Summary: WARM, WONDERFUL MOVIE
Review: THE SUBJECT MATTER IS VERY GOOD, BUT THE MAGIC IS HOW THE MOVIE WON'T LET YOU TURN AWAY. IT SEEMS TO DRAW YOU IN AND KEEP YOU INTERESTED TO THE VERY END.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Not exceptional, but Good
Review: This film is strictly Hollywood hype. A child showing all the symptoms of being autistic is miraculously cured by the actions of her mother, as she heroically stands up to: a) child welfare workers; b) physicians and/or psychotherapists with many years of experience dealing with autistic children; and c) common sense.

Here is Kathleen Turner snatching her autistic child away from these screaming meanies, and finding her own cure for her daughters autism, although she refuses to learn anything about the disease she most unrealistically cures.

This movie slaps parents of autistic children in the face with its simplistic Hollywood style cures for a most difficult medical problem.

Summary: This is not a movie about Autism
Review: This is a about a child disturbed by the death of her father and who is told that she should not cry about it and also that her father is in the moon, a fantasy created in the mind of the child trying to thereafter trying to reach him there. One reviewer thought it was about autism, which it was not. It seems that autism has become a generalization for anything people don't understand. The mother of the child doesn't accept the conventional methods of psychology and uses her own intelligence to "decode" the puzzle of the child's disturbance and succeeds to help her to come out of her fantasy of her father being on the moon where he went after he died. It is a wonderful portrayal of a mother who won't give up and sets out to look at her daughter's disturbance in a new light, using what could be called modern shamanism to recreate the dilemma where the child can see the futility of her actually being able to get to the moon to see her father. This movie is a must see!

Summary: journey to a world adults unknown
Review: this is a very special film that describes a world that unknown to almost every adult. sally apparently has a different feeling than her mother towards the death of her father. instead of thinking he was dead, sally beleives her father just lived to another place where words are unnecessary. her silence and climbing to the trees or the roof dont show signs of autism, but a reaction towards things around her through her own inner world. i found a lot of kids have the ability of creating things like sally does in the film that we never think of. they have their own languages and private world where adults' ways can not work. it is interesting to see kathleen finally reach out sally's world and prove she is not really autistic.

Summary: Bittersweet story
Review: This is a wonderful story about parents and children, and I will say...this is NOT about a drug trip...This is a story about a little girl who never got to say goodbye to her father when he died. The journey she travels is heavily influenced by her spending early years of her life in South America, even though it takes on the appearance of autism. There is irrefutable evidence that children of American parents who spend the first few impressionable years in another culture are heavily influenced. The mom and the older brother were not as influenced because they were past that special age. Anyway, the resolution of the story is so touching that I openly wept--and I do not usually cry at movies. Hooray for the mom who figured it all out. Since seeing this movie, I have become a father with a daughter of my own. I will have to see it again to see how it moves me now.

Summary: the more you watch it the more you will LOVE it
Review: This is one of my all time favorite movies. A psycological intreague with No violence, sex or human depravity. (seriously) you can actually watch it with kids, though it may be over little ones heads. it is completely kid safe, no nudity, swearing(i dont think) or inapropriate content of any kind.

It is a REAL story, with unexpected twists and turns exploring the mysterious inner workings of a child in mourning. It has wonderfully developed characters, including the kids( they arent here to be cute, they actually are required to act) you might like them. You dont know how this movie will end, my sugestion, dont read the back of the box, i usually find it misleading. definitely worth having in your video library, but if your not sure, rent it first, you will want a copy of your own. This movie is beautifully filmed, the visuals are fantastic and it is wonderfully edited. i wish i could find more like it. This is one of those movies that you never hear about when it hit the box office, if it was ever there, and then find it years after its video release when searching blockbuster for something slightly redeeming, are intreagued, rent it half expecting disapointment, watch it, love it and wonder how on earth you never heard of it. especially when its staring: Kathleen Turner, Tommy Lee Jones, and Park Overall.

if you dont love it the first time, watch it again, i still find something new and surprising each time i watch it.

Summary: A Story That Makes You Think
Review: This is one of my favorite movies. Though it is not always easy to understand the first time around, the movie brings up some poignant issues about autism, parenting, and art. It is one of the few films that looks at autism from a different standpoint, trying to reach the child within by journeying to the child's world. The actors bring this challenging subject matter to life in the modern world. A must see for educators, parents, doctors, and anyone else that deals with children. A truly unique film!
