Summary: Great Movie, Sub-Par Viewing Experience
Review: First of all, if you haven't seen this movie, go see it RIGHT NOW! The action sequences are excellent, not to mention the plot and music score.

That said, I had high hopes for the DVD release, as it promised extended sequences, 5.1 audio, and better image quality. As for the first two, I was not dissapointed. The extra scenes contributed to the plot and enhanced the action. Also, the music is excellent. The image quality, however, leaves something to be desired, which is why I only gave it 3 stars. The MPEG translation (the process of converting 35 mm film into DVD format) was horrible with dark scenes and motion (the waterfall scene was especially bad) resulting in a blurred and/or pixelated image. All I can say is that I hope they release another version.

Oh, and if you don't yet have it, grab the soundtrack. It's kind of in the theme of The Rock or Crimson Tide, by which I mean that it is really, really good.

Summary: Great Movie, Sub-Par Viewing Experience
Review: First, I'd like to say that if you haven't seen this movie, go see it RIGHT NOW. The action is amazing, but equally good is the plot and music score. Also, the extended sequences in the DVD really help in understanding the plot as well as heightening the action sequences.

That said, I had high hopes for the DVD, especially the 5.1 sound and picture quality. On the sound, I was not dissapointed: it was amazing, especially in the running battle at the end. The image, however, left a lot to be desired, which is why I only gave this movie 3 stars. The MPEG conversion of the movie (the process where they convert the 35 mm film into DVD format) was definitely sub-par, almost to the point of being unwatcheable (as in the waterfall scenes). It seems that quick motion did not encode well, resulting in a blurryness and pixelation in many scenes.

Therefore, while the movie was excellent, the DVD version leaves a lot to be desired.

Summary: DAY-LEWIS RULES !
Review: Where Daniel DAy-Lewis set his feet, a movie is good. Just as that. He's one the greatest actor alive, but it is a shame that he makes so few movies... THis adaptation, of course, is too much cut, but it is a great entertainment.

Summary: An absolute must-see
Review: This was a REALLY great movie. It was very artistic, with an excellent story. It's also interesting from a historical perspective too, because they tried to keep things fairly accurate. I wish Eric Schwieg (the main character's brother) had a bigger part though. Altogther an inspiring, if depressing (to me at least) movie.

Summary: Michael Mann remasters a classic
Review: i enjoyed Mann's reworking of the elements. I saw his main purpose to strengthen the snubbed brit beau character. the full effect is a much more powerful sacrificial death scene at the huron hands and more noble. it also redeems him fully for lying to cora's father at the fort.

the fort battle scenes have been lengthened and creates an epic stage for the story to unfold.

also, russell means' wonderful speech at the end is left to play out.

having both versions, i appreciate them as different and strong films. Mann has def. reasons for the changes and they can be seen as none are gratuitous or determental to the film. i love the original cut because that is the one i saw on the big screen. i also love the dvd cut. also, a testament to the power of editing and a testament to one of america's greatest directors.

the dvd is worth a look and def. worth buying if you are a fan of this movie or director.

Summary: Don't buy the DVD!
Review: This is a great movie but the DVD version is a severe disappointment. I am not so disappointed by the director's different artistic vision as I am by the poor quality of the DVD itself. If you liked the original version you probably won't like this.

I suggest putting the original version on the opposite side then the movie should be recut again to produce a technically superior version that reflects the director's vision. And this time put in the scene that explains where on earth they got the canoes they took to the fort.

Summary: Heck yeah, this is a good movie!
Review: Oh, yeah. This is the best movie I have ever seen. Daniel Day Lewis is awesome in it. Who cares if it is 8 years old, you have to see it if you appreciate good movies!

Summary: Attention:
Review: I read the review of "A viewer from Ventura, CA " and I agree with him. I saw the director cut version, and a lot of things there doesn't make too much sense. If the original was, what he said were, then I see no point in this director cut version. I definitely would like to see the original version rather the director cut version, which seems to have cut some critical scenes.

Summary: DVD ripoff
Review: The Last of the Mohicans is one of the best movies I've seen. My girlfriend suggested I buy it on tape, but I held out until it was released on DVD. I can't believe the parts that were cut out (and you won't either). I feel like I was ripped off. I went out and bought the tape, and left the DVD to collect dust. How do I e-mail my opinions to the director that edited the movie for DVD? Unbelievable.
