Rating: Summary: The most inventive original movies of our time Review: Boggie nights is an astounding achivement of originality and breathtaking performances. It is a movie that boasts stunning characters and a wonderful direction. Clearly one of the best movies of the decade.
Rating: Summary: Good film, excellent performances. Review: The movie was good and it showed the porn and sex buisness quite well. The movie has many sub plots and they all work nicely to create that daring atmosphere. Mark Wahlberg is a charming actor just like in Fear and don't beleieve ignorants people's comments that he can't act. Juliane Moore was good as the maternal porn queen as well as the "rollergirl" Heather Graham. The movie reminded a lot of Pulp Fiction and Casino, and if you liked Pulp Fiction then you'd like this even better(I did). If Pulp Fiction is on the AFI list, then why not this?
Rating: Summary: Booige Nights: A Racy, Exciting, Epic Film Review: Mark Wahlberg deftly guides himself through this mesmerizing epic about a tight-knit porn "family" in the 1977 San Fernando Valley. As Eddie Adams, he is approached by adult filmmaker Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds, in one of the most subtle and finest performances of his career) while washing dishes at a swanky Reseda disco nightclub. He proves a success as "Dirk Diggler" on the tarnished screen of pornography, though several missteps fueled by egoism lead ultimately to his downfall. Director Paul Thomas Anderson borrowed heavily from numerous directors in his filming techniques, though the DVD's director's commentary segment inexplicably doesn't mention Martin Scorsese. From the opening nightclub sequence that closely mirrors the infamous "And Then He Kissed Me" sequence in GoodFellas to skillfully quick and flashy edits (not to mention the familiar though well-played anchor storyline of an ambitious kid done in by stupidity and drugs), Anderson certainly borrows (though honorably) Scorsese's epic storytelling technique, especially involving subject matter about which most viewers seem outwardly skiddish. Wahlberg's performance is a tour-de-force, as is Reynolds'. Julianne Moore skillfully pitches in as the maternal porn queen Amber Waves, and amusing side characters are completed in a glittering ensemble cast that includes Heather Graham, William H. Macy, Don Cheadle, and John C. Reilly. The 10-minute "Sister Christian" drug scene near the conclusion of the film featuring a wigged-out Alfred Molina is not to be missed. Although John C. Reilly's face does not need to be seen in the corner of the screen as Dirk spaces out for 30 seconds during "Jessie's Girl". Watch the film in full frame, and see the difference. Superb performances and swift pacing make this 135-minute film move just a bit faster, and artful directing make the racy and often hilarious story one of the best movies of the decade.
Rating: Summary: AVOID THE DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY ON THE DVD Review: A great film which has been admirable transfered to DVD. I would avoid the director's commentary though with its foul and juvenile language. Such things as "Hey, S---t man, I studied F-----G Fellini to make this film", or words to that effect..
Rating: Summary: I Gave It A Second Chance Review: I love this movie. I saw Boogie Nights on tape the same night I saw Ulee's Gold. I thought Ulee's Gold was better. About 6 months later a used copy of Boogie Nights was available at the video store. I figured it was a decent enough movie to be worth the money so I got it. After seeing it again I fell in love with this movie. I don't know why I wasn't as impressed with it the first time, I loved Saving Private Ryan out of the box and this movie is just as good. I love the extended tracking shots, and the coffee shop scene is truly great. P.T. Anderson uses the back of Dirk's and Rollergirl's heads to block the audience's view of Jack and Amber alternately when the moment calls for it. He FORCES you to see the face of who he wants you to watch at key times in the dialogue. Look at that scene again and watch how he isolates for purpose. Incredible technique. When I got my DVD player Boogie Nights was my first purchase. The extras are very cool (love the del. scenes and comment.) and the widescreen version adds as much as any Sci-Fi/Special effects movie. I didn't see this movie in the theatre so the choreographed disco scene seems so much better to me now. Also the full screen version does not show the expressions on Reed Rothchild's face when the camera lingers on Dirk's face in the drug deal scene. Other scenes also benefit from the extra screen size. The acting is fantastic (I could go on and on about it), the direction is fantastic (same here), the soundtrack is fantastic (especially the timing and volume of the songs)- I cannot think of a weak link in this movie. It just works and works exceedingly well. P.T. Anderson and crew have created a masterpiece. Through P.T.'s commentaries he really tries to let you know what filming this movie was like. He sounds like he had a great time making this film. I wish I could have been on the set and helped make this movie. Do not believe the hype that this is a porno flick (the sex is implied more than it is seen). I highly recommended this film. It truly is one of my 5 favorite films of all time.
Rating: Summary: woooooah! Review: I never expected this movie to be any good when i rented, but how wrong i was. Boogie Nights is definitely one of the best examples of 90s film making. From its funky opening to its happy ending the films brilliant camera work and excellent 70s/80s soundtrack really pushes the viewer right into the picture. Many will see this film as too long, but trust me, the film never gets boring; the fire cracker drug deal has to be the one of the most tense scenes in film history.
Rating: Summary: Absorbing to watch, quite poignant at times Review: It's a touch too long - the movie, that is, not the appendage that made Dirk Diggler famous - but this is a still a movie that keeps your attention throughout. The characters are very realistically drawn and - like those horrid clothes and hairstyles! - evoke the atmosphere of the 1970s extremely well. It is in no way a voyeuristic movie. The measure of its success is that the viewer is compelled to sympathise with poor Dirk. This is also Burt Reynolds' best movie since Deliverance.
Rating: Summary: A Very Good Film Review: This is a very enjoyable film. Boogie Nights is very involving and is also engaging. The acting is very good, especially Mark Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds in their roles. I've seen this movie more than once, and it never ceases to fascinate me. It's a very good portrayal of people during the 70s and early 80s. People shouldn't let the plot keep them from viewing this. A movie that's this good has no problem being long. If the film is good enough, two hours or more is no problem. One of the best films I've seen in the last year or so. Give it a view. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Being a female that lived it, it was awesome. Review: I, having known Thomas,Paul in his past and having not liked him much personally, thought he did an extrordonary film. Thomas exemplified not only the era via 1978....of the erotica film industry, but he created a film that depicted precedence, process, pain, perseverance, vanity, and shear gut and the ugliness of the time. I agree w/ the 1st review that the male perspective what greatly presented.I would add that what should ensew is in like of the same, a/the female perspective of entering/exiting the erotic industry unscathed.I should add, my opinion of honoring Thomas on his creative process in presenting a true movie that depicts mostly what erotica was about at that time. From one that was there, in the clutches, enjoyed it/hated it & moved on......The Female Story.
Rating: Summary: One of the Key Movies of the 90's. Review: Amazon reviewers are comparing this unfavorably to "Goodfellas" and "Pulp Fiction" -- why? If you liked those two, why not this one? I can agree with the criticism of the "guns a-blasting" scene near the end, but I forgive this immaturity when considering the brilliant build-up leading up to it: the edgy wait for the drug deal to finish up; the Chinese kid inexplicably setting off firecrackers (indoors!); the cheesy "Night Ranger" and Rick Springfield tunes, which the moronic drug-buyer guy sings along with (incorrectly). And there's that long pause in the middle of this madness, during which the camera rests on Wahlberg's weary face. Gradually, we see his survival instincts light up his eyes, and then of course he tries to get his buddies to leave. I swear this scene should be studies in film school. It's one of the many pleasures found in "Boogie Nights". Key films of the 90's? Sure, "Goodfellas", "Pulp Fiction", "Breaking the Waves" (for stylistic considerations and the Dogma 95 debate), and a few others. Add "Boogie Nights" to this list -- a film that may remind you of those others, but, in my opinion at least, for the right reasons. It will grow in stature over time . . . and grow . . . and grow . . . and grow. . . .BTW, I personally perfer "Feel My Heat" to "You Got the Touch". "FEEL, FEEL, FEEL, FEEL MY HEAT!" Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
