Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A true love story
Review: I caught the last hour of this movie on television completely by accident. I am an ardent letter writer..so as soon as I figured out the plot, I was hooked. The characters themselves catch you..you need to know what happens to them. This movie does not have what I would consider the typical hollywood love ending. Everything is not perfect, and you ache from it. The actors make you feel what they are feeling. The love, hate, indifference, and fear. I would recommend this movie to everyone. Honest.

Summary: Touching and poignant.
Review: The reason behind my not rating this movie 5 stars is that Steven Weber is not really up to the task of such an emotionally demanding role. The story starts up with a Senator (Steven Weber) returning from the funeral of an old friend (Laura Linney). After his colleagues and servants leave he opens up a box that was delivered by mail and discovers all the letters and postcards that he sent to his one true love whose funeral he just attended. Near this time in the film Laura Linney's character fades into the picture, a fairly cheesy effect that would have been better served had she simply poked her head out from behind a curtain and announced her imaginary presence through the recitation of the letter she sent him. He has saved all of those letters as well, and it is through the sharing of these letters that the movie unfolds. It is a fairly unique idea to tell the story in this way, and it is surely as effective on the stage (as it was originally intended) as it is here. After adjusting to how the story will be told it becomes much easier to enjoy the characters and their letters and encounters of the past, some shown through fluid transistions from various locations at various times in their lives. They first meet back in grade school and as time passes each goes through phases of their respective lives clinging to one another in spirit through a subtlely engaging correspondence. By the end of the movie I wanted so badly to cry with Steven Weber's character, but he provided little motivation other than reciting his beautiful monologue in a professional manner and "no tears?" That scene could have been so much more. Laura Linney, her character a veritable polar opposite here, shows an incredible range of emotions and is the absolute highlight of this film. It would be lovely to see her performance again and again. Not only is she gorgeous beyond words, with those adorable dimples besides, but she has tremendous talent as an actor. Her performance is reason enough to own this film. This film could have been amazing if Steven Weber, the conservative Senator with a repressed emotional attachment for all those years, had simply broken down sobbing in the privacy of his study. If that had happened, this film would have garnered a 5-star rating from me as well. An emotional collapse would have brought down the Heavens. Alas. As it stands, this is a romantic film with a single phenomenal performance from Laura Linney.

Summary: I fell in love with this movie when I was 18!
Review: This was a movie I first caught when it came on TV five years ago. Something told me to tape it, but I didn't and I've regretted it since. I love this movie so much. It's the kind of classic love story that you never hear about anymore. They don't show these kinds of movies with characters embroiled in a passionate yet realistic romance. Even if this love story doesn't turn out the way typical romances do, it didn't give me false hope about romance in general, but it still helped me to believe in deep love. The kind of love few see in their lives. This movie proves that love can be great no matter how imperfect it is. Watch this movie and you'll get that feeling even if it is just for a moment.
