Summary: Being a real father is more than fathering a child
Review: The father (played by Boguslaw Linda) comes home one day to find his wife wants a divorce. He is shocked and upset with this news and wants to mend his marriage. Although he is largely to blame for the fact that his marriage fell apart, he desperately wants to correct his ways. Tato (Daddy) finds the courts are unsympathetic to his desire to play a part in his daughter's life. To make things worse, his mother-in-law helps cause trouble between the couple.The mother (played by Dorota Segda, also starred in Faustina) becomes increasing mentally unstable after she separates from her husband. During the custody trail, she snaps and the court sends her into psychiatric care. Rather than assign custody of the girl to the father, the court gives custody to the mother-in-law who the girl hardly knows. Trying to do the best for his daughter, the father kidnaps her. The father, mother, and mother-in-law all struggle for custody of the girl. I found this to be one of Boguslaw Linda's best films. Cezary Pazura offered a few moments of comic relief in this otherwise dramatic film. Those that watched Wajda's "Man of Iron" will recognize Krystyna Janda also plays a role in "Tato" (both Janda and Linda were in "Man of Iron"). "Tato" is directed by Maciej Slesicki. The film is spoken in Polish, but has English subtitles. The film was made in 1995 and is 125 minutes in length. I would say the film is rated "PG-13" by American standards.
