Summary: Touching, With Surprising Humor.
Review: Meet Joe Black is a wonderful movie about relationships. It investigates the depths of friendship, the intricacies of family--and that most special time of first love. It can teach even the most cynical about the wonder of emotion, if they are not closed off or afraid to investigate how they really feel.Anthony Hopkins is, as always, stellar. As Bill Parish, he is understandably stunned to realize his time on earth is up, but he gamely tries to leave the world behind him a better place. Brad Pitt is marvelous as the easy-going man who becomes Joe Black. As Joe, Pitt has a difficult job of showing a character uncomfortable in human form, but gradually becoming more at ease, even coming to love certain things about being human. At the same time, he is Death, an entity who rules us all and does not accept interference from others. Pitt carries it off wonderfully, giving Joe Black a sensitivity and caring we all wish for. Claire Forlani is the weakest link. Her portrayal of Susan is just too soft, considering the conflicts in her life: born into luxury and yet choosing a life as a doctor (and not in some cushy clinic). Still, moments with her father and Joe, help make us forget any inconsistencies. Meet Joe Black is touching and yet with surprising humor. Three hours may be a little long for some, but that seems to be the trend lately. I saw it--twice--in packed theaters, and nobody was restless. The soundtrack is super, and I'm counting the days for the video.

Summary: Love can be found even in Death.
Review: This could very well be the best of my top 5 favorites. Along with excelent performances by Anthony Hokins and Brad Pitt, and original idea that takes us away from the traditional love story can be found in this movie. Some lines in this film will leave you questioning everything you ever considered to be love, and make you will to risk everything for it. Gripping, and at times magical, Meet Joe Black is a movie for anyone who knows what true love is.

Review: Slow, boring, and pathetic sums it up. Brad Pitt can't act for his life and the whole movie wasn't acted well. Anthony Hopkins is my favorite actor and perhaps that was the only reason I went to see this pathetic excuse for a movie. If it were possible to give no stars that is what this movie would get. No, wait, it would be a negative four.

Summary: Question: To be or not?
Review: Based on a once-popular play called DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY but using that only as a platform for stepping beyond it...this compelling film is a moving examination of issues surrounding not so much our deaths as our lives and what we are willing to do with them. Critics--conditioned perhaps by the current pyrotechnical fad where everything on screen must explode every four minutes--registered acute impatience with its pace and length. [I once saw it with a hyper-active adolescent who made it clear he didn't belong there.] The point I found is that--confronted by those swimming pool size eyes and waiting for answers with no dialogue or motion to distract me--I became free to consider the questions of who and what was represented. The character who took the name "Black" never identified himself as other than extra-terrestrial...nor as "Death" in any of our familiar metaphors. [When pressed, he resorts to the threat of having the power to kill...which he happens to share with each of us.] He leaves us with the central problem once driving young Hamlet: "Is this an honest ghost?" The well-acted courage of the other participants in the face of this uncertainty is instructive. See it several times.

Summary: Superb Movie!
Review: I haven't seen a movie this good in years! The only movie that even comes close is "Somewhere in Time" and that was nearly twenty years ago. This movie is so much better in terms of complex relationships and interaction between characters. It's sort of a tapestry of stories woven together to form a masterpiece...and the music is fantastic! This is a romantic movie, but not a tear jerker that makes you confuse sadness and love. It has an unusual concept of death wanting to experience life and then finding himself falling in love. Susan is stangely attacted to "Joe" (death) even thought she doesn't know much about him. He's so mysterious and quiet about where he is from and what kind of work he does. The settings are very picturesque and rich with color. The acting is so well done among the main characters you get the feeling you're watching a play rather than a movie. Hopkins is great as ever. Forlani is surprisingly good and quite natural playing Susan. Pitt is impressive playing roles as Joe and the guy from the coffee shop. Finally a role where Brad Pitt plays a likeable character and he does it so well! The love scene is like no other I've ever seen in a movie. Beautifully tender and passionate shown in extreme closeup so you can see the facial expressions of both. The lighting, music and acting all come together to create a powerful moment in the story. The movie's message conveys so much about life and the ones we love. It also communicates a strong message about passion, rapture and finding someone who makes you feel alive. What a feel good movie -- makes you wish it would never end!

Summary: Death at its finest
Review: I do believe this is one of the rare movies that every member of the cast gave a stellar performace. But applause must go to Pitt for his portrayal as both Death and the human Joe Black. The subtle changes in his character was performed masterfully. Forlani did well as the youngest daughter of the media mogul Parish, going from daddy's little girl to seductress. But besides it, this movie also raises some deeper issues, like highlighting the small things we take for granted in our everyday life. Do make an effort to watch it, you'll find yourself profoundly touched by it.

Summary: So well done - what a wonderful movie!!
Review: "Meet Joe Black" and Martin Brest should have beennominated for Oscars for this wonderful work. It has a great story,acting, and music. The story conveys the similarity between being on vacation and experiencing life with all its adventures. It's a little long, but you don't notice because it's easy to get involved in the story and you don't want it to end. The beautiful Claire Forlani as Susan is superb. I was in awe of her performance. For such a young actress she shows real maturity in her delivery. Brad Pitt is offbeat as the two guys she meets, but he's very entertaining too. He played both parts extremely well. I know some people don't take him seriously as an actor, but he definitly deserves credit for his performance in MJB. He appears to have fun with the role of death and falling in love with Susan. He's really mysterious and secretive, yet likeable at the same time. I liked the character Drew too. He added some humor with his sophisticated wise cracks. Jeffrey Tambor who played Quince was also good. He played such a suck-up. He would say anything to be liked. In some ways, this movie had something to do with his character versus the more influential characters who had more powerful personalities. Susan starts out being Drew's girlfriend and her father gives her such wonderful advice about finding passion and rapture in her love life. Susan slowly transforms from a person "trying to be agreeable" to someone going after what she wants and willing to express what she truly feels. I loved the movie ending - such a celebration of life. It makes you realize that if you've lived your life to it's fullest, then you can accept when it's your time to go.
