Rating: Summary: flawed film, brilliant performance Review: Directed by Brian DePalma from an Oliver Stone script this actually feels more like an Oliver Stone picture than one of DePalmas. Stone loves excess and almost all of his films are about people who just can't get enough of something whether it be sex, drugs, rock n roll, violence or money. DePalma is a master at having fun with Hitchcock brand suspense so the Stone script seems an odd choice. Scarface is really not a very appealing story. There aren't any heros, just a very charismatic villain. The story might pretend to be a warning against excess but it plays like a celebration of it. The film has been ridiculed for being "excessive" in its depiction of drugs and violence and thats a fair argument but if you see beyond that to the character Tony Montana you will see that though the picture and the script might qualify it as an "exploitation" picture, the main character is something more. The character Tony Montana is what makes the film watchable and how well Al Pacino plays him. The accent is especially good but also the look, the strut, the attitude is just perfect. The character seems authentic which is rare in films of any kind. I think that authenticity is what makes this picture linger in the memory and make you want to watch it again every few years. It amazes me that DePalma made the film. Nothing in DePalmas film history would lead you to believe that he would be interested in this type of character or story. Maybe he was just offered the job and took it. I like DePalmas films and Blow-Out & Carlitos Way are far superior in every way to this film but Scarface is not a directors or a screenwriters film. Its an actors film, its Pacinos film. The film does not romanticize violence(like Bonnie and Clyde for instance)but what it does that hurts the picture is show so much violence(especially at the end) that its easy to forget this is not an action picture but a character study. What makes the film and its main character seem authentic is that it really doesn't attempt to show its character in any but an unflattering light. Hes charismatic but hes a career criminal and the argument that Stone seems to be making is that circumstance made him that way. So I suppose if there is a redeeming argument to be made in defense of the film it is that message: social injustice and abject poverty create monsters. If it wasn't for all that coke the film might also work as a comment on Americas obsession with money and how Tony Montanas excesses just reflect American excesses but the coke kind of blurs that issue. Do not expect a masterpiece but see the film for Al Pacinos performance as Tony Montana, a character you will not soon forget.
Rating: Summary: Scarface Review: I just ordered Scarface over the Internet. It is bootlegged, but I don't care, as long as I have the movie. I will buy the aniversery edition this September. I was truly amazed with this film, it was powerful because of Pacino's acting. This film is similar to Grand Theft Auto Vice City. It is like a clone of the film, with different characters. Both mansions are very similar, the cars are similar, the characters, and even the night club. I recommend this film to any Al Pacino fan, or any fan to great american films. This movie rivals the Godfather series, and is better than Godfellas. If you like Pacino you would like the 1973 film Serpico.
Rating: Summary: The world is your's. Review: Thank you sooo much for re-releasing this movie on DVD! This is one of the best movies ever made. I highly recommened it if you're into drugs, violence and all things 80's. I have rented this movie enough times to buy 20 DVD's! Thank you for finally allowing me a chance to purchase it!
Rating: Summary: "You know what Capitalism is?" Review: Scarface. The Crime Drama genre has produced some truly powerful and entertaining films. One of the more controversial ones is 1983's Scarface. It is a film that has earned a reputation for its violence and profanity. However, it's a reputation unearned. Scarface is graphic, but nowhere near as brutal as Goodfellas or even Pulp Fiction. Though I consider Scarface to be the best work from De Palma, who has spent his long career trapped in the shadow of his influences, always crafting tributes that are pale reflections of something greater; and in a sense, this can be said of Scarface. But Scarface works on its own terms. That's because the power of this film has nothing to do with De Palma, and everything to do with Oliver Stone's script and Al Pacino's brilliant, over the top interpretation of Tony Montana, a piece of Cuban filth who has all the grace and intelligence of an ape. This guy is the anti-Michael Corleone. From dirt-poor dishwasher to wealthy drug lord. Oliver Stone uses this Third World refugee trash to expose the murderous corruption of the "American Dream". Unfortunately, Scarface is an unnecessary three hours, so there are time when the pace can begin to drag. This film would have been much better with tighter direction and faster editing. Yet, the bullet-ridden finale is a worthy pay-off. A classic film in its own way. Like it or not.
