Summary: Great Movie but Problems with DVD
Review: A very enjoyable film - don't let the 3 hour length discourage you. It starts slowly, but ultimately it's upbeat, funny and quite engrossing.

There are some issues with both the VHS and the DVD. The VHS has the dreaded white subtitles that wash out on white backgrounds, but thankfully the DVD has the newer yellow subtitles with black outlines. However... the DVD doesn't play in Sony DVD players. I have two Sonys, one from '99 and a new progressive scan model, and neither could read the disc (which is why I had to hunt down the VHS for rent). I've read that it will work in other brand players, but may show lines in the picture. Anyway, the publisher is aware of the problem and hopefully will fix it soon. For now, buy the DVD at your own risk, but don't hesitate to rent or buy the tape.

Summary: Art at its most inspired and inspiring
Review: Cinema doesn't get any better than this. If you haven't seen this film then don't hesitate - buy the DVD right now, and play it when you're most in need of inspiration - it will dispel any doubts you might harbour about the power of film, the worth of art. The ability of Edward Yang to fuse imagination with, it must be assumed, an amazing honesty in reflecting upon his own life, to share what he holds most dear, and what evokes the most wonder, is something we, as an audience, can only marvel at and give thanks for. To say that 'Yi-Yi' inhabits the points of view of a child, an adolescent, an adult, a parent, a matriarch, the points of view of both male and female, that of the earnest, the honest, the ironic and idealistic, is to say that it truly touches upon life's richness. At one point in the film a character comments that films allow us to live life three times over, that's to say, they show us three times as much life as we could live by ourselves - most films give lie to this optimism, but 'Yi-Yi' itself makes such a statemest seem miserly. One of the best films I've ever seen.

Summary: A ONE AND A TWO AND I WISH THERE WAS AT LEAST A THREE
Review: Amid all the applause, 5-star reviews and film critics' raves, I fearfully stick this 173-minute superficial and plodding soap opera with a single star. Yes, it's just brilliant to start with a wedding and end with a funeral.Yes, it covered all of life's menu: Love, birth/death, growing up, brothers-in-law, ex-loves, business ethics and, in fact, most all human traits and transactions. All without resorting to any filmic sense, style, pacing, drama or movement. Without focus (literally too, the whole print's soft) or uniqueness, it just dumps all of life in a jumble before us without allowing any insights or involvement. Stereotypes and cliches have never been so boring.

Summary: A Gorgeous and Intimate Piece of Cinema
Review: Finally saw YI YI this afternoon...I saved it for a long rainy afternoon. It moves slowly but it will grow on you. The last scene is worth the wait. YI YI is a very simple beautiful movie but its depth is amazing...All the little details have something to say - pay close attention to the colors, reflections in the windows, doors, trains...to name a few. YI YI is a very rare cinematic experience...and I'm sorry that I missed it when it came out to the cinema...PS a little warning...the characters will stay with you for a long time.. maybe forever!

Summary: A Beautiful Chinese Film!
Review: Yi yi (A One and A Two) is a wonderful, intriguing film in its own rights. The movie focuses on the intertwining lives of a modern Chinese family living in Taipei, Taiwan. At the beginning, a wedding takes place. After the wedding, things start happening.

There's the father, who's part of a major computer games business, who might go bankrupt unless they strike a deal with a company. The father, NJ, is faced with trust and honesty when he meets the Japanese owner of Ota, a games company. His friends are also thinking about meeting up with Ato, the copycat of Ota. His wife, is going through a mid-life crisis type situation. Her mother just had a stroke and has a coma. The doctor says that Grandmother can only hear what they say, but it will help her feel better. So, the wife is thinking that her life is empty and retreats to a peaceful mountain for answers. Their children are going through major changes too. The oldest daughter, Ting Ting, is learning how to love when her friend, Lili, dumps her boyfriend. When Lili's ex-boyfriend starts dating Ting Ting, she has to learn the consequences of breaking up. Her little brother, Yang Yang, is 8 years old and always getting into trouble at school. A girl at school is the object of his affections, and he learns too, about his first love.

This film can definitely change the way you perceive life. It did that to me too. Some people take things for granted. Yi yi is meant to be a movie about simplicity, and I think that's what it is.

Summary: Elegant, Reflective, Deeply Insightful
Review: Despite the lengthy nature of this film, it is a true masterpiece of interwoven stories all of which speak volumes about growing up, relationships and life as a whole. The many events in the movie are suffused with subtleties and quietly intense emotions giving this film an illusive quality that is true to (or even truer than) life. The characters are all well-done, and the little kid was a nice touch providing a fresh but trenchant perspective on even the simplest of things in life... This film succeeds in combining the various facets of society and culture in a complete narrative... business, romance, childhood, family, celebration, mourning, etc. A memorable film full of beauty and meaning.

Summary: A quiet, even-handed masterpiece
Review: This film tries to encapsulate the whole of living within its frames, and Edward Yang succeeds more or less. Although the direction might seem too deliberate and fastidious, the patience pays off handsomely, as the epiphanies in the film are as sure and profound as the small revelations we get from the real life. This is definitely as un-American a film could get, and I was thankful for it. In the hands of a lesser director, there might have been easy resolutions and gratifications, but there is no tidily summed up denouement here. The ending is resonant and unforced. It's a shame Yi Yi received the slight from the Academy voters. In twenty years, students and cinemaphiles will study and love this film while 'Crouching Tiger...' will be viewed as a relic of the times, a piece of nostalgia.

Summary: Only Taiwanese can understand its fully meaning
Review: It's about a story in an ordinary or even modle Taiwan family. Here people laugh, here people cry.Every single scene is just like what we are. This touches me most. I think you'll feel the warmth in it.

(there's even a scene in my highschool, how small Taiwan is)

Summary: Tis NOT a Japanese version of anything. It's a Chinese movie
Review: Some people are so ignorant. This movie is NOT a japanese version of anything. This is a Chinese (Taiwan) movie made by Chinese people about Chinese people all speaking Manderin Chinese.

Awesome movie. A bit long, but awesome!
