Summary: Hellish
Review: This is one of the best war movies I've seen, and one of the best period. Sure, the movie is long, but I don't think it's overly long. The Russian Roulette scenes are the most horrific and difficult parts to watch of the movie. Highly recommended to all fans of drama or war movies.

Summary: The emperor has no clothes
Review: Here is one of those "classics" that everyone is afraid of saying anything bad about. This movie doesn't for one second belong in AFI's Top 100. It is overly long (right at 3 hours) and is only compelling for a few minutes of the 180 long ones the viewer must endure. It takes an almost an hour and a half to get from PA. to Vietnam. Yes we meet the characters but do we really need to spend so much time learning who they are. The wedding scene last longer than some weddings I have been to in real life. And I'm sorry, they could not have picked a more disturbing theme on which to base a movie. Yet just because it is disturbing, does not mean it can support a 3 hour movie. Boring.

Summary: From awful to classic
Review: The first hour and a half of this film is rediculously boring and long. It all revolves around some friends going off to war and one of them is getting married. The whole wedding seen goes on and on and on and on and on........It seems endless.

All of a sudden the friends are in Vietnam and are captured by the Viet Cong and forced to play Russian Roulette with eatch other. Than they escape and the rest of the film deals with the aftermath of what they went through. This whole part is wonderful. Its a shame they couldn't edit it a little bit at the begining.

Great acting from DeNiro and Walken. All the other performances are just ok. Worth watching once but I don't think I could sit through the begining again.

Summary: Makes a point.
Review: The details in this film are a bunch of crap. The film overall does very well in showing what that war did to the people that served in it, and to the people that waited for them back home.

Summary: Offensive to just about Everyone
Review: Chimino and this waste of film stock were so over-hyped.

This film has no real story, no real message, and is in fact offensive to those who fought, supported, or protested the war.

This is by far the worst film in the 1979-1980 stretch in which several real masterpieces were released. Might I suggest Being There, The Shining, Raging Bull, or Atlantic City? Even The Empire Stikes Back, as silly and pretentious as it is, is 10 times better than this senseless film.

Summary: Fasinating Wartime Epic
Review: This Horrific masterpiece of modern cinema comes full circle in telling the tale of these brave fighting men. The dark overtones that truely opitimize the hellish underbelly that is war at it's utmost. De Niro's superb method acting does this Comino classic pure justice. The first roulette scene, in which Mr.De Niro revolts against the prevese antagonist that try to devilshly perswade him to atempt the unimaginable, were in turn he uses the weapon to attack the Capturers and carry his friend (Walken) to a waiting rescue chopper. Streep's stunning "Post-war dipressive wife" performance is real and sometimes almost frighting. True to hummanity this film was at times distrubing for anyone that diverted the fight, and sertinly those who saddly didn't. But it is a must-see for those that like War Drama as well as "FILM", in general. Thank You.

Summary: A beautiful film
Review: Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter is a classic that certainly deserves its praises. It's a war film although those looking for battles better look elsewhere. This movie is complete emotion. The performances from Robert de Niro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep were worthy of their oscar nominations.

In comparing The Deer Hunter with four of the other well known war classics, it's not as good as Saving Private Ryan because it lacked the complete anti-war feeling that Ryan had and it wasn't quite as horrific. The Deer Hunter was almost as good as Platoon and is a notch or two above Apocalypse Now. It's definitely much better than the overrated Full Metal Jacket.

Summary: totally unbelivable and unintresting
Review: THis film hardly does justice to vetrans of the Vietnam war becaues it exploits what happend to them and then plays it in complety unrealistic ways( I know becaues my father is one) Above from the story unrealistic tones, the film is hardly intresting in any cinematic terms. Every scene is draged out way to long and every charter is carboard or worse. THe film musical score is equally hokey. The film also is done in by weak writing and genrally bad acting. ( espacilly di nero which is shocking) Wlakens ok but nothing speical. The story telling is badly disjointed and tells a secen from one to many angles. Any one who claimed they went throught a similar story has bowed to waht the media thinks hapend in vietnam. I

Summary: Anyone who has lived a war can connect to this movie.
Review: I have lived a war. I wasn't in the front, no, and I never played the russian roulette. But the feelings are the same. When you struggle to keep your mind clear when all what is around you has fallen down, when you try to keep all those you love together, and when you face the loss of a friend's sanity or life, all because of war, a movie like The Deer Hunter makes an impact on you.

It is also the way this movie shows you how simple people, who just want to enjoy life and live it carelessly, enter a war. How people who have followed traditions, and have lived in a closed community, all of a sudden see themselves thrown in the middle of a chaotic world, where values and traditions make no sense.

It is also the way war affects us. It makes us grow faster, makes us treasure life...and that scene where robert de niro finds himself facing the deer in the end and thinks twice before shooting him is so moving.

I loved this movie. I have watched it several times. It is, without any doubts, for me, the best movie I can relate to.
