Summary: Can someone say, "The Greatest Mobster Flick Of All Time?"
Review: Who knew that this movie could be so good. Ray Liotta gives a performance so good, it makes you want to be a mobster yourself! Robert De Niro also has a good performance as Jimmy "The Gent", but not as good as Joe Pesci(my favorite on-screen gangster). This is what it's all about. So step aside Godfather, the Goodfellas are here!

Summary: The Film is a Classic, but the DVD is a BUST!
Review: The same year Francis Ford Coppola hit the skids with his flawed "Godfather 3," Martin Scorcese reminded us how well-made mob movies are done with "Goodfellas." Here's the story of the rise and fall of a mobster, covering a span of 30 years from the 1950s to the 1980s. Although DeNiro gets top billing in this film, this is really a Ray Liotta movie all the way. It's surprising his career never took off after this movie, for his performance is really good. But while this film is undeniably a classic, the DVD itself is a bust. Although it is slightly over two hours, the film is divided on both sides of the DVD. I refuse to get up off my sofa to flip this disc over when the whole movie could be put on one side. Plus, all we get for features is a trailer. No documentary, no commentary, or anything else. If you have to have this film, you are no worse off getting the VHS tape and waiting for Warners to come out with a deluxe-edition of this great film.

Summary: Explosive
Review: This is quiet literally, one of the very few movies I can sit and watch over and over. With a personal viewing figure now standing at well above 50 times.. you can imagine how highly I rate this.
Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci are fantastic together. Ray Liotta's character seemed to think living the gangsters life was fantastic, at first.. adn there's no doubt after watching it, that many viewers would agree! However, the bad far outweighs the good, as he soon finds out. I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it there.

If anyone who hasn't seen this before, goes and watches it. I'd be interested to hear your opinions on the movie.

Summary: I've always wanted to be a gangster...
Review: It's a classic. De Niro is one of my favorite actors of all time. His performance was great. And all power to Joe Pesci for winning an oscar, for best supporting actor. And Ray Liotta was great also. There was too much chemistry in the movie.

Summary: Great movie, but as for the DVD...
Review: I love this movie; I think it's the best Mob movie of all time, and I am including "The Godfather" in that. OK, that said, this is a really bad DVD issue, and I'm surprised Warner Bros. is still selling it in this state. As noted many times before, it's single sided, and thus the disc is double sided (which means lots of chances to get your fingerprints all over it as you flip it over), but the picture and audio also doesn't look all that great to me (it's about the same as the VHS version, actually). And, as noted, there's no extras. You'd think a movie of this importance and quality would get a much better release, but I guess Warner has better things to do (like worry about how to avoid losing $50 billion in a quarter again.) Still, though, I'm not going to give it one star, because it's a great movie, and flipping the disc over isn't too high a price to pay. Since I don't know of any new version in the works, just buck up and get this. And if a new version comes out, hell, get that too. Just don't wait around for it.

Summary: The Best Film I Have Ever Seen
Review: Martin Scorsese created his definitive masterpiece with this film. GoodFellas has everything and anything I could for in a motion picture, and it is done so well with such enthusiasm, excellence and thought that it boggles the mind. While it might be on a subject that might not be appealing to everyone, it is certainty worth viewing (I would even put it over the Godfather).

The film is about a kid in Brooklyn named Henry Hill, who grows up in the Mafia world not on the inside, but as an outsider looking in, who gets so intrigued by the way they act, the way they get away with anything, everything. That leads Hill in becoming a bus boy, and then working his way up in the world. How Scorsese deals with this material (brought from Nicholas Pillegi's novel which he co-scripted with the director) is different from other directors. He handles it that the man knows the risks, but he doesn't care. Just as long he can be different, not like other average people.

But this couldn't sustain the film alone. It is elevated from exceptional acting by the whole cast: Ray Liotta in a fine breakthrough as the main character as a adult in his rise, and his eventual fall; Robert De Niro in a somewhat overrated yet good role as Jimmy Conway, one of 2 mentors of Hill with a bad attitude yet with charm; Joe Pesci, absolutely breathtaking with one of the most memorable scenes ever at the table telling his joke and being totally insane while still having the courtesy to have fun doing it (Pesci won the only Oscar for the film in America); Lorraine Bracco in also a great breakthrough as Henry's understanding yet angry wife (probably this is what got her noticed to co-star on the HBO show The Sopranos); and Paul Sorvino as the head mafia chieftain Paulie.

Acting helps this film immensely, and of course it is just one part of the film's greatness. The photography is also awesome, with shots going into the copa cabana being fantastically mesmerizing and simple one's like the shot at the dinner table being simple; it is just another part of it.

Martin Scorsese has been able to top them all now. With a story that is unconventional (much like life, for which it's based on), great acting, directing, writing, photography and jokes, this is a movie that was not seen like this before 1990, it astounded audiences (and still does), and nothing like it will ever some around again.

Summary: Get over yourselves, you whiny techno-geeks.
Review: Why would you slight a flawless movie because of the limitations of its format? So what if you have to flip the disc over? Rise up off that couch and turn that bad boy over...the exercise will do you good. Just because Warner Bros. has made some of the worst choices for their DVD releases in the format's short history...that's no reason to slight the movie itself by giving it a one or two star rating.
Stepping off of my soapbox now.
This movie is superb. Fantastic. "Goodfellas" shaped my life, having first seen it when I was 10. It's what made me want to be involved in drama in the first place. The pure jolt of energy that leaps off the screen--big or small--is powerful enough to make even the most ardent 18th century Anthony Hopkins period-drama fan become infused with a zeal for profanity, violence, and pure movement. The epic sweep in "Goodfellas" rivals that of any more "respectable" drama you could think up.
And the cast, what more is there to say? Liotta, with the face of an angel and the mind of a devil. Bobby D, just playing it super-cool and tight. And Joe. Well, nothing really needs to be said about Joe, but to quote George Carlin, another inspiration, "Y'know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. I pray to God to get rid of my annoying neighbor. It doesn't work. Then I started praying to Joe Pesci. In 2 days he was over there with a baseball bat and straightened my neighbor out pretty g-dd-mn fast!!" Take heed, my friends.... take heed.

Summary: Best Mafia Film , Better than Godfather
Review: A very good tale about the Italian Mafia with America's favorite Italian/American actor Robert DeNiro! The story is about a young associate to the mob (Ray Liotta) who works his way up with a trigger happy psycho (Joe Pesci) , a brutal gambler (Robert DeNiro) , his wife (Lorraine Bracco) and a mob boss (Paul Sorvino). Look for Sopranos stars in the movie such as Lorraine Bracco (Dr. Melfi) , Tony Sirico (Paulie) , Vincent Pastore and
a special appearence by Samuel L. Jackson.

Summary: 2 Sided DVD?
Review: First of all let me start off by saying that the 1 star is not for the movie itself. The single star is for the DVD version because the movie is on 2 sides! That's right! Just like a laser disk. When my friend told me it was on two sides I thought there was a widescreen and full screen version on each side, which is very common on older DVD's. But no, halfway through the movie you have to get up and flip the movie to finish watching it. It this a big deal? YES! It is a DVD, the form of media that was supposed to do away with such nonsense. Completely unacceptable! 1 star!
