Summary: Wonderful family entertainment
Review: It's difficult to find a film that the whole family can enjoy that's not immature, trite, or completely contrived. Luckily, this sports fantasy is one of a few that doesn't disappoint, and any movie with Burt Lancaster and James Earl Jones is, for me, a real treat. "Field of Dreams" is a warm-hearted story that doesn't go overboard (at least too often) with the syrup, and I found it highly entertaining from start to finish.

I do agree (somewhat) with the Sept 16th review (Roesalkas3) that a more realistic treatment of Joe Jackson was portrayed in "Eight Men Out", however, these are two entirely different films--one a fantasy that is centered on family, love, and trust...the other a drama of the 1919 Chicago Whitesox (blacksox) scandal.

"Field of Dreams" has so much to like and very little to criticize. It's a film treated with tenderness and humor, and works on all cylinders. Between 1 and 10, this fine film gets a solid 8. People who love this motion picture should also see "Searching for Bobby Fischer", one of the best (if not THE best) films of its kind.

Summary: My favourite movie of all time.
Review: It's so above favourite that when I talk of favourite movies I simply set it aside cause I'll know who'll win. It's also a plus to actually visit the farm this movie was shot at. Nice summer days do just fine. Although it might actually look kewl in the fall. :)

Summary: This film does not speak to the mind; It pierces the HEART..
Review: This film is one that I consider a CLASSIC. The film centers around 'baseball', yet in all truth, has nothing to do with baseball. I have seen this film at least 7 or 8 times; and every time I find a 'new' message I may have missed before. There is love. There is the bond of FAMILY. There is the message of forgiveness and hope. There is a call for one to follow ones dreams..There is FRIENDSHIP. There is the message of BLIND FAITH, that inspires one to believe in the message of love, hope, and dreams;no matter what any one else may think. There is comraderie between friends. But most of all...I find this film almost teaches the message of LIFE, LOVE and SACRIFICE...;. especially when the doctor left HIS dream to save Ray's little girl... It is essentially a film that teaches what we, as the human race should be AWARE of LIFE and that life is LOVE, HOPE, FORGIVENESS, AND SACRIFICE TOO. It goes to show you that good movies DO NOT have to have profanity, or sex to make an excellent movie. Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, fit their characters perfectly also ! Those reviews that people wrote blasting this film surely must have hard hard hearts.. I believe..no..I KNOW this is a wonderful, and beautiful film that will be seen for years to come.

Summary: In a Word: Overrated
Review: Solid movie that has become incredibly popular. Unfortunately, a lot of this film is sentemental crap. If you want to see a movie featuring Shoeless Joe, watch Eight Men Out, the greatest baseball film of them all. I was sickened when Shoeless Joe came to bat against Kevin Costner's character. Hello -- Shoeless Joe did not bat right-handed! He was a lefty. Either the morons who made this film didn't realize that, or Ray Liotta is too pathetic of an actor to learn to bat left-handed. This isn't even Costner's best baseball film. Bull Durham is infinitely better. Don't get me wrong -- this is a decent movie, but it ain't a classic.

Summary: Cheap sentimental manipulation
Review: I was horrified at how effectively Field of Dreams manipulates the viewer by using a sentimental plot to wring tears and feel-good. Who could resist loving such a boo-hoo, oh-my-papa whitewash?? Definitely worth watching to see the dark and powerful side of film making.

Summary: One of the best DVD's for your money!
Review: I love this movie! ...there, that's done. NOW. The real issue. This is a FANTASTIC DVD with a lot of GREAT bonus features, which in my mind is the TRUE making of a great DVD. I was pleasantly surprised by the "Field of Dreams Scrapbook", which is an extensive behind-the-scenes section lasting about 80 minutes (almost as long as the movie itself!), with VERY interesting interviews with Costner, Madigan, the director, the baseball advisor, the composer James Horner, Tim Busfield, the production designer, Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster, novelist W.P. Kinsella, James Earl Jones, and on and on. It just keeps getting better and more interesting as it goes on. The director reveals LOTS of interesting tidbits about the making of the movie, and there's some really heart-warming interviews with the cast and crew. If you're a DVD purist, you can't miss with this one. Oh, and the movie gets me every time. One of the best "male" movies, in my opinion.

Summary: Simply one of the best movies of all time!
Review: Two or three times a year my family puts the "Field of Dreams" video in the machine and watches it as a family. It never fails to move and inspire us. A movie classic!

Summary: My Favorite Movie
Review: Regardless of all the wonderful movies available to us, all the sound effects, moving story lines, great performances, I've not found one that affects my husband, son and I like this one. Interesting reading the comments, what people take from this movie. We simply believe it's the way life should be lived, the use of time is exquisite. The casting of the roles was perfect ( yes we absolutely love James Earl Jones regardless of the role he plays in any movie ). This is undoubtedly Kevin Costner and Burt Lancaster's best performance. Please watch it with an open heart. We watch it at least four times a year, can recite the lines and still are moved every time. Enjoy!!

Summary: Baseball ascends to myth!!!
Review: The DVD mastering is excellent - the cascading fields of Iowa are beautifully rendered.

The Dolby Surround soundtrack is clean and full.

This is a wonderful film. Full of sentiment (not sentimental) and unfeigned delight. The performances are as direct and straight-forward as the rows of corn on Ray Kincella's land.

I am not a great baseball fan, however, after viewing this film I was caught under the spell of the game.

Twice in the film characters ask Kevin Costner's character, "is this heaven?" His reply each time is, "no, its Iowa!" They reply, "I could have sworn it was heaven!"

I could have also!

Summary: A Timeless Gem That Will Transcend Generations For Years.
Review: When I first saw this film nearly ten years ago it made me cry. At the time I was going through a very difficult time. I was a 15 year old boy who loved my father, but resented him for what he was doing to tear his marriage and our family apart. Field of Dreams helped me to realize a few things. Among them, I learned that life is too short to not appreciate the good things. Oftentimes we realize a good thing only after it is too late to enjoy it. Field of Dreams is not a movie anout baseball or about fathers and sons. It is about believing in yourself and trusting in yourself. At a very precarious time he film made me comfortable about being true to myself and loving my Dad because of what we had that was good. I have viewed this movie at least twice monthly for the past ten years. I give it as a holiday gift to at least a dozen people every year. I think it is important and worthy of at least one viewing. It will be in my collection until I die. I can only wish that people extract from it half of the soul food that I manage to obtain each time I watch it!
