie look like they enjoyed making the film. So, this Sunday, relax - put a tiny portion of your brain on hold - and enjoy this film. It's not Citizen Kane, but, hey it ain't Titanic, either.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful and mystical Review: Titanic was the first movie I saw Kate Winslet in, and while the movie really impressed me, the press surrounding it turned me off both of the lead actors. The great cover design caused me to pick up "Hideous Kinky" in the video store on 5 seperate occasions before I finally rented it. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful adventure movies I've seen. The next day I bought the DVD. Hideous Kinky (I still haven't figured out exactly what that means) has the patient cinematography of a foreign film, great supporting actors (including the kids), and Kate plays her naive character in such a beautiful and natural way that I now have full respect for her as an actor (a respect which was reinforced after seeing "Holy Smoke"). As for the actual DVD features, well there aren't any. The production quality is nice and crisp though... and on a movie like this, that's really the best feature.
Rating: Summary: Loved it.. Review: I thought the movie was great. Loved it. The movie's worth watching for the soundtrack alone. But, I thought the movie was a great adventure story and it's very enjoyable to watch. I especially loved the feeling you get at the end when they all wave goodbye. Excellent film! well worth renting or buying.
Rating: Summary: An Awful Waste of Good Talent Review: I love Kate Winslet. I read the book first and then saw the movie. Let me first say, the book was much better than the movie. So much of this story was left out. I didn't even think the book was that great. It has a good and interesting plot, but it's so poorly put together. You won't be missing much by not seeing this movie.
Rating: Summary: Hideous? Yes! Kinky? Not really. Review: A movie about hardly anything. The plot is so lacking you wonder if there was even a storyline that the characters were trying to follow. There was no real character development and nothing about the movie draws you in at all. Buy it if you are having a hard time getting to sleep at night.
Rating: Summary: Great Movie Review: I had a great time watching this wonderful sweet movie. Kate Winslet, Said Taghmaoui and the two girls were fantastic! I am from Morocco, and I was very impressed by the way the director took us from one rich scenery to the other, from the narrow allys of the Old Marrakech Medina to the vast landscape of the Berber landscape. The Soundtrack was one of the best I have ever heard. A Great Movie to enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Kate Winslet; Brilliant as ever! Review: This movie was great. A very good story about a young mum. A must see for all. Kate Winslet "my goddess" is hot, and acted brilliantly. A very humble follow up from Titanic. GREAT MOVIE!
Rating: Summary: DYNOMITE ! Review: I especially like the acting and also the fact you can buy this at yahoo auctions brand new for a lot cheaper
Rating: Summary: Two stars for two young stars Review: I've seen Kate in a couple of damn fine roles: Heavenly Creatures and just recently, Jane Campion's hilarious Holy Smoke. I admire her in those two performances and find them daring and unparalleled. In "Hideous", I not only found the editing jarring during the first thirty minutes, but I never cared for the developing relationship with Bilal, the drifter. Those moments fell flat, adding to more distraction with the story. Winslet's lack of genuine responsibility as a mom for her two daughter's well being, left me questioning her character's intellect. On the flip side, Bella Riza and Carrie Mullan as "Bea" and "Lucy" absolutely shine and do a wonderful job. I'll just have to blame it on the movie's director, not on Kate. This is a film I wanted to like, but it left me wanting to go see Holy Smoke, again.
