Summary: Greatest Movie of All-Time!!!!!!!
Review: I've seen this wonderful movie 21 times, so far. I love it more, and more. The story of Jack the 3rd class guy, and Rose the 1st class gal, is very touching and riveting. The power of chemistry between the two are incredible. They really work well together. They captivated me when I first saw the movie. The story's not the only excellent thing about Titanic, but the special effects, too. The effects shown as the ship is sinking is so amazing and breath-taking. It all looks so real. What grabs me the most, is that this is real life. Not Jack and Rose, but the fate of the Titanic is totally real. I'm now a major Titanic fanatic!

Summary: A technically polished mediocrity
Review: I guess all that can be said is that Cameron botched the dialogue in every way that the dialogue can be botched. Add to that cardboard cut-outs for characters and all the cinematographic cliches that could be fit into three hours, and you get an spectacular, and spectacularly shallow, film. It's not all bad, of course. The cinematography _is_ beautiful, the acting is generally acceptable and I agree that the framing device was very well conceived. But this is a very far cry from from the work of art some have pretended it is. In all fairness there were only two of its eleven Oscars that the movie did not deserve: best picture and best director.

I am much heartened to see that there are in fact quite a few people out there who were not taken in by this, judging from the comments here. Still, it did become the most popular movie of all time...

Summary: Too Long, Bad Story
Review: This movie was way too long. The only really good thing about this movie was the costuming and the special effects. Plus the story is completely unbelievable: a person who has never handled an ax in her life can accurately chop a metal chain in two and not remove an arm? :there was room on that raft for both of them. :a street rat cleans up that well and has manners that good? I'll never "revisit" Titanic.

Summary: A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME!!!
Review: All I have to say about TITANIC is that it is too long, plus KATE WINSLET AND LEONARDO DICAPRIO are definatley miscast for thier roles which roles they play I wont say just watch and see. Also I felt that this movie didn't focus on the real people on the ship I believe if it had it would've been a lot better so all I have to say is skip TITANIC. And to JAMES CAMERON all I have to say is STAR WARS THE PHANTOM MEANACE period!!!

Summary: A Tale of Two Movies
Review: I was a Titanic skeptic, and consequently skipped its theatrical showing, a move I regret. This movie would have made for a terrific big-screen experience.

"A Tale of Two Movies" seems an apporpriate subtitle. The reviews presented so far have tended to be quite polarized. I find merit in many of them--on both sides of the fence. This is dependent on one's perspective on the movie. If viewed as a romantic tale, it gives off a great stench. Viewed as a "You were there"-themed epic, it is incredible tour-de-force.

As a love story, Titanic has major shortcomings and falls flat. Yes, the story is very cliched, the sex scene in the car absolutely doesn't belong there, and neither does the profanity or the gratuitous nude scene. As one reviewer aptly pointed out, it doesn't fit in a 1912 setting. DiCaprio's and Zane's characters are more characatures than anything else. Winslet's protrayal is somewhat better, although stunted. The "real" characters (Astor, Guggenheim, Ismay, etc.) are much more believeable in their conduct and actions. Fortunately, their protrayals salvage the storyline from the shortcomings of the major characters.

Titanic's trump card is in it's recreation of the sinking, and all the realism, drama, panic, and terror that accompanied it. The cinematography is unsurpassed compared to any other feature I have seen. Through a mix of live action, effects, and digital imaging, James Cameron and crew really brought the ship back to life, only to let us watch it die before our eyes. The elegant stateliness of the voyage slowly, but surely dissolves into a fearful and terrifying scene as 1500 people are pulled down to a watery grave. I was truly moved when confronted with the sheer scope of the tragedy. One can almost forget the first 100 minutes of this picture, start watching from the moment before the iceberg strike, and still come away with a deeper appreciation of the events of that night.

That aspect of this movie merits 5 stars by itself, but the storyline warrants a 1-star penalty.

Summary: AWFUL
Review: THIS WAS THE ABSOLUTE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN IT WAS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND WE ARE NOW ALL DUMBER SITTING THERE FOR ALMOST 4 HRS AND WATCHING A STUPID MOVIE

Summary: haunting, riveting, emotionally draining, addicting!
Review: Although I waited eons to see this movie, originally not caring whether I saw it or not (hey, everyone knows the ship sinks), thinking Leonardo DiCaprio a teen idol (and I'm much too old to be attracted to that!) I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it when I finally saw it! Good old Leo, even though he IS 15 years my junior, was surprisingly appealing! Go figure! After researching the boat and its sinking, I was impressed at how closely it tried to stay to reality (except for the love story, of course), though it could have stood to add more of the reality of the situation with the stories of the Strausses or the Astors, etc. All in all, I was pleased with the film, its music, and its actors, and am much more addicted to it than I ever thought I would be. What a story!

Summary: The "Big" Picture
Review: Ok, folks, Let's calm down a bit, especially you with the negative reviews. To have such a visceral rejection of this movie's basic plot is in itself a symptom of your own emotional shortcomings. - And no, I'm not a teenage girl. Look, there's some unspectacular acting moments (Did you really want Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger to play the leads?) There's some occasional special effects believability questions. There are even gaps of justification of the story line. But a BILLION dollars at the box office! And they were "mostly" teenage girls? And how many teenage girls are on the "Academy" voting committee? Look at the number of reviews on this webpage- It has often been said that Art becomes great not when it is "good" or "bad", but only when it absolutely cannot be ignored.
