Rating: Summary: The greatest of all widescreen spectacles!! Review: BEN-HURThis is definatly one of my favorite movies of alltime!! For once, an epic film (217 min.), that doesn't get boring atany point. It's a very appealing, very exciting, and very dramatic film. Charlton Heston does an excellent job to depict the somewhat overplayed character. With thousands of extras, 65mm camera, terrific cinematography and special effects, this is a cream-of-the-crop biblical epic. The plot is about rivalry of old friends, in this case, Judah Ben-Hur and Messala. Because he won't betray his religion, Messala arrests him for a crime he knows was an accident. He is sent through a Roman Fleet, and continues to stalk Messala for a time for revenge. This takes us to the famous chariot race. For the time, (1959), it was the most expensive sequence, at 1 million dollars. What I didn't understand is nothing at all about the movie, it's about how critics redarded the fact that Jesus was involved it the film. Notice that the movie was based on a book, not entitled Ben-Hur, but The Tale of Jesus Christ. I don't want to spoil it the fact anymore, but take this into consideration. This is a wonderful widescreen epic, dramatic and entertaining. I'd see it as soon as possible!!
Rating: Summary: THE GREATEST HISTORICAL FILM EVER MADE Review: This is one of the greatest films ever made, demonstrated by the record number of Academy Awards received. The technical achievements in this film deserve great respect even when compared to modern special effects. The chariot race is probably the finest and most complex action sequence ever filmed. William Wyler was a master director in weaving together the historical, psychological and religious themes in this film which are still applicable today. He superbly focuses on people and the struggles they face in surmounting great ordeals and how a person's life can take many unknown paths. They don't make them like this anymore.
Rating: Summary: The Best Movie I've ever seen! Review: My man Charlton Heston! This man was made for the big epic dramas. Handsome, tall and dignified you can't find a better leading man for a part like this! (I'm not a little biased!) He is a man's man. Commanding, strong, unintimidated and HONEST. His performances are never disappointing. Heston for President! Ok, ok enough about Heston. ; ) Marsala, played by Stephan Boyd also gives a strong and excellent counter-part performance as the boyhood friend-turned-heartless-enemy. How's that? But again, a very inspiring and well-done picture which revolves around the life of Christ. You could almost picture it actually happening it was so believable. The Arab, was a very entertaining character, lightening up the seriousness of the drama. Hur's love interest, and his relationships between all the people in his life and the gripping scenes with Jesus' Passion were outstanding. You can't help but be deeply effected. Very emotional and inspiring film! If you haven't seen this one or don't already own it, you must come out from under your rock more often!
Rating: Summary: My all-time favorite film Review: Ben Hur gives true meaning to the term 'epic'. It combines elements of adventure, romance, tragedy, and faith over a span of years. In the face of unspeakable torment and misfortune, Judah Ben Hur proves all too human. Yet his ultimate triumph of the spirit offers hope and inspiration to us all. No film has the power to move you more, with its sweep, its grandeur, and its underlying story.
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking and true to life. Review: Ben-Hur to me is the only film that I can watch over and over again. The story line is execellent, the script is out of this world, and costumes, and action scenes are totaly brillent(not to mention the chariot race). I also like the way they interact Jesus in the film, showing you that no matter what few moments you spend with Him, it will change your life. What an amazing film. Citizen Kane I am sorry to say does not compare to Ben-Hur.
Rating: Summary: My aardvark is a transvestite Review: Remember you're a Womble! The problem with this movie is it's blatant theft from Smokey and the Bandit, they obviously believe a "Roman Twist" would confuse us. I am sorry but it is far from enough to fool anyone. A shame because the all female prison shower scene is a classic.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest films of all time. Review: Charlton Heston gives his best performance of his long distinguished career as the Jew Judah Ben-Hur who stood up to the might of the Roman army and became a legend . Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd are excellent as the boy hood friends turned foes.Oh yeah, watch out for the little chariot race, it's quite good.
Rating: Summary: Not the best ever, but I still liked it Review: The story is corny, the acting wooden- but this is still a brilliant film. The chariot race is brilliant-as is the galley scene, but the music iis awesome. the storyline is secondary to the themes of the film- good versus evil ie Ben hur, the ultimate good guy, and Massala, the evil symbol of imperial might. A great film for its time- but not the best by any means.
Rating: Summary: THE GREATEST MOVIE OF THE CENTURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: This movie is good, not only because of it's action, but because the ending is so touching.I am just a kid and I was crying at the end. This is a great movie for all christians.Charlton Heston is a real great actor,so is Stephen Boyd. This is defintely one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life!!!!
Rating: Summary: The ULTIMATE epic for all time. Review: No other film in history is worthy of winning more Oscars or honors than this grand scale production. I bought it when I was thirteen and fell in love with it immediately as did my family. What I love is the telling of Christ's life and how one man must come to terms with his faith and the political uprising of Rome at her zenith of world power. I have yet to see an epic as large and grand scale as this or as moving. The music moves me to tears each time I hear its blissful strains blow into the air. I always feel my eyes water whenever I hear the main theme play. We watched this film in my Bible History class in high school and the students were awed at the sea battle and that chariot race. Truly it is the greatest action scene ever put to celluloid without comparison to some ship busting apart in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. Though this film is longer than "TITANIC" it has a more human drama captured through the eyes of a director with a heart for sheer realism, no matter what time of history the story takes place. All film collectors should put this in a special spot on the video shelf as there is no other film of equal magnitude or brilliance as this. "TITANIC" was banal compared to the overwhelming emotion this film evokes. The Oscars was, again, just a popularity contest in giving it eleven Oscars and the script wasn't even nominated and I don't blame them. The story in "Ben-Hur" has better reason to be emotional and tearful, as it presents a message that will one day make an eternal decision for all upon this earth. Charlton Heston is outstanding as Ben-Hur and well deserved his Oscar for Best Actor. Every filmmaker should see this before heading out to film an epic and see just what the proper way is to make a truly grand motion picture achievement.
