Summary: Greatest Adventure Movie Ever? No doubt about it!
Review: Great Adventure movies have always been rare. In recent times (last 15 years) they've become nearly extinct. 'Last of the Mohicans' stands out even more so in this desolate landscape. This movie cannot be over-praised. The total commitment by the director, actors and film crew is evident in every scene. The writing is intelligent and thoughtful. The acting, outstanding. The action scenes are as hard-hitting and realistic as you'll ever see. When Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) confronts an Indian warrior, both with tomahawks in their hands, the ensuing fight will leave you breathless because of its absolutely convincing realism. Beautiful Madeline Stowe gave an Oscar-worthy performance, as does Daniel Day-Lewis. It's a complete mystery to me why this movie didn't win best picture (it wasn't even nominated, Clint Eastwood's 'Unforgiven' won that year), and director Mann certainly should've been considered for the award that Eastwood won. Anyway, not important, since Oscar rarely gets it right, but that's another story. See this movie. It merits repeated viewings, and I think you'll find it will become one of your favorites also. Bye for now.

Summary: Good movie
Review: Much, much, much better than the book. The only time in Hollywood history has a movie been made that's better than the book. That's all I can say.

Summary: A must see!
Review: An epic tale of 3 surviving members of an almost extinct tribe. Besides it's killer soundtrack, this movie just plain rocks!
Breathtaking views...draw jopping battle scenes....a forbidden love...

Summary: Stay away from directors cut.
Review: I say so because it doesn't have the original cut as well. So until the first versions out. I won't get the directors cut too.

Summary: One of My Favorites
Review: At least once a year I will sit down and watch this movie. It's a great story, with characters you're drawn to, incredible scenery and its all together in one movie package. This is definitely one to own in your collection.

Summary: One of the most wonderful movies ever
Review: Since this is one of my favorite movies and I like everything about it, I don't really know where to begin...

It's *very* leisurely based upon the novel by Fenimore Cooper, but don't look for the same plot or the same character build, because it's different. And please look for the plot in another review, I'm not going to describe it again :).

Three things make this film great:

1. The acting; I loved each and every one of the actors, they created their characters beautifully. I especially loved Madeleine Stowe, she was perfect for the role with her apparent fragility concealing inner strength and delicate beauty. Daniel Day-Lewis was also great, very masculine and strong without being handsome in the classic way.

2. The landscapes. Except for Seven Years In Tibet I don't think I have ever seen such magnificent scenery in a movie, grandiose, breathtaking: mountains, rivers, waterfalls, forests. Sadly this is best seen in cinema (and I did watch the movie on the big screen no less than 4 times)

3. The music. I don't have enough praise words for the soundtrack, it is the most beautiful one I have ever listened to, and fit together absolutely perfectly with the images and with what was happening. I wouldn't change any single note on it. At least 30% of the movie is the soundtrack.

All these are wonderfully put together in a heart-warming drama about sacrifice, love, adventure.

Note: This review is for the movie itself, not the VHS edition nor the DVD edition.

Summary: Just a review what has been previously said....
Review: This review is for those who have the VHS version and have hesitated to by the directors cut on cd because of some rather precautionary reviews done here at this site. I just bought the cd (having really admired and enjoyed the VHS version) and I can simply say that the cd version is slightly different but every bit as entertaining as the 'original'. The added scenes are nicely done, but are short and DO NOT hurt the flow of the film. As to the loss of a short piece of vocal music that was deleted and is disparagingly remarked upon in earlier review: I found the deletion of what was an obvious plant of a commercial song (probably a studio attempt to help promote the commercialism of the soundtrack) to be an improvement. Great flick on either VHS or cd. Get it.

Summary: Unfortunately, a sad disappointment
Review: Before purchasing this DVD, I read an interview with Michael Mann, in which he stated that his purpose in creating this "director's verson" was to restore some of the "epical scale" that he felt was missing in the original. He wanted to deliver a "bigger, richer" film experience to the audience. Unfortunately, he failed in the effort. The DVD version is a sad disappointment. Scenes have been amplified without compelling reason. For example, early on the young men are playing lacrosse while the British soldier attempts to raise a militia; several seconds of the lacrosse game have been added which appear to serve no useful purpose in the narrative. The visual quality of the film is strangely washed out - gone is the vividness of the theatrical and VHS picture. The continuity of the film seems fitful; the story no longer flows smoothly. And the final scene on the lookout point contains added speech by Chingachgook which, though I am certain was added with the laudable aim of enhancing his character, came across as poorly written and unconvincingly delivered. In other words, there was probably good reason for eliminating it in the original. And there is more bad news for the fan who wants to see those wonderful extra goodies - the behind the scenes footage, the "making of the film" documentary, the cast and crew interviews. There aren't any. This, to me, is one of the great added bonuses of spending the extra money on DVD, but don't look for them in this one. My recommendation is to skip the purchase of this DVD, content yourself with the VHS, and hope that, at some future time, Mr. Mann will decide to try again to give us that bigger, richer experience he desired.

Summary: Great VHS, Horrible DVD
Review: When you read these reviews, make sure you're reading the reviews for the DVD, which is very poor, and not the reviews for the VHS, which is superb. Like many people, I couldn't wait for the DVD of this wonderful movie, but no DVD has ever disappointed me as much as this one. I accept the fact that Mann may have had a different vision for this movie than the commercial version, but it is an inferior version (with which we can simply agree to disagree) but it is also poorly produced technically and that is inexcusable. The DVD should have at least included both Mann's version and the original commercial version. Perhaps one day, someone will wake up and the original version of this movie will be available on DVD, but it isn't at present.

Summary: Total Quality
Review: I am a veteran of "little theatre" and see a movie or play at least once a week --- I have watched some movies several times merely to concentrate on the acting. This movie is a particular favorite of mine, as it is total quality in every aspect --- and, sadly, underrated at the time of release. I will watch it any time someone I know hasn't seen it (have hosted a gathering of three or more to share in those movies that I consider very worthy to be shared --- this definitely being on my "loved that movie" list.)
