Summary: Pretty good DVD version but deserves better
Review: For those that have not seen this film and are fans of the gangster/crime genre should see it at least once. I predict that most of the people that will be reading this already know how violent, contraversial, quotable, and great this film really is; so the majority of the review is about the DVD itself. First off, the dust sleeve the DVD comes in is beautifully designed. You'll probably try your hardest not to get any smudges or fingerprints on it...which is pretty easy to do. It is odd that there is no booklet with even a scene selection index. Even the cheapest DVD's I own have some sort of printed out scene selection index. Needless to say, this is a small gripe but I would have rather have had I nice booklet than an ad for DefJam Recordings stuffed in. Most of the extra features are fairly well done. All the documentary features give some good insight into how the movie came about and the censor problems they had to overcome. Although, even Pacino wouldn't give up the secret of what he really snorted in the movie. Even the number of deleted scenes are good. Although not all of them are that exciting it is nice to see before and after "action!" is called. The biggest blemish on the DVD is the DefJams Origins of a Hip-Hop Classic. In my opinion, it sort of cheapens the movie. Yes, most rappers lives of excess are reflected in this movie but...so what! I don't need to know what P.Diddy thinks of this movie. It is just another marketing ploy in my eyes. The widescreen version of the movie looks and sounds beautiful otherwise. If you have a previous widescreen version of the film on DVD it may not be worth your while to get this version since the extras aren't too essential. For those of us that love the movie and never had a good widescreen presentation of it should definately get this version.

Summary: THE ART OF ACTING AND FILM MAKING, ALL IN THIS MOVIE
Review: I haven't seen Scarface since it was released in 1983. Now, at 35 I bought this dvd and it's a whole new experience for me in terms of superior image, sound quality and of course powerful acting by all the actors and actresses in this movie. As you watch the 2nd dvd, you might conclude the success of this movie : Brian Depalma directing + Oliver Stone script + Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Rober Loggia and F. Murray Abraham + Giorgio Moroder in music+ John Alonzo in Photography. What can I say about Al Pacino : literally he transforms into Tony Montana. Besides Pacino, few actors can transform into their characters, fine actors like Robert Deniro ,Daniel Day Lewis, Dustin Hofman, Harrison Ford and Russel Crowe. Great movie experiencie. It should belong to your dvd collectibles. And about the ultraviolence......It's the real world man !!!.

Summary: Very Good movie
Review: First of all, I would like to say that this movie is very educational. It teaches us about the dark aspects of human nature that lie deep in our minds--'the American dream' as it puts it. We may not be able to live it, but seeing it the way Mr. Montana do it gives a certain thrill.

Now to my review of this Anniversary Edition dvd set. Contrary to what you may think, I disapprove of its layout (which is why I didn't buy it). I really can't stand the fact that the DVD makers had to put a bunch of illiterate rappers on such a great film. I would have to say that this is a travesty to what the movie really stands for. Maybe if they added Al Pacino or Oliver Stone commentaries... I wouldve understood... but a bunch of idiotic ganja-smoking rappers. This takes my vote down 2 whole stars.

Review: Brian De Palma's epic morality tale is, at 20 years old, if anything more powerful than it was in 1983. At several points during a viewing we are tempted to laugh as the movie seems to cascade over the top, but each time we are overpowered and pulled back into this film, which is as forceful and as persuasive as its lead character, Tony Montana. Scarface may not be a realistic movie, but it demands to be taken seriously nonetheless.

At the top of the list of the over the top aspects of this film is Al Pacino himself. I have no idea who/what that caricature on the screen was, but I do know that Al Pacino was that character. A remarkable performance. Other over the top aspects include the cheesy music and close-ups on Pacino's eyes whenever anyone makes advances on his sister. These techniques, along with the Dawn of the Dead-feel of the detention camps give this film a B-movie quality at times. And then there's the jingoistic depiction of the Cubans themselves. But again, somehow these cheap tactics reel in even the jaded viewer here. The movie just insists, through sheer force, on being taken seriously.

Once the viewer acquiesces, they are in for quite a ride. No matter how many times we've heard or seen (in life or film) that pride cometh before the fall, that excess and immorality always come back to burn you, it is impossible during his rise not to admire aspects of Tony including his single minded ambition, confidence, and his absence of duplicity. It's a mutant variation on the American dream, and the ethos that accompanies it. Tony's aforementioned qualities produce some truly volcanic lines (of dialogue), particularly in his scenes with a young and somewhat raw Michelle Pfeiffer.

Several side plots work well along the way, but we never drift far from Pacino. Although we know the fall is coming, it is nevertheless depicted in a harrowing fashion (although the assassination subplot -from lead-up, through act, to denouement IMO detracted). And today's films have nothing on the final shootout.

A close look at the careers of both Director De Palma and Screenwriter Oliver Stone reveal plenty of imperfections. And if the flaws are not altogether hidden here, like magicians the two (or maybe three, counting Pacino) somehow steer our eyes away from them. In addition to a prescient, apocalyptic paradigm of 21st century international, intra-necine violence, the three also give us a 4.5 star film.

Review: It's been 20 years since people were first introduced to
Brian De Palmas bloody crime epic it was looked upon like no
other film of it's time back in '83 because of it's graphic
beleive it or not most of the goings on in this movie was
taken by actual Miami DEA agents who told De Palma what the
torture methods were the columbians would do to get info on
the whereabouts of drugs, or intel on deals, such as the
scene with the chainsaw yes people this is true method from
druglords of columbia.Does the film in 20 years lose it's
edge to shock and amaze you no and that's the only reason
other then having the great Al Pachino that this film has
become classic it's lines have appeared in many other films
few other films challenge it's violence(Saving Private Ryan
,Black Hawk Down,Straw Dogs,Reseviour Dogs,Dead Presidents).

Feidel Castro, has sent Cuban refugees from Cuba to the
United States , Presdient Jimmy Carter has agreed they would
be taken as immigrants of the Unites States ,even criminals
of Cuba were in the boats over to America such as Tony Montana
(Al Pachino),who wanted the American dream him and his freind (Steven Bauer)who are working at a sleezy diner in Miami have
now made a deal to make a trade with a columbian druglord it
goes terribly wrong and Tony looses one of his freinds,still
wanting to make money the quick way and in search of the real
american dream tony joins a drug kingpin (Robert Loggia)who
gives Tony two rules don't underestimate the other guys greed
and don't get high on your own supply, wich Tony neglects it
seems that Tony just get's higher and higher making a deal
with a columbian drug kingpin (Paul Shenar) who asks Tony
a favor to assasinate a guy that seems to be slowing him down.

But it just seems that Tony makes mistake after mistake getting
people around him either mad or wanting to kill him, Tony who
now himself becomes the biggest drug kingpin in America now is
making the biggest mistakes of all the I am untouchable kind but
that will soon be over when columbian hitmen come to Tonys 100
million dollar mansion and declare war ,a bloody battle wich ultimately wich ends in the lives
of the hit men and Tonys life , moral of the story never get
greedy the easy way it will always come back to you in blood.

Universal's 20 th anniversary edition has some intresting
documentarys about this popular ganster film,but it's real

accomplishment on this 2 disk version is that we get to see
and hear a Scarface that has never been heard before to people
even in 1983, we get to hear it in DTS Digital wich makes
Scarface a hole new experience so crank up your sound on your
system and let Tony Montana give you the guided tour into the hell of the American dream.

Review: ..who are wondering what "Gangsta Rap" has to do with Scarface..

First of all, when many critics and the public slammed this movie when it came out in 1983, it seemed to enjoy a massive cult following on video in the late 80's, mainly with young, urban rap and hip-hop fans. One of my early jobs years ago was in a popular video store, and we couldn't keep Scarface in the store. In my opinion, if this movie DIDN'T enjoy a second life through video
cult-status, this re-issue wouldv'e NEVER happened (or at least the hype and buzz wouldn't be this large)
Regardless of what many think of the rap/ hip-hop community, Mr. De Palma, Mr. Stone, and Mr. Pacino owes a great deal of gratitude to them.
