Summary: Recommended with another recommendation
Review: When I had first seen this film, it knocked my socks off because I love playing chess, and a lot of scenes seemed riveting to me because of my knowledge of the game. I was pleasantly surprised by the glowing reviews by those who are not as familiar with the game.

Which brings me to address those who find the issue of parenting a gifted child equally as intriguing. May I suggest Jodie Foster's "Little Man Tate"? This movie, released two years earlier, covered much of the same territory, and, IMHO, was as well done.

I recently read that one way the two productions are tied is that the same talent agent did the search for each child to play the prodigy, apparently with the same great results.

Again, I would recommend both of these films.

Summary: Can someone say Oscar?
Review: I just wanna say for all the critics who bagged on this movie when it came out I have to laugh at you..This is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen! I haven't been this touched in a very long time since Forrest Gump..If you play chess and haven't seen this one your gonna get moved off the very seat you sit in. I won't go into details anymore about it because I could rave on for hours about it.. Just buy it and thank me later...10 stars without a doubt and should have been nominated for the oscar that year!

Summary: Fine flick with surprise!
Review: When I saw this I thought it was just a fine, well made little movie and was happy as a clam, as they say, to have seen it. Then I see at the end that it's a true story....good thing I didn't know that BEFORE I saw it: I probably wouldn't have seen it! But having found it out at the end was an added surprise. Anyway, I know how to play chess, but the movie isn't really about chess. It has more to do with good old-fashioned storytelling! It would even be helpful NOT to know anything about the game! Nobody will find fault with this flick. I'm glad I discovered it!

Summary: Please release this on DVD!
Review: I'm waiting patiently for this to come out on DVD. It's one of those great movies that someone should have sent to the Academy Awards people. An excellent story, great acting & cast, it even contains a fantastic score. Highly recommended even if you don't like chess!

Summary: Best Chess movie...
Review: But not the best movie every made. Directors make Pandolfini out to be a monster in the first half of the movie, totally out of character with the real person. Chess players will have GREAT FUN picking out the cameos in the movie. The ending saves problems in the rest of the film. A bit sappy, but I like sappy. 8-) Chess players, use this movie to introduce your friends to the game, but be there to tell them that tournaments are no longer played by crazy people in burned out buildings.

Summary: A film for every parent and teacher
Review: Much more a deeply thoughtful and thought-provoking film about relationships between parent and teacher and child/student than a film about a chess prodigy. You don't have to know or care anything about the game of chess to find viewing this film to be a deeply moving experience. Every parent and teacher struggles with how to encourage and teach a child to be his or her best without pushing in a harmful way. Most parents know that competition in life can't be avoided, but that children can be harmed and/or can benefit from their participation in competitive activities run by (for?) adults. A side issue faced in a few families is whether and how a child with world-class skills can still lead a normal life and just be a regular child at times. "Searching for Bobby Fisher" addresses these issues better than any other film I can think of. The acting is outstanding; everyone is very convincing in his and her roles. The editing and cinematography in this film are also especially effective at telling the story. Bravo!

Summary: I thought it is one of the BEST movie's ever!

Summary: Reprise of 3/30/99 review
Review: One thing I forgot to mention in this wonderful family film (other than don't let the words 'family film' put you off seeing this outstanding movie), is the remarkable performance by Max Pomeranc as Josh Waitzkin. While the whole cast is truly wonderful, Max literally IS the movie because of his sensitive portrayal of the child genius. I can think of no child actor who could have brought as much honesty and sensitivity to the screen as did this boy.
