Summary: Interesting... a little heartbreaking!
Review: When Chuck gets stranded on a desert island, he must learn to survive, while hoping for a rescue. The plane crash is very well done and artfully planned to realistically get him to that desert island... every aspect was carefully thought out... and impressively so.The movie dragged a bit during the three years that Chuck was on the island, and was much more exciting when he returns home and finds how life moved on during his absence. Very touching movie, and interesting and unsuspected ending.

Summary: Ok, so I am the only one...
Review: Maybe it is just me, but this movie bored the hell out of me. And this is a movie fan who has seen Gone With the Wind, The Magnificent Ambersons, and countless other movies a lot of people consider long and boring, more times than I can count. It was a good concept that did not follow through in my opinion. He is stuck on a deserted island and nothing else happens. No fights for his life with native wildlife, nothing. Maybe that sounds shallow but I guess a movie with someone just doing nothing is not my cup of tea. I sat through it to say that I did, and regret the lost hours of my life. I supose long time fans of Tom Hanks may like it, but his superstar attitude after Forrest Gump made me sick so I am not really a fan of his.
I did not care for the acting, the writing, or anything about this movie but the initial premise. I never even got any feel that he was actually this person.

Summary: Tom is a genius.
Review: Tom Hanks is THE best actor. He holds the screen for the whole time he is by himself. I doubt any other actor could do that. Helen Hunt is one of my favorite actors too and she really does a great job in this movie. Very great special effects, especially the crash scene. (I was so scared during the crash scene that I think my knuckles turned white.) I recommend this to all Tom Hanks fans and to people who enjoy love stories and triumphs-of-the-human-spirit stories, and so on.
At least rent this. It really is great.

Summary: Very entertaining and one of the best movies of 2001
Review: I gave this movie five stars because it deserves five stars. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Tom Hanks, who plays Chuck Noland, a FedEx expert and obsessed with time does an excellent job. I think that they picked the perfect actor to play the part, because Tom Hanks plays it well. Helen Hunt also one of my favorite actresses does a good job as well, although she isn't in it that much, when she is, she makes the movie even better. Both of them are very talented actors and have made this movie an instant success and I consider it the best movie of 2001.

Summary: Compelling, enigmatic, and haunting
Review: I watch movies a lot, and by the next day, I have usually forgotten that I've even seen one. Not so with Cast Away. I couldn't (and can't) stop thinking about it. In fact, I've never written one of these reviews before. First, my logic tells me the following: surviving a deep-sea plane crash and the ensuing four years on an unchartered island with nothing but indigenous resources and the contents of miscellaneous Fed Ex packages that have washed ashore from the wreckage is about as incredulous a story as can exist. (Never mind being rescued in the end, as was the case.) This is not to exclude the myriad of Hollywood dialogue cliches, characterizations, and predictable plot turns that are found within the story. So why can't I stop thinking about this film? I think I know, yet I don't know. But I'll give it a stab. 1) Tom Hanks. Those two words are enough to convey anyone's reason for liking a film. Few modern-day actors could successfully make anyone suspend their disbelief about surviving for four years on an uninhabited island. Hanks does it, though. Marvelous to behold is the transformation of character he undergoes: he begins the movie as a work-centered, detached Fed Ex executive, incapable of any deep emotion or empathy. Four years later, he returns from his "journey" on the island a changed person. He is quiet, introspective, and thankful for the little things, seeing each day as a new experience. Besides the change in physical weight Hanks underwent (robust before the crash, lean, and pared down after) the look in his eyes says it all. Before the crash the look was self-centered. By the fourth year on the island, the look is faraway and sullen, that of a man who lives the same, isolated existence every day, inwardly mourning over and reflecting on the loss of civilization and human companionship, and enduring the sameness of life as the sole human on an island. After his rescue and return to civilization, Hanks' look is now deep and informed by the rigors of having to re-learn how to live (fishing, making fire, building shelter, etc), yet it is painful and hopeful at the same time. A remarkable metamorphosis. Hanks' character has to be totally cut off from people in an extreme way to learn and appreciate their existence. These scenes of Hanks' gaze, which capture the essence of his solitude, are haunting and captivating, and say more than any amount of dialogue or music could say. Also, the long stretches of only one backdrop (the island), the one-man-show aspect of the movie, and the lack of music through most of the film reminded me much of a live theatre production. Few motion pictures not based on a play offer this type of action, and it was a welcome and refreshing change. 2)Despite the aforementioned predictability, there is much left unsaid in this movie. I think that's part of its charm and appeal. There are lots of questions left unanswered. The movie triggers lots of "I don't get it" sort of responses. Undoubtedly, this is director Robert Zemeckis' intent. Does a movie have to come right out and offer a perfect ending, with all the questions answered and all the loose ends tied up? Gosh, I'd love to know what was in that Fed-Ex box that Hanks leaves unopened throughout his stay on the island and eventually returns to its sender at the end of the movie. I love that. It got me thinking. Isn't that what movies are supposed to do? Similarly, the movie closes with another classic, enigmatic look from Hanks, as he stands at a literal and symbolic crossroads in some remote, Texas town (I recognized the signpost, as well as the dusty landscape, being a TX resident), by himself once again. He looks content somehow in a strange way. Has he gotten used to a lonely existence? Could he ever fully integrate himself again into society? Why didn't he go off with this attractive Texas gal who gives him directions a few minutes before, and who obviously likes him? I don't know, but I like it. That's the way life is. Real. Unanswerable. True. Unlike Hollywood, it isn't perfect. Sometimes you just don't know all the answers. What a great way to end a film. Of course it left me hanging, but it got me thinking and it touched me, and it helped me to appreciate all that I have. It reaffirmed the power and value of treasuring each day and the things that are really important in life: other people. Mission accomplished.

Summary: Dont listen to these other two reviews...
Review: I saw this movie in the theatres and own the dvd. It is slow moving so if you one of those people who dont read, and dont enjoy a great emotional story, and just want a 45 minute boom bam slapped together movie then you wont like this movie. Tom hanks does a great job with this one, he acts just like any one of us would If we were on a deserted island. I guess that would mean he acted well. But the other reviewers just want people to be constantly in combat and how much combat are you gonna get on a desert island. In a word this movie is "great"

Summary: Almost soundless, yet amazing
Review: There is very little speech in this film, but there is so much else. There is no need for talking, because the actions and emotions are played out so well without it! There is a plane crash near the beginning, a bloated corpse, and some bloody wounds, but these are about the only things that young children might be afraid of. Cast Away is borderline PG-13, if there is worry over the rating. This film is a must-see!

Review: Although it may sound interesting, this tale of courage, fate, love and most of all survival is more moving and touching than any other movie. Tom Hanks stars in this life story as a Fed Ex employee, who is determined to get hispackages on time. His plane crashes and being the only survior he is determined to get out of the island in the Pacific. This tale is truly touching and amazing how such a terrible accident can really change your life completely. Deffinately a must seen for people of all different tastes in movies.

Summary: boring and absolutely pointless movie
Review: this movie is so boring and predictable i can't believe tom hanks would ever agree to this. the only reason why i gave it 2 stars is because of tom hanks. at first i was expecting this movie to be like robinson crusoe, but it's much, much worse. helen hunt and tom hanks have about as much chemistry as david hyde pierce and jane leeves on frasier. who cares. the part with tom hanks on the island was boring, but i expected that anyway. then guess what? he gets off the island. i never saw that one coming. then he gets all the way home, and guess what? helen hunt is married. then the movie just kind of ends. i think he was better off staying on the island. maybe this movie should have only been shown on a deserted island so no one would have to be subjected to it.

Review: Another Z grade movie I've watched just for the satisfaction of strengthening my despite for commercial productions. The whole story is unbelievable to say at least and acting could be a lot better. Totally boring, awfully long and painfull to watch. Any intelligent person would instantly take the DVD back and demand a money return, but guess what? I'm quite a masochist and had the godly patience to wait until it finished. ....
