Summary: A very dark comedy for those who enjoy political wit
Review: After watching Major Payne, I thought I would try another Damon Wayans' movie, but found this one a great disappointment. The cast were all star, and the story line was good, but I think comically it could have done a bit more. Still a good movie, but certainly not anything the actors who starred in it would be boasting about.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A classic sports comedy
Review: I can't understand Leonard Maltin's lack of enthusiasm for this movie, which features what may be the best work yet from Samuel Jackson and Jeff Goldblum. The writers, obviously inspired by the Tyson-McNeeley fight, offer us the anti-Rocky, the story of a nobody pitted against the world boxing champion, and the crafty promoter who tries to con the public into believing the outcome is in doubt and buying tickets to see them fight. This film did badly at the box office and caught me a little off guard the first time I saw it because it is so completely cynical, every character is a fraud. But once you realize there are no heroes in this story and accept that it is hilarious. Every time I see it the film gets funnier. The writers might want to do a sequel about women boxers. As women's boxing websites and newspaper coverage make clear, in women's boxing horrible mismatches in which an unprepared gal is fed to an experienced pro in the ring just to fill a fight card are commonplace and a continuing scandal.

Review: I was one of the 3 or so people who actually saw this film in the theatre and I enjoy it more every time I see it. It's an excellent, funny, satirical look into the world of professional boxing where athletes, who risk their physical health and financial future, are treated like commodities for the gain of promoters, who risk nothing and always get the big payoff. The flamboyant promoter (Samuel L. Jackson) deftly uses white America's obsession/anger with African-American dominance in sports to produce a payday as the media plays a willing pawn in the game. All of the performances in this movie are excellent but Peter Berg deserves a special mention.

Summary: I'm With Tony - Why No DVD?
Review: In my opinion, this is one of the funniest movies made during the 1990's.

Sure it has some racist overtones, but we all need to be able to laugh at ourselves sometimes...

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Kinda funny but pretty racist
Review: In one of his best performances Jackson just steals the show in this otherwise decent comedy. As a Don King style promoter Jackson electrifies many scenes with his PT Barnum huckster act. This film is worth watching for his contribution alone. The other cast members do a decent job and the story is is funny but Jackson is the main reason to check this out.

Summary: Finally...
Review: Make that 4 people who saw it in the theatre. This is just one of those movies that somehow got passed over. I've worn out my VHS copy. I've seen thousands of movies once. I've seen this movie more times than I can count. Scenes and dialog from "THE GREAT WHITE HYPE" have become part of my comedy repetoire...that nobody ever gets...

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Finally...
Review: Okay the DVD itself isn't so great with only minimal features but why I give this 4 stars is because I waited FOREVER for this thing to finally be released. It is one of my all-time favorite comedies and I laugh so much everytime I see it. It is about time that this was finally released and I say it rules!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: why isn't this on DVD?
Review: The only thing that could make this movie better is it being on DVD.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Pretty Good Satire
Review: this Film Isn't as Strong as it Should or COuld Be.Still Samuel L.Jackson Doing His Best Don King Take is very Funny.Damon Wayans does Good Here as well.with a Stronger Story this Would Have Been a Must See.Still it is Entertaining.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Good Nights Laugh
Review: This is one of the funniest movies i have ever seen. All of its main actors (Samuel Jackson, John Lovitz, Peter Berg, Damon Wayans, Jamie Fox, and Jeff Goldblum) are great! If you are a boxing fan this movie will be much more interesting, but if you're not a boxing fan don't fret you will still get a good laugh. Samuel plays a more extreme version of Don King and other events in the movie make you wonder if the boxing world really is this like this in some ways. My favorite scene-the mispronunciation of Chevy Brougham!
