Summary: The best movie I have ever seen!
Review: Sleepers is the most powerful and the most original movie I have ever seen. The script and the acting is excellant. I especially like the part where John and Tommy shoot Nokes. One of my favorite quotes is "It's a little harder for us to forget. You gave us so much more to remember." You get so caught up in the movie that you don't realize that it is a long movie.I love it.

Summary: A great movie done disservice by DVD
Review: This is an excellent, well acted, superbly directed drama done disservice on DVD. Rather than using a dual-layer disc, the film has been chopped in half to accomodate a two-sided disc. It's still a great film. If you like any one of the stars it's a must-have. Too bad viewing enjoyment is interupted by having to flip the disc.

Review: Ahh.. The best movie I've ever seen.. I only have one general comment though.. I hear a lot of critics saying that it was stupid to kill Sean Nokes (the "villian") half way through the movie... And they keep comparing it to "The Boys of Saint Vicent". Well... What do they want? An exact copy? I think it gave the movie more power and I loved it. Think about it.. If Nokes had a chance to see what he'd actually DONE to the kids (like SOME people wanted).. And if he felt sorry for it.. Wouldn't we, the viewers, feel sorry for HIM? That would also take the force of Bacon's perfomance away. Anyway.. I think it's fine the way it is, and absolutely perfect. Except they hardly ever show it on cable, and when they do, it's between 12 and 5am. END

Summary: Supporting Characters Saved the Movie
Review: Boys from hell's kitchen get in jail. Tortured and raped by guards. Grow up and seek a Monte-Christo revenge. The plot is good, if a little bit too straightforward. The most interesting character in the movie by far is Father Bobby (De Niro), a 'cool' priest who is as comfortable beating up an abusive father as preaching. There's Fat Mancho who gives out street wisdom to kids; Danny Snyder (Dustin Hoffman), the lawyer who mutters as if to himself in court. These characters keep the movie interesting. The boys themselves, however, have little individuality. And like all coming-of-age movies (American Graffiti, Stand By Me, October Sky) there has to be oldies playing, and the number of boys has to be 4. Young Carol is an underdeveloped character whom the director expects the audience to remember later on. The prison guards (Kevin Bacon, Terry Kinney) do what the plot expects them to do, and King Benny provides simple mob flick entertainment. The grown-up boys developed some characters but, ironically, even with the Monte Christo plot, one cannot help but get the sense that the boys, whose lives would have otherwise been very unextraordinary, were saved by the dramatic event.

Summary: Of Course, the Book is Better...
Review: but this is not a bad flick. I have heard conflicting accounts regarding the authenticity of this "true story." Kevin Bacon portrays a particularly disturbing, and DISTURBED, guard who is a main player in this story. You will never watch Footloose the same way again, but I digress...
You will come away from this movie impressed with the acting, if not completely outraged by the injustice of the story. Those tender of heart might want to keep away from this one...
This movie will give you plenty to discuss afterward.

Summary: This movie will make you think....
Review: Sleepers is a very powerful and disturbing movie. It chronicles the life of four boys growing up in "Hell's Kitchen", New York in the 1960s. It is told through the eyes of one of the boys, "Shakes" (Joe Perrino). Hell's Kitchen was a very rough place to grow up. However, a strict code of honour existed, and crimes against the person were not tolerated. A central character in this human drama was the parish priest, Father Bobby (Robert De Niro), a no-nonsense rough-and-ready representative of God.
The four boys - Shakes, Michael , John and Thomas - are inseparable, and they all get up to the usual adolescent hijinks, until one day something goes horribly wrong and they find themselves sentenced to incarceration at the Wilkinson Home for Boys. The Home is a brutal place, with physical, mental and sexual abuse almost a matter of routine, particularly by a foursome of guards headed by Nokes (Kevin Bacon).
Their time passes, and the four are released. They grow up, but their lives are forever damaged. One day, the adult John and Thomas happen across Nokes in a bar, a seemingly perfect setup for revenge.
Sleepers will disturb you. The imagery is often very graphic, and the subject matter is unpleasant. The movie takes a no nonsense and no glamour approach to its subject matter. The acting is absolutely top notch, and a superb ensemble cast make this story all the more dramatic and tragic.
