Review: Watch this film carefully. Every detail holds a truth and a revelation. When you gather all the symbolic references, you realize the true true message of the film. Despite their best efforts to the contrary, all the kids end up just ike their parents. There are references to what's going to happen in 10 years, when Jim grows up. 10 years pass in 36 hours, and that's the heart of the tragedy. If you follow closely, you see that Plato gravitates toward homosexuality because of paternal molestation. Make special note of why Plato was in the police station, he killed some puppies. He did it so that they wouldn't grow up. In the end, Jim kills Plato so he won't grow up. Watch closely.

Summary: Pleasantly surprised
Review: Honestly, I went in with low expectations. I admit I expected Dean to be a good looking, bad actor. I expected the story to be ridiculous and cheesy. At the end of the movie I was converted. 3 things struck me. The cinematography is gorgeous. Beautiful shots and amazing color. My eyes couldn't look away. The acting is actually completely brilliant. Dean is fantastic and I felt sad that when I jumped back onto Amazon I wasn't going to find a huge list of films with him starring. And the story, while a little melodramatic, is quite timeless. You can see this theme in so many movies that followed but this is my favorite. I am a believer now.

Review: The reason I say that this film is different, is because this sort of film topic was not popular in the 1950's! I always wanted to see this and one day I got the chance. I heard that James Dean had been a great actor, but I didn't believe it. I do now! Not just a different film but a powerful one at that! A well directed film. But an overall well acted film as well! Grade:A-

Summary: A CLASSIC
Review: This is to a commentor who said "At least kids back then did not result to Mac10's and drugs". Do you not remember the beginning of the movie when those punks pulled out switch blade knives and cut eachother deeply? Did you not remember the part where the kid at the end shots a Colt 45 at the cops? What are you talking about! Kids then are the same as they are now! The only difference is because the media is bringing out these stories more. Even in the ancient times kids went off to fight in wars, which hardly bares any truth to your statement that "Kids are worse today". Al Capone, a notorious gangster from the 1920's wasn't a real nice guy either. I bet you that you will say the same thing twenty years from now, forty years from now, and so on. This movie is an example of teens in the 50's, as far as the cloting, cars, and music-but that doesn't mean kids act different today. You can't blame it on TV, or the internet-that's just being a victim with a "blame everyone else" attitude. There is a 1979 movie called "Over The Edge which shows the life of teens in the 1970's. But even in "Over The Edge" there were teens lipping off to adults and cops, getting in serious fist fights,using dangerous weapons etc.. Same thing presented in this 1955 movie. The point is that human behavior has always been the same, regardless if it is 1929, 1955, 1969, 1979 or 2000.

Summary: An Amazing Film
Review: Reading some of the reviews I noticed some people did not care for James Dean's acting style. They feel he was being over dramatic. What was great about James Dean was he had the ability to show his emotions in a way that seemed so real. Maybe these people are forgeting just how "corny" we all can act in dramatic situations. This film spoke to its generation. It made it alright to be a kid. It took the idea that children were virtual slaves to their parents and showed just how wrong this belief was.

Review: Brilliant in every sense of the word. Especially through my adolescent eyes I felt myself relating beyond description. In an almost eerie way James Dean captures the emotions of the angst-ridden youth, every single detail down to the last breath is skillfully orchestrated. Definitely a film that stands beyond the test of time and immortalizes Dean and Wood in way that they could never do on their own

Review: This is one of those movies that prove that no matter how much things change, things remain the same. I'm only 16, but as I viewed this movie I put myself in the story and it worked. A classic picture. Now If only I could get EAST OF EDEN on video...

Summary: very tender film
Review: The best thing about this movie is Sal Mineo, he is absolutely delicious! In fact, he plays a sexually stifled teenager longing for a means to adequately express himself. James Dean's character I find somewhat irritating, partly because he fails to respond to Mineo's character, and the result is tragic -- Plato's death is in fact, the death of sexual ambiguity, and Dean gets happily paired off with Vivian Leigh's character, an attempt at reinforcing heterosexuality. That is the most disturbing part of the film. That was then, of course, times have changed, etc. Nevertheless, it is interesting to think about why the filmmaker wanted to include a sexually coded character in the first place only to have him killed at the end. Anyway, Sal Mineo is adorable, and those of us who find ourselves identifying with his character even partly will certainly respond to this movie, whether positively or otherwise.

Review: A great film, complete classic. As a person who did not grow up anywhere near the 50s/60s this film still relates. The language may have changed now, and mannerisms, but surely that's the film's appeal. This portrays modern human worries with a healthy does of Dean glamour. Emminently quotable too!
