Rating: Summary: Joshua Logan Period Piece Review: A very stylish retelling of the Willaim Inge play.Holden and Novak and a wonderful supporting cast made this film a big hit. Photographed by James Wong Howe and therefore must be seen on DVD! Moonglow and Theme from "Picnic" freezes everything in time..and although certain aspects of this film are dated..the story and structure are truly eternal. The final LONG SHOT of the train ..Holden and Novak ...melded together by Dunning and Stoloff.s music is quite stunning.
Rating: Summary: william holden is sensational as usual. Review: william holden lights up the screen again. only he could pull off a role like that at his then "old age" of thirty-seven. for those of you who are looking for a ntsc vhs copy, try "movies unlimited" on the net. i have also seen several pal vhs copies in Australia where i live. i can't believe they haven't sold out here.
Rating: Summary: My father loves it Review: I always listen to my father say "that's a wonderful movie and I can't have it, I don't find it" So I would love to give it as a present to him and convince him once more that internet works. Would anybody share a copy to me?
Rating: Summary: Wonderful film adaptation of a great play! Review: I heartily agree with the others here; release the DVD edition of this Josh Logan master work! I first saw this on stage as an undergrad at Purdue. I was so captivated, I purchased tickets for the following night's performance. When I discovered the film adaptation (while slightly modified due to 1950s censoring standards) I was thrilled to find the on-screen performance as engaging as the stage version. With so many bad "coming of age" movies in the theaters these days, it's great to watch Picnic again. --- AND I'D LOVE TO OWN MY OWN COPY ON DVD!!!
Rating: Summary: What is wrong with the STUDIO? Review: I saw this movie when it came out. I was 8 Years Old. Even then I was taken by the beauty of this movie. When I see it now (I got it off of TV) It brings back soo many memories and is one of the best movies ever made. Both Kim Novak and William Holden were at the height of their abilities! I would love to have a DVD version with Kim Novak talking about the movie. LET'S ALL TELL THAT STUDIO TO GET WITH IT!
Rating: Summary: Yes, yes ... please re-release this movie! Review: I add my voice to the chorus of those who would like to be able to purchase this wonderful movie. Anybody thought of writing to the movie studio that made it? Like many others, I first saw it as a teenager and was moved by the dance scene. (At my wedding, the first song my wife and I danced to was the theme from "Picnic"). Rosalind Russell's diatribe after the dance ("the gutter's where you came from and the gutter's where you belong") is also priceless. And for the person further down in the reviews who wanted to know the name of the festival Kim Novak was queen of, it was Neewollah (Halloween backwards).
Rating: Summary: One of the top five shows of all time! Review: William Holden and Kim Novak are sensational. I have seen this show 20 twenty times and could watch it 20 more. Ten stars! Would love to buy the video.
Rating: Summary: i have already left a review - addition: Review: 7-19-99 AOL is having a poll on favorite movies. mine is the only one i saw for "picnic". thought someone else may want to add it for theirs ?
Rating: Summary: A stranger arrives into a tiny town..seduction ensues. Review: I was astonished by what welled up inside while watching the dance scene....never has there been a moment in any film to evoke such a rare and stripped bare emotion....It sliced through me like a million tiny shards of glass...This film simply must be released to video.
Rating: Summary: A true American classic - Holden & Novak sizzle Review: I saw this movie as a teenager in Australia and it has stayed with me forever. William Holden was the epitome of masculinity and raw sex appeal and Kim Novak was his feminine counterpart. The dance scene is truly memorable. Their chemistry was screen magic. With a great supporting cast and incredible music and scenery this movie delivered it all. A true classic.
