Summary: Truth less painful than lies
Review: A beautifully shot, intriguing story about two brothers living with a false pretense of how their father died. They have the truth slowly revealed to them with a complete but not necessarily predictable ending. It would be much better if people would deal with the less painful truth than devestating lies. Director Karl Kozak uses a nice blend of veteran actors with some promising newcomers. Jason Widener plays one of the brothers. Story has it that he was plucked from a "cattle call," line and eventually got the part. He is a definite "diamond in the rough." So is this film.

Review: I loved this movie and I'm hard to please. The acting and story were very well done. I was just wondering if it was based on a true story. I live in Pennsylvania coal country and have known of several cave-ins like the one in the film. It's surprising that we don't see more films like this.

Summary: Good Mystery, Fine Acting
Review: I saw this film at a special premier in Pittsburg, near where the film was shot in a little coal-mining town. I liked it a lot then, and I'm glad to see it is coming out on video.... The story has a suspenseful plot--a little confusing in the middle, but it wraps up nicely at the end. What really impressed me was the acting by some newcomers like Tyler Christopher, Jason Widener, and Jacqueline Aries (hot!) as well as by some old pros like Sally Kirkland and Jack Connelly.I would recommend this film as a purchase or a rental when you're in the mood for a good, old-fashioned storyline with good acting behind it.

Summary: Powerful Story
Review: Like few movies these days, "Out of Black" takes the time and energy to develope intricate, real-life characters. The living, breathing, tangible kind that keep you wanting more. The effect merely services the plot. Just inside the second act, the story sweeps us up and pulls us along, effortlessly. The principle protagonist (Cole/Christopher), displays and charisma reminiscent of the young, sexy Brando from "A Street Car Named Desire". His portrayal here feels so simple and so natural, we forget it's fiction. Ensemble casts rarely work this well, especially on this many levels. If you grew up in a small town - you know these people. Anyone that feels lost, is from the city. This the kind of quality film you rarely see anymore in this age of special effects and runaway car chases. In other words, "Out of Black" is a powerful piece of storytelling.

Review: OUT OF THE BLACK is an awesome little noirish suspense film. Well shot, well directed, good solid cast (Jack Conley & Tyler Christopher are standout) - full of twists & turns & dark, hidden, small town secrets. Had a blast watching it!
